Apology and apologetic

Posted: 11 Oct 2012 10:06 AM PDT

News portal Malaysia Chronicle posted an apology for featuring an article "Lynas, Cancer and You" recently, purportedly written by someone 'outside' the organisation.

The article, done without any research and observation, condemned Lynas plant in Pahang as disastrous and hazardous to those living within its vicinity.
"Malaysia Chronicle accepts that there has been sound scientific basis for the regulatory reviews that have been conducted of the Lynas project by among others, the AELB and the IAEA. We would point that the article "Lynas, Cancer and You" was not written by us but a pick-up story which may not have been based on scientific claims. We apologize to Lynas for any misunderstanding and inconvenience caused."
I guess they are sincere. However, a good news portal (and newspapers and other media alike) should be more selective in establishing the logic of such writings before sending it to print.

In fact, some mainstream newspapers and TV stations had made silly errors in the past...and quite recently!

In another development, a Singaporean executive also apologised for a 'racist' FB posting about the minority Malays in the republic.

However, she is not anti-Malay. Just that she was perturbed at the long-and-time consuming Malay traditional wedding ceremony.
"A labor executive in Singapore who worked for a government-linked organization was fired after posting a racially charged and expletive-filled diatribe on her Facebook account.
Amy Cheong, an assistant director for the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), lost her job Sunday after posting a message on her Facebook account lambasting the Malay minority in Singapore.
Cheong, an ethnic Chinese citizen, criticized the community's divorce rate and the length of Malay wedding celebrations in her rant. Her Facebook account has since been deleted.
"How many f***ing days do malay weddings at void decks [meeting halls in apartment complexes] go on for??," she reportedly wrote according to a screenshot posted on Twitter. "Pay for a real wedding u a***ole, maybe then the divorce rate wont be so high!"
Sorry that she lost he job but sometimes you got to pay a high price for what you did.

In Malaysia, religion, race and color are time-bomb factors. Sensitive postings on FB and Twitter are getting out of control but there's nothing much the authority could do as not to be labelled as anti-freedom.

If we want to sack those involved, the figure could be thousands. Whether its Malaysia Chronicle or Amy, we should watch our tongue... and look before you take that leap!

Ulasan GB

MACC clears "corrupt" Taib Mahmud & Musa Aman

Taib's son rich from gov't deals, but no proof of abuse

While Sarawak Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud's son Mahmud Abu Bekir had richly benefited from the state, provisions in the law are hindering the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) from charging Taib with abuse of power.

NONEAccording to MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Mohd Shukri Abdull, this is because Taib had either declared his interest or was absent from meetings where the decision to award state deals to Bekir (left) were made.

"Regarding his (Taib's) son, and his (former) daughter-in-law's testimony in court. It is true, he received things like timber concessions, which he could sell, amounting to a lot of money.

"But he had applied for the projects and gotten them. His father did not make any decisions, it was approved by exco members (the Sarawak cabinet). This is the weakness in the law," he said when met in Kuala Lumpur today.

Mohd Shukri was responding to a question  on whether testimonies in the ongoing Syariah Court trial between Bekir and ex-wife Shahnaz A Majid could be used as evidence against the chief minister.

"You said his (Taib's) name, I didn't," he said.

NONEMohd Shukri (right) added that based on Section 23 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, a person cannot be charged for abuse of power if there is no evidence that he or she had personally made the decision to award a contract where there is conflict of interest.

"He could either leave a meeting (after declaring the conflict of interest), which will be noted in the meeting's minutes, or his name would not be in the meeting's minutes at all because he was not present (when the decision was made)," he said.
This leaves no documentary evidence to link the chief minister to abuse of power, he said.

Big fish and vested interests

Speaking broadly on cases of the same nature, Mohd Shukri said that in such cases, those making the decisions are subordinates to the persons being investigated and could find it difficult to decide against the latter's interests.

"But unless the person investigated had said something like 'please consider it', and it is recorded in the minutes, there is no link," he said.

He added that subordinates, particularly when it comes to politicians, are also unlikely to provide evidence as there are vested interests.

"If the person had whispered into the ear of his subordinate (to approve the projects), we don't know as no one is going to admit it.

"They have their rice pots to take care of too, and in some cases, they're afraid they may not be renominated (in the next elections)," he said.

NONECorrecting PAS' Kubang Kerian MP Salahuddin Ayub (left), he said it is Section 53 and not Section 50 as mentioned by the former, which also hampers investigations.

Mohd Shukri said that based on Section 53 of the MACC Act, confessions must be independently corroborated, even if both the giver of the bribe and the recipient of the bribe admit to the act.

"There needs to be either documentation, like bank transaction records, or a witness who can attest to it.
"But bribery usually occurs in private, in closed rooms, with no witnesses," he said.

He said that while the MACC managed to bring "many" civil servants to court under Section 23, it is the same section which allows"big fish" to slip the net.

"If there is no improvement to the law, (Section 23) can continue to be used to evade action," he said.
Mohd Shukri said to support confessions, the MACC is following the footsteps of its Hong Kong counterpart to video-record all statements made.

"Three concurrent recordings are made, one for the person giving the statement, one for the court and another for us to keep," he said.

[BERGAMBAR] Salehuddin Bidas Najib: Jumpa Soros Boleh, Jumpa SAR Tak Mahu!

Posted: 11 Oct 2012 09:12 AM PDT

Turut bersama, Exco-exco Kerajaan Negeri Selangor, Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi, Dr Abdul Rani Osman dan Ronnie Liu, Pengerusi Persatuan Gerakan Kebangkitan Pendidik Kebangsaan (Pendidik), Normala Sudirman, Pengerusi Majlis Pemuafakatan Pendidikan Islam Selangor (Mappis), Dr. Zainal Abidin Kidam dan beberapa wakil NGO lain.

my faith and social justice

Posted: 11 Oct 2012 07:00 AM PDT

in line with the year of faith, which begins today (11 oct. 2012), this month's catholic asian news (CANews)  focus on the year of faith.  i was invited by the editor to contribute an article to it related to the heading mentioned here. the article was published in this month's catholic asian news. the following is an unedited version of my article.

"Show us your faith, and we will believe you." The challenge was thrown to a young Frederic Ozanam in 1833. Ozanam was in a fiery debate, speaking in defense of the Church, when this challenge was thrown to him to prove the practical values of his Christian beliefs. Taking up the challenge, Ozanam formed a small group to help the poor and the oppressed – and thus was born the Society of St Vincent de Paul (SSVP).
I am a member of SSVP for near 20 years and I must say I have manifest my faith to others, especially the non Christians. Some of the non Christians that we helped refers to us as "The Church people" or "Jesus' people".
I remember one old Hindu lady said to us during one of our visit, "You all church people very good. You go to church, you also come to help us."
Yes, we should not only 'go to church' every Sunday or daily and feel that, we have fulfill our obligation as Catholics.
A quote from the US Conference of Bishop, 1998 says "Our faith is profoundly social. We cannot be called truly 'Catholic' unless we hear and heed the Church's call to serve those in need and work for justice and peace.  We cannot called ourselves followers of Jesus unless we take up his mission of 'bringing good news to the poor, liberty to captives and sight to the blind'. (Lk 4:18)."
My social work, then was limited to helping the poor through the SSVP in church. Then when the advent of the internet world bloomed in our country in the late 1990s, I became interested in newsgroups that discussed about social and politics issues.  That was the time when my eyes were opened to many injustices, inequality and oppression that happened in our country and elsewhere.
I spent a lot of time debating with people on current issues, especially on social justice.  I also started a blog, where I mostly blog on current issues. It was interesting and enriching receiving feedbacks and involved in comments and discussions.  However, after sometime, my heart tells me that I should do something more than sitting in front of the computer making comments, or as some would label me 'armchair critic'.
Like Frederic Ozanam, who was challenged by his friends, some of my internet friends challenged me to go out and do something instead of  just talking about the issues on the net.
On one hand, I wanted to but on the other hand I was a bit fearful. I ponder to myself what should I do when the words of the prophet Isaiah (Is 61;1-2) came to haunt me – The Spirit of the Lord God is on Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent Me to healthe brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and freedom to the prisoners;  to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor, and the day of our God's vengeance; to comfort all who mourn. Ah! I thought to myself, I should have no fear as the Spirit of the Lord will be upon me.
I get in touch with my friend who is in Suaram Penang (Human Rights NGO) and asked her to inform me if they have any activities. I remember the very first protest I attended was the Anti-ISA candlelight vigil organized by Suaram. Subsequently, I attended almost all the Anti-ISA rallies and was also involved in one where I was one of the organizer.
At a few of the Anti-ISA rally I attended, I was surprised when I saw some priests and seminarians participating in the rallies too. This gives me encouragement and all the more I believe that the Church calls for us to work for social justice.  Working for social justice is putting our faith in action, applying the teachings and example of Jesus to our current situations. This is what some priests had preached to us.
Truly, I was motivated by the presence of priests at rallies and protests. The Anti-ISA rally in PJ in Nov. 2008, where Fr Paulino was arrested, I was present (my two Penang friends were arrested too). I was at the police station all night and I had met Fr Paulino and spoke to him briefly in the police station. The Anti-ISA rally that I was one of the organizer, when our MC was arrested, a few priests and seminarians followed us to the police station and stayed with us for an hour. Even Archbishop Soter Fernandez were with us until midnight, in the police station to lend his support.
The Anti-ISA issue was my starting point in getting involved in social justice. After that, I continued to be involved in other issues throughout the years. Notably, of course was Bersih 2.0 and Bersih 3.0. In Bersih 2.0, I was in KL among the hundred thousands of people. I ran away from the water canon truck  and for the first time, I experienced tear gas.
As I continue with my involvement in rallies, protests, forums, my family and some friends were concerned for me. Some marveled at my bravery, some wonder why I was not fearful and some cautioned me to be careful and said that one day I might get arrested. Even my parish priest, one day said jokingly to my mother "Aunty, one day, you'll see your daughter in prison."
Brave? No, I don't consider myself brave at all. Fearful? Of course once in a while, there was some fear in my when I got involved. However, the desire to see that justice and rights are uphold overcome the fear but most important of all, the feeling of 'the Spirit of the Lord' being with me pushes me to go on without fear.
I know that as a Catholic, my faith does not limit me to church and prayers only but to put the faith in action, especially to do with social justice.   I remember one day reading on the internet, the words of Bishop Thomas Costello, Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Syracuse, New York. When asked what makes us Catholic, he replied, "Simple. Only these three – celebrate the Eucharist, proclaim the Good News of the Gospel and act for justice."
That, essentially, is what our faith as a Catholic calls us to do. These work of faith, as the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 2442) tells us, lies on us, the lay faithful. It is part of our vocation.
I leave you with CCCC #2442 to ponder on.
CCCC  #2442: It is not the role of the Pastors of the Church to intervene directly in the political structuring and organization of social life. This task is part of the vocation of the lay faithful, acting on their own initiative with their fellow citizens. Social action can assume various concrete forms. It should always have the common good in view and be in conformity with the message of the Gospel and the teaching of the Church. It is the role of the laity 'to animate temporal realities with Christian commitment, by which they show that they are witnesses and agents of peace and justice'. (SRS 47 # 6; cf. 42)

[VIDEO] Pemuda Pas Mahu UTHM Siasat Klip Video Gesa Sokong BN

Posted: 11 Oct 2012 07:07 AM PDT

-SH

A Fine Final Lap

Posted: 11 Oct 2012 06:24 AM PDT

My year is going to end with a bang. I am booked for two workshops and a speaking engagement, one for each month of this last quarter. A couple more workshops are still under discussion. These will keep me busy and conclude just in time for me to wrap up what will become a rather fruitful year.

I like to conduct Disability Equality Training (DET) workshops although I dread the preparatory work beforehand. I would usually spend one week or more putting together the different modules depending on the participants' level of understanding of disability matters and the goals the organisers want to achieve.

That is just for a one-day workshop. A two- or three-day workshop will take even more disproportionately longer time to prepare. This is because of the need to ensure that the contents of subsequent modules are built upon the knowledge of previous ones.

I have digressed. What I wanted to blog about is that I am happy at how the year is panning out. It is going to be an exhausting last lap but I relish the opportunity to be able to facilitate to more people a deeper understanding on the causes of disability and how society can make simple changes to enable disabled people.

Why They Survived Twenty-Five Years

Posted: 11 Oct 2012 04:24 AM PDT

Once upon a time a married couple celebrated their 25th marriage anniversary. They had become famous in the city for not having a single conflict in their period of 25 years.

Local newspaper editors had gathered at the occasion to find out the secret of their well known "happy going marriage".

Editor: "Sir. It's amazingly unbelievable. How did you make this possible?"

Husband recalling his old honeymoon days said: "We had been to Shimla for honeymoon after marriage.  Having selected the horse riding finally, we both started the ride on different horses.

My horse was pretty okay but the horse on which my wife was riding seemed to be a crazy one.

On the way ahead, that horse jumped suddenly, making my wife topple over.

Recovering her position from the ground, she patted the horse's back and said "This is your first time".

She again climbed the horse and continued with the ride. After a while, it happened again. This time she again kept calm and said "This is your second time" and continued.

When the horse dropped her third time, she silently took out the revolver from the purse and shot the horse dead !!

I shouted at my wife: "What did you do you psycho. You killed the poor animal. Are you crazy?".

She gave a silent look and said: "This is your first time!!!"."

Husband: "That' s it. We are happily married ever after."

[PANAS] Mahkamah Perintah Ahli Parlimen BN Jalani Hukum Penjara Bermula Hari Ini

Posted: 11 Oct 2012 03:52 AM PDT

Zaki Salleh mewakili pihak responden.

Demonstrasi Air Taman Medan Dusta Semata-mata

Posted: 11 Oct 2012 02:48 AM PDT

Kesemua penghuni flat Taman Medan Cahaya PJ2, Taman Datuk Harun, Petaling Jaya telah menikmati skim air percuma Kerajaan Selangor sejak akhir tahun lepas.

Another round of clinic duty and house visits

Posted: 11 Oct 2012 12:16 AM PDT

I was on clinic duty again yesterday. This time I didn't have to wait before the first case was handed over. There were supposed to be only 2 new cases, both came quite early. In fact the first one was already there by the time I got to the clinic.

When the nurse mentioned the name of the guy for the first case, I thought the name sounded familiar. True enough, I had actually corresponded with the guy before. He had emailed me earlier seeking my advise after he was first diagnosed HIV+. He was then in Singapore, had to do a medical check-up to renew his work permit, and that was when he was found to be +ve. For a while he was lost as to what to do. He was to come back to Ipoh, but what next?

After a few exchanges of emails. he finally made an appointment with the doctor at the Ipoh ID clinic. And coincidentally, his appointment was yesterday, the day when I was on clinic duty. So when I mentioned my name, he recognised me immediately.

With the exception of a cousin who accompanied him to the hospital, none of this guy's other family members know of his condition. What he needs right now is more of moral support, and so I assured him that I'd assign a buddy whom I think should be able to get along well with him.

The next case referred to me was a 50 year old lady, whose husband died a few months ago. She didn't even know that he had HIV, until she got a copy of the death cert which indicated HIV as being the reason of his death. Hmmm… somehow something didn't seem right. HIV is not supposed to be written as cause of death. But of course, the blessing was that because of that blunder (that HIV was written on the death cert), this lady went for tests herself, and she too was diagnosed to be hiv+ as well. In fact, her CD4 is considered quite low.

With her late husband never ever having an EPF and/or Socso contribution, there was nothing she could claim from the two. And she herself had only worked once for just a month or two. So how does she survive? 2 or her 3 children are working. The eldest, a son, 20, works in KL, earning just enough to survive for himself alone. Her second daughter, the one staying with her, is the one working and paying for her needs… including rental and utilities. The youngest, 14, is still in school. When we told her that we do have funds to help out with children's schooling, she asked if we could help get financial assistance for herself. For the moment I can only think of welfare assistance for her.

With only 2 cases referred, and both were early for their appointments, I finished my clinic rather early as well. Later in the afternoon I went for 2 house visits. It has been quite a while since I visited any of my clients at home, and this time I brought along a trainee volunteer as I wanted her to take over these cases. I already have too many cases in my hands and so the plan is to pass the less problematic ones to other volunteers so I can concentrate on the ones really needing more attention.

First up was Fuzi's house. Fuzi did call me earlier to tell me that her hiv+ son, Ijam, had a broken arm from an accident. I couldn't visit earlier as I had to spend more time at home to take care of my own mother, and since I had the time to spare yesterday, I decided to visit them and introduce them to the trainee volunteer. Anyway, the volunteer and this family had already met during our Family Day earlier this year, so it was more of introducing Fuzi to her new buddy. Fuzi is not really the type who'd "cling" on to the same buddy, so I think there shouldn't be any problem with the "handover". Besides, Fuzi can still call me if need be.

Next up, Aini's house. I knew Aini wasn't home, but last Saturday, her eldest daughter, now in form 6, sent me a text message saying she received an offer letter from MOSTI to take up a diploma course, and sought my opinion if she should accept the offer. It was rather difficult for me to advise without even looking at the letter, what more when I asked for details, things didn't seem very clear. For one thing, the letter didn't specify what course was offered to this girl, it just mentioned the list of courses available. I looked up MOSTI's website, nothing was mentioned about any courses being offered, and so I figured I might as well have a look at the letter before I give her any advise.

The letter looked legitimate. With MOSTI's logo and the government's official logo at the letterhead, and logos of MARA, MOHE and Technology Park Malaysia as joint partners of the programme. There were a few things that made me suspicious although I didn't want to advise the girl against accepting the offer unless I could be very sure. I mean, it could be a legitimate offer and this girl could miss a good chance to do something she likes (Diploma in Tourism was mentioned as one of the courses offered). So I told her to just go for the briefing or whatever but enquire first before paying any registration fee. Meanwhile I also took a snapshot of the letter, to enquire anyone in the know. A friend did say she knew people in MOSTI, so I was thinking of seeking her help to find out if the offer was legitimate, or it was just a private college making use of MOSTI's and other agencies' names to trick unsuspecting students & parents to sign up with them.

There were a few things I was rather suspicious about:

1. MOSTI is not known (at least not that I know of) to offer diploma courses. Definitely not Tourism.

2. The offer letter did not specify what course was offered, instead just a list of courses that the students could choose from.

3. The numbers given to be called by those who chose to accept the offer were all mobile numbers, no fixed line.

4. Registration is to be held at a community hall, not at a college or anywhere with a permanent office. And the students are supposed to be paying RM300 registration fee.

So yes, enquiries were made, and I finally got to speak with a MOSTI officer who said that MOSTI never issues such letters, offering students to take up any courses whatsoever with them. She advised that the girl do not accept the offer, and she also asked for the phone numbers stated in the letter, which I gladly gave to her.

And yes, after that call, I immediately advised Aini's daughter NOT to accept the offer. Thank goodness she decided to seek my advise before making any decision. If it was up to her, she was really keen to take up tourism (which she didn't qualify to apply for earlier because she got a D for maths whereas the minimum requirement is a C for maths).

Ini Wajah Muhdalena Tanpa Topeng, Yang Terlibat Dalam Kes Amuk Di Putrajaya

Amuk: Muhdalena hadapi 2 lagi tuduhan, diarah jalani pemeriksaan mental

This morning, I came across her latest article posted in Today AT THIS LINK. True to the title of the post, Welsh maintains a positive outlook to the coalition and chose not to highlight the many issues at stake today. I am posting it just in case some of you might have missed it...

What's keeping Malaysia's Opposition together? Written by Bridget Welsh

What keeps the Malaysian opposition Pakatan Rakyat (People's Alliance) together? The quick answer often given is the common search of political power.

While power frames the relationships between three disparate political parties - Islamist PAS, secular-committed Democratic Action Party and the umbrella reform-oriented PKR of Mr Anwar Ibrahim - it is not the glue of the opposition alliance. Were this the case, PAS would have left the coalition when UMNO floated the offer of joining the government in 2008 and intense jockeying took place within PAS.

The answer lies in the three parties' shared moral compact. Pakatan Rakyat is an alliance of profoundly different backgrounds, with secularists, theocrats, conservatives and progressives working together. In a world wracked with tensions over religion and misunderstandings, Malaysia's opposition stands out in bucking international trends of difference.

Three common principles bind the Opposition together. The first is deep concern with endemic corruption.

Akhirnya, Jimmy Shanley CERAIKAN Isterinya Secara Tebus Talak RM1

Posted: 10 Oct 2012 10:43 PM PDT

-SH

Ahli Parlimen BN & PR Tolak Saman AES

Posted: 10 Oct 2012 08:06 PM PDT

Sedap jugak dengar... ** ^_^ **
