Pencacai UMNO Menghina Sunnah Rasulullah

Pencacai UMNO Menghina Sunnah Rasulullah

Posted: 17 Sep 2012 10:01 AM PDT

The Prince And His Ideas

Posted: 17 Sep 2012 07:32 AM PDT

Many use the term 'Machiavellian' policies etc without really understanding Niccolo Machiavelli because they may not have read his book "The Prince".

If you have not read it, you can access the test HERE. Study notes are available HERE.

According to this article:

The Prince (Italian: Il Principe) is a political treatise by the Italian diplomat, historian and political theorist Niccolò Machiavelli. From correspondence a version appears to have been distributed in 1513, using a Latin title, De Principatibus (About Principalities). However, the printed version was not published until 1532, five years after Machiavelli's death. This was done with the permission of the Medici pope Clement VII, but "long before then, in fact since the first appearance of the Prince in manuscript, controversy had swirled about his writings".

Although it was written as if it were a traditional work in the mirrors for princes style, it is generally agreed that it was especially innovative. This is only partly because it was written in the Vernacular (Italian) rather than Latin, a practice which had become increasingly popular since the publication of Dante's Divine Comedy and other works of Renaissance literature.

The Prince is sometimes claimed to be one of the first works of modern philosophy, especially modern political philosophy, in which the effective truth is taken to be more important than any abstract ideal. It was also in direct conflict with the dominant Catholic and scholastic doctrines of the time concerning how to consider politics and ethics.

Although it is relatively short, the treatise is the most remembered of his works and the one most responsible for bringing the word "Machiavellian" into wide usage as a pejorative term. It also helped make "Old Nick" an English term for the devil, and even contributed to the modern negative connotations of the words "politics" and "politician" in western countries. In terms of subject matter it overlaps with the much longer Discourses on Livy, which was written a few years later. In its use of near contemporary Italians as examples of people who perpetrated criminal deeds for politics, another lesser-known work by Machiavelli which The Prince has been compared to is the Life of Castruccio Castracani.

The descriptions within The Prince has the general theme of accepting the aims of princes; such as glory, and indeed survival, can justify the use of immoral means to achieve those ends.

The following is a list of selected Machiavellian quotations taken from his book "The Prince."

There are three kinds of intelligence: one kind understands things for itself, the other appreciates what others can understand, the third understands neither for itself nor through others. This first kind is excellent, the second good, and the third kind useless.

The first method for estimating the intelligence of a ruler is to look at the men he has around him.

A man who is used to acting in one way never changes; he must come to ruin when the times, in changing, no longer are in harmony with his ways.

A man who wishes to profess at all times will come to ruin among so many who are not good.

A prince is also esteemed when he is a true friend and a true enemy.

A prince must not have any other object nor any other thoughtà but war, its institutions, and its discipline; because that is the only art befitting one who commands.

A prudent man should always follow in the path trodden by great men and imitate those who are most excellent, so that if he does not attain to their greatness, at any rate he will get some tinge of it.

A wise prince then...should never be idle in times of peace but should industriously lay up stores of which to avail himself in times of adversity so that when Fortune abandons him he may be prepared to resist her blows.

And although one should not reason about Moses, as he was a mere executor of things that had been ordered for him by God, nonetheless he should be admired if only for that grace which made him deserving of speaking with God.

And in examining their life and deeds it will be seen that they owed nothing to fortune but the opportunity which gave them matter to be shaped into the form that they thought fit; and without that opportunity their powers would have been wasted, and without their powers the opportunity would have come in vain.

And truly it is a very natural and ordinary thing to desire to acquire, and always, when men do it who can, they will be praised or not blamed; but when they cannot, and wish to do it anyway, here lies the error and the blame.

Any man who tries to be good all the time is bound to come to ruin among the great number who are not good. Hence a prince who wants to keep his authority must learn how not to be good, and use that knowledge, or refrain from using it, as necessity requires.

Everyone sees what you appear to be, few experience what you really are.

For it must be noted, that men must either be caressed or else annihilated; they will revenge themselves for small injuries, but cannot do so for great ones; the injury therefore that we do to a man must be such that we need not fear his vengeance.

For on Cardinal Rohan saying to me that the Italians did not understand war, I replied that the French did not understand politics.

For one change always leaves a dovetail into which another will fit.

Pemimpin BN Songlap RM200,000 Geran Bantuan Setengah Juta

Posted: 17 Sep 2012 08:01 AM PDT

-KD

Remembering the 77th anniversary of Ban Hin Lee Bank

Posted: 17 Sep 2012 04:15 AM PDT

Sometimes, I would remember it; most times I don't. But today was one of the few occasions when I did. I woke up this morning and it clicked in my mind that today's the seventeenth of September. It is a date in my version of history, as far as I am concerned. It mattered to me. It moved me enough to post this message on facebook:
17 September? Is today 17 September? That would mark today as the 77th anniversary of Ban Hin Lee Bank, it being founded on 17 September 1935. Unfortunately, the bank had already ceased to exist by 30 June 2000. All that's left for us are the memories of the past working life and camaraderie among old friends and former colleagues. Such was the friendship cultivated at Ban Hin Lee Bank that similar relationships could never be repeated at new work places. They never reached the same heights after our banking days.
Hours later, it had collected several "likes" and responses from my connected friends from the bank. I'd like to share them here:

  • KS Lim SS, but the memory is precious. Even though it has been more than 12 years since the bank has ceased to exist, we still identify ourselves as BHL bankers. This is something pretty rare. I left the bank 10 years prior to that date, but I still consider myself an ex-BHL bank staff.
  • Lim Soon Huat A large number of esp. Penangites has had their first career with this august institution. Maybe I'm wrong but I think BHLB was just more than an institution to us. In some ways it was like an extended family - the bonding has been unusually strong even til now.

  • KS Lim KS Lim Soon Huat, couldn't agree more. When I joined KL branch in early 78, almost half of the staff were Penangnites. And these are not only Penangnites who were sent to the branch, butPenangnites who have made KL their adopted homes. I can still remember even the customers were ex-Penangnites and Penang Hokkien was widely spoken in the branch. We always feel like being in a home away from home.
  • KS Lim Off course, we had senior staff like Khay Seang, Beng Huat, Benny, Thiam Cheong and a couple more who came to work with us as well.

  • Lim Soon Huat There are very few siimlar institutions nowadays which are people centric. We have lots to be grateful to our predecessors for their contribution in this aspect.
  • Vincent Tang Yes, very fond memories I have but all good things must come to an end at one point. Cherish the memories but life goes on.

Take note of the government of Myanmar's decision to establish a 27- member Commission to probe the sectarian violence and recommend steps to resolve the crisis,

Welcome the government of Myanmar's decision to allow diplomatic missions, independent observers and fact-finding teams including those from the OIC, ASEAN and the Perdana Global Peace Foundation to visit Rakhine state to ascertain the situation affecting the Rohingya,

Urge the government of Myanmar to recognise the multi-ethnic reality of the country and that its failure to resolve the Rohingya problem will undermine its current reform and progress towards national reconciliation, democracy and prosperity,

Call on Aung San Syu Kyi and the National League for Democracy Party as well as other political parties to promote ethnic rights and equality in Myanmar and take an unequivocal and proactive role in ending the plight of the Rohingyas,

Request the governments of Bangladesh and other destination countries to provide temporary protection to the Rohingya and to allow the international community to provide food and other humanitarian assistance to them pending a political solution of the Rohingya problem,

[EDISI KANTOI] NST Siar Gambar Palsu Persidangan Umno-APCO Pekan!

Posted: 17 Sep 2012 06:34 AM PDT

Dengan tajuk utamanya "Najib: United front crucial for Umno's success in polls", ternyata NST terang-terang membohongi pembaca akhbarnya!

-jalanpulang/GB

Burma (military government) plays the race card

Burma plays the race card

Its Buddhist majority might see fit to rally behind Aung San SuuKyi for greater democratic rights while it continues to persecute other groups.

By William McGowan September 16, 2012

Myanmar's pro-democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi has extolled Buddhism for allowing her a sense of inner freedom during her 15 years of house arrest. She's also said that Buddhist precepts can guide her country's democratic transition, encouraging reconciliation with the military instead of anger and revenge.

But the more nationalistic face of this Buddhist tradition, brought into focus by recent violence directed against Rohingya Muslims in the western state of Rakhine, could yet derail democratic reforms in Myanmar (also known as Burma).

In fact, Suu Kyi has a Buddhism problem, specifically the chauvinism and xenophobia of Burma's Theravada Buddhist culture, which encourages a sense of racial and religious superiority among majority ethnic Burmese Buddhists (60% of the population) at the expense of ethnic and religious minorities. The resulting tensions could leave the country politically fragmented and strengthen the military's hand just as it has been forced to loosen its grip.

This is why Derek Mitchell, the first U.S. ambassador to Burma in 22 years, was right in August to call the fate of the ethnic nationalities the country's "defining challenge." It is also why this issue should be on the top of the agenda this week when Suu Kyi comes to Washington to receive the Congressional Gold Medal. So far, Suu Kyi's response to treatment of the stateless Rohingya Muslims in Burma has been disappointing.

The anti-Rohingya violence, which took place in June, led to scores of deaths, the burning of settlements and a refugee exodus of 90,000 people into neighboring Bangladesh. There, more than 200,000 refugees from Burma still languish in makeshift camps from the last anti-Rohingya pogrom 20 years ago. According to the United Nations, the Rohingyas, who number about 800,000 worldwide, are one of the world's most persecuted minorities.

They are subject to forced labor, extortion, police harassment, movement restrictions, land confiscation, a de facto one-child policy and limited access to jobs, education and healthcare. A 1982 Burmese law denies them citizenship, based on the presumption that they are illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, even though many have lived in Burma for generations. There's also their darker skin color, which makes them "ugly as ogres" by comparison to the "fair and soft" complexion of native Burmese, as a Burmese consul general stated in 2009.

Burmese President Thein Sein has said that the solution to the Rohingya problem is to put them into internal U.N.-administered camps, or to expel them. This proposal already has enhanced his popularity as a defender of the Buddhist faith, with monks taking to the streets in support.

But other minorities have been put-upon by Buddhist nationalism too, which views them as threats to "the land, the race and the religion." Many of these groups, such as the Karen, the Shan, the Mon and the Kachin, have been in a state of rebellion off and on against the central government since Burma gained independence in 1948.

Buddhism played a key role in undermining the military's grip on power. Opposition of monks to the regime, which boiled over in 2007′s Saffron Revolution, posed a significant challenge to the military's popular legitimacy by depicting it as an enemy of Buddha sasana, or righteous moral rule. To deflect that challenge, the government has played the race card, largely through propaganda stressing that Buddhism is the religion of "true Burmese" and that the health and purity of a uniquely Burmese form of Buddhism are at risk from "outside" contamination.

Although this strategy wasn't successful enough to fend off assaults on the military's legitimacy, it was effective at feeding Buddhist chauvinism and insecurity. The result has been a rising tide of nationalism in which the Buddhist majority might rally behind Suu Kyi and her monastic allies for greater democratic rights, but still sees other groups in a subordinate and often racist light.

As the violence against the Rohingyas played out, the newly liberated Internet lit up with racist invective. Using a pejorative for the darker-skinned Muslims, one commenter declared, "We should kill all the Kalars in Burma or banish them, otherwise Buddhism will cease to exist." A nationalist group set up a Facebook page entitled "Kalar Beheading Gang," which attracted 600 "likes" by mid-June. Meanwhile, monks in Rakhine state distributed pamphlets urging Buddhists not to associate with Rohingyas.

In Europe in June to receive her belated Nobel Peace Prize as the crisis peaked, Suu Kyi seemed at a loss to respond. Asked whether the Rohingya should be treated as Burmese citizens, she answered, "I do not know," followed by an equivocating statement about citizenship laws and the need for border vigilance. Neither she nor her National League for Democracy party denounced the attacks or the racist vitriol that followed them. NLD spokesman Nyan Win simply said: "The Rohingya are not our citizens."

This response left many Burma-watchers disheartened. But Maung Zarni, a Burmese research fellow at the London School of Economics, explained: "Politically, Aung San Suu Kyi has absolutely nothing to gain from opening her mouth on this. She is no longer a political dissident trying to stick to her principles. She's a politician, and her eyes are fixed on the prize, which is the 2015 majority Buddhist vote."

Suu Kyi has since established minority rights as a priority, citing it in July in her first speech in Parliament, though without mentioning the Rohingya specifically.

A failure to manage ethnic and religious tensions long held in check by military authoritarianism invites dark scenarios. In some assessments, Burma could fragment, a la Yugoslavia. The specter of "disorder," which the military has historically used to justify its heavy-handedness, could lead it to slow the pace of reform or even roll it back. In 1962, minority unrest, significantly provoked by the establishment of Buddhism as the state religion, set the stage for the coup that led to 50 years of military misrule and international isolation.

Suu Kyi wrote in a 1985 academic monograph that in the Burmese "racial psyche," Buddhism "represents the perfected philosophy. It therefore follows that there [is] no need to either develop it further or to consider other philosophies." In her bid to forge a sense of national identity for all Burmese, that cultural obduracy is not working in Suu Kyi's favor.

-SH

penerima geran bantuan Perdana Menteriterpaksa bayar komisyen 40%

Posted: 16 Sep 2012 10:55 PM PDT

 Sidang media sebelum laporan SPRM
Bersama teman - teman selepas laporan SPRM

Satu sampul surat tidak bertanda telah dihantar dengan ditinggalkan di peti surat. Setelah diteliti sampul surat itu mengandungi dokumen sebanyak 25 helai dokumen yang berkaitan dengan Persatuan Bekas Polis Malaysia. Merujuk seperti mana yang telah diumumkan dalam sidang media sebelum laporan SPRM dibuat. Antara dokumen tersebut ialah ;

SAMM bersama YB Ng Sue Lim iring penternak burung walit bertemu menteri pertanian

Posted: 16 Sep 2012 09:19 PM PDT

puak Umno yang tiba - tuba mengamuk meragut banner -banner yang dibawa
penternak burung Walit

Kehadiran kami disambut Noh Omar sendiri. Kami dijemput duduk.

Majlis dimulakan seorang moderator bercakap keliling semua penyokong Umno bersorak, polis kelihatan bertindak profesional menjaga sekitar meja rundingan berlaku.

Namun bila YB Ng Sue Lim bercakap keadaan mula kecoh bukan sekadar penyokong Umno, Noh sendiri mula berdiri dan marah- marah. che'GuBard mula bangun nak bercakap, tolak menolak berlaku.

Homeless family can now rejoice after being offered flat in Rifle Range

As reported in The Star

Homeless family can now rejoice after being offered flat in Rifle Range

AFTER losing a roof over his head due to an interim court order in Penang more than two weeks ago, Tan Kim Swee thought his parents would never get to enjoy the comforts of a home.
The 34-year-old construction worker, who earns only RM900 per month and has to support both his ailing parents, was ordered by the court to move out from his rented home in Perak Lane after being unable to settle his rental for about two years.

After spending three nights by the roadside near his former residence, Tan and his parents can now rejoice as he was offered one of the seven Rifle Range flat units under a refurbishing project, undertaken by the Penang Master Builders & Building Materials Dealers Association.

"When my landlord asked for a court order to ask my parents and me to move out, I was at my wit's end as we did not have anywhere else to stay.

"I could not afford to pay rent, which was RM350 per month, as I had to pay for my parents' medical fees and other expenses such as food," he said.

"Even after I sold off my motorcycle, it was not enough. A friend of mine recommended me to seek assistance from Sungai Pinang assemblyman Koid Teng Guan, who helped me move in into one of the units at Block J of Rifle Range flats," said Kim Swee.

He said his adopted father, Thor Yu Aun, 64, is suffering from a stroke while his mother Tan Saw Lean, 75, has symptoms of old age illnesses.

Association president Lim Kai Seng said the refurbishing project, costing over RM10,000 per unit, was part of the association's corporate social responsibility (CSR) project.

"We hope those who are without homes or are in need of a shelter will be able to benefit from our CSR project," he said before presenting a mock key to Kim Swee in Komtar recently.

State Town and Country Planning, Housing and Arts Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said priority was given to the poor and needy as it was the state government's effort to provide homes to them at a minimal rental cost.

"The state government is repairing all of the units in blocks E and J in Rifle Range so that we can rent them out to the needy.

"This is also our initiative to take care of the poor," said Wong.

The two 16-storey blocks with 170 units were once used as quarters for the military in the 1980s and 1990s. The state is currently subsidising the rental of such units, which normally cost between RM250 and RM300 in the market, by charging only RM90.

Siapa Exco UMNO N9 Yang Lepaskan Tembakan?

Exco Umno-APCO Negeri Sembilan Lepaskan Tembakan!

@anthonyloke Dpt info seorang ahli EXCO NS melepaskan 1 das tembakan dirumahnya. Minta Polis NS siasat segera spt mana kes bodyguard DSAI"

-jalanpulang

Negeri Umno exco in gun shot scandal

SEREMBAN: A Negeri Sembilan state exco member is under police investigation for allegedly firing his pistol at his home in Seremban on Friday night.

It could not be ascertained if anyone was injured as a result of his action but FMT learnt that the Umno politician fired his weapon following a personal problem involving a close relative.

The matter was revealed to the media today (Sunday) by DAP's MP for Rasah Anthony Loke who questioned the delay of police action against the Umno exco man.

"I got to know that the exco member fired a shot at his home. The police took swift action when Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim's bodyguard aimed his gun at individuals who provoked by trying to stop the latter's car in Jasin last week.

"I urge the police to thoroughly investigate if the Negeri Sembilan incident really happened and take immediate action against the state exco," said Loke who is also the DAP national youth chief.

When contacted Seremban district police chief OCPD ACP Saiful Azly Kamarudin said the matter was under investigation.

FMT also learnt that the state exco and another person had lodged separate police reports over the incident.

A Close Shave

Posted: 16 Sep 2012 07:52 PM PDT

I had a near death experience recently - one which has transformed my perspective to life quite drastically. That is why I did not manage to update my blog for the past few days. In fact, I have not been well for some time now.

Since the time I was a little girl, I have had claustrophobia which is the fear of having no escape and being closed in small spaces or rooms. According to Wikipedia, it is typically classified as an anxiety disorder and often results in panic attack, and can be the result of many situations or stimuli, including elevators crowded to capacity, windowless rooms, and even tight-necked clothing. The onset of claustrophobia has been attributed to many factors, including a reduction in the size of the amygdala, classical conditioning, or a genetic predisposition to fear small spaces.

In retrospect,  it all began in the 1960's when I used to play hide and seek with my cousins. I loved to hide in cupboards, under the bed/tables or any dark and crammed places. There were times when I was trapped within because the door was jammed or because I did not want to lose the game and so suffered in silence till I could bear it no more. Even writing about it now is giving me palpitations. I cannot describe the anxiety I feel when in enclosed conditions.

When in secondary school, I was infamous for my fainting spells - most of which was during school assembly, especially when singing the national anthem when we had to stay still or even during sports events. In sixth form, I fainted once. When I was expecting my older son, I fainted during one sports event. Of course, I have always been a 'puteri lilin' for I cannot stand the sun. Prolonged exposure to the sun gives me horrible headaches, fever and many other problems.

I cannot bear to be in an elevator that is jam packed because the dizziness and palpitations give me anxiety attacks, One of the worst claustrophobic experiences I have had would be in a train journey from Hanoi to Hue a few years ago. Then, I was given the centre bunk and I nearly fainted when I saw the bunk. I felt caved in as the space in the cabin was crammed and breathlessness, palpitations were too much for me. It was horribly unbearable and I stood for the whole duration of the journey in the corridor. Hence, when taking any flight, I must have the aisle seat or else all the fear of suffocation etc. will increase in intensity particularly if I have to take the aisle seat.

Unfortunately, I also have agoraphobia which is an anxiety disorder characterized by anxiety in situations where the sufferer perceives the environment to be difficult or embarrassing to escape. These situations include, but are not limited to, wide-open spaces, as well as uncontrollable social situations such as may be met in shopping malls, airports, and on bridges. Agoraphobia is defined within the DSM-IV TR as a subset of panic disorder, involving the fear of incurring a panic attack in those environments. The sufferer may go to great lengths to avoid those situations, in severe cases becoming unable to leave their home or safe haven. This is one of the reasons why I seldom go out.

Recent events such as bombing of public places, earthquakes etc has not made it easier for me to be in crowded places.  As such, I never like to go to shopping malls or large cities.  Hence, you can imagine the fear that filled my heart when I attended public forums or even rallies. Since the last rally I attended at Esplanade in February this year which was really crowded and filled with unpleasant episodes, I resolved never to attend any rally ever again for the rest of my life.

Last Friday, I had the worst experience of my life. After my family attended a birthday dinner of a friend's mom, we made our way to the pasar malam in Jelutong to buy our favourite nyonya kuih from a young couple. As my husband drove around the area for at least three times, I was already beginning to panic. Still, I told him to wait by the roadside while I walked to the stall, I was quite appalled by the thick crowd.

Walking through the thick crowd, I really felt like an earthworm squirming my way through packed earth. On either side were stalls manned by eager hawkers calling out for customers. On such a humid evening, the deadly combo of body odour, sweat and unwashed sweaty, oily hair reeking of the potent concoction of perspiration+hair oil+ stale perfume+ aroma of food was a horrible assault on my poor olfactory receptors!

After buying my kuih, I had to tunnel my way through the crowd and I actually saw the ground moving like waves up and down. There was no way to escape and I had to endure that torturous walk. Finally, there was a gap and I squeezed my way through and walked on the grass. By then, I was very giddy and it was a miracle I drove home safely.

By the time I reached home, my blood pressure had spiked and I was so breathless. It was a full blown panic attack of the highest degree. Writing about it now is really an ordeal and I feel nauseous even at this point.

I had the full works - breathlessness, very high blood pressure reading till the monitor said ERROR which means the reading is so high that it cannot be measured. Severe and debilitating chest pains set in and it was so unbearable that I cried and cried. Even when lying in bed, I felt my shoulders and neck stiffening and then my right arm transformed into a rigor mortis state. Soon, I could not move my right arm or fingers at all. I concentrated and tried to wriggle my fingers but to my horror, I saw the veins on my right hand and lower arm bulging in distended manner and they were like ridges on my arm - green, fat and ugly. That made it worse and I panicked even more thinking I had had a stroke.

My husband called a doctor friend who advised him to rush me to hospital immediately. I had difficulty walking but made it to the emergency ward where I took an ECG test. The nurse was horrified as the blood pressure monitor showed a reading of 167/103 and this was AFTER I had cooled down. It must have been in the region of 200 when I was at home. Thereafter, they had to draw my blood. Er...I have a very low threshold of pain so you can imagine how my bp spiked again when they stuck a needle into my hand and plastered the contraption. My eyes were shut tightly when they drew blood :-(.

Beside me was another emergency case - a sixty year old man who collapsed from a heart attack. While I was hooked onto one machine, I reckon the man was probably on four or more. One was probably a ventilator as it had this airy sound of air being compressed and released, another one had the beeping sound and another made musical sounds somewhat like a video game arcade and there was another making peculiar noises.

There I was. Thinking that I would die.

And there he was, at the threshold of death, body turned blue black. I could see his worried relatives hovering around the door and his wife crying softly by his side pleading to him to wake up and not to leave. It was very depressing and I felt so sorry not just for myself but more for the man in the next bed.

I thought to myself - for a long time, I had feared dying but never ever realized it is NOT that easy to die and it is much easier to live. How lucky I was to be able to breathe and talk albeit a bit coherently and what a close shave I had had.

As the doctor examined me and waited for the results of my tests, I really treasured every second of my life and vowed to take on a positive perspective despite whatever fears I may have.

While writing this post, I missed a call from my aunt in US so I called her back via my mobile and had a twenty minute conversation with her. I am well aware that some of my relatives also have claustrophobia and agoraphobia but she was so encouraging and positive in reminding me that each of us holds the destiny to our our lives - it is up to us to resolve to take control of our lives and will ourselves to overcome weaknesses.

The past few weeks when I had been unwell, I lost so much weight despite the fact that I had been eating well and enjoying loads of chocolates. Now, I have lost 28 pounds. Early this month, I had regained 6 pounds due to the Hari Raya break but with all the physical challenges and the recent frightening episode when I almost came face to face with 'death', I dropped six pounds and am at my thinnest. On a positive side, I can wear many of my old clothes, mini skirts etc but when I look at my gaunt face minus the fats around the cheeks or neck and my thin arms, I am glad to be alive! However, the whole experience has had its toll on my husband who is now sick as well. :-( He saw the doctor yesterday and hopefully by God's grace, we will both be ok.

Health is wealth. I know it is going to be a tough journey through the sunset years but I am going to make everyday count and make sure I stay positively healthy. Writing about the experience has been stressful as I had to relive the sequence of events. I assure you that what I wrote here is exactly the way it happened with no embellishment of any sort. Coming face to face with my claustrophobia and agoraphobia is not easy but is vital in recovery.

Thanks to blog readers, friends and relatives from here and there who phoned, sent me SMS messages, emails or whatsapp messages. They knew for when in hospital I accidentally posted in Facebook a photo I took of myself in the emergency room to see what I looked like in my groggy state.

Take care, dear readers. May God bless and keep you always!

Grand homage to Tua Peh Kong

Photos by GARY CHEN

THE serene atmosphere on the Bao Yu Hill in Air Itam, which houses the Bao Yu Xian Yan Tua Peh Kong Temple was replaced with the clanging sounds of cymbals to mark the deity's birthday celebration.

Temple chairman Ch'ng Poh Teik said for the past 150 years, the Tua Peh Kong deity has been carried by devotees on a sedan chair to make his annual journey down from the hilltop cave temple to the open space behind the Air Itam market.

He said this is done on the first day of the Chinese eighth lunar calendar of every year.

"After the Tua Peh Kong deity is brought down from the temple, we will 'invite' the deity to celebrate the deity's birthday for nine days," he said.

Ch'ng added that among the highlights of the nine-day celebrations are the religious birthday prayers, cultural stage shows and the 'ko tai' stage performances, which are held to entertain the deity.

Yesterday, hundreds of devotees braved the early morning showers to make their journey up the hill.

Among those who was seen slowly making her way up the slippery slope was grandmother Chin Lai Chu, 55.

"I have been coming up every single year for the past 15 years to celebrate the deity's birthday.

"It is not that tiring because I love hiking but we have to move slowly because it is very slippery," she said.

At the end of the nine-day celebration, the devotees would then usher the deity
back to the temple.

On the 12th day of the Chinese eighth lunar calendar, there would be a 150th Bao Yu Xian Yan Tua Peh Kong birthday dinner celebration at the SJK (C) Shang Wu.

The temple was built in 1862 by a Taoist monk 'Miao Lean', who first set foot in Air Itam with the aim of spreading the teachings of Taoism.
