My New Kad OKU (Card for Person with Disabilities)

My New Kad OKU (Card for Person with Disabilities)

My New Kad OKU (Card for Person with Disabilities)

Posted: 14 Oct 2012 09:15 AM PDT

My first Kad Kenal Diri Orang Kurang Upaya (Identity Card for Person with Disabilities) was issued in 1995. It is a laminated piece of paper card with my photograph, personal particulars and signature. The card measures 4.25″ x 3.5″. It is big and could not fit into my wallet. The most memorable part of this card is that it was presented to me by the then Governor of Penang Tun Hamdan Sheikh Tahir in an official ceremony at the Dewan Sri Pinang in 1995.

Kad Orang Kurang Upaya
New and old Card for Person with Disabilities (Kad OKU)

The card has seen better days. The corners of the laminate have started to peel apart due to wear and tear and from being improperly kept due to its size. I had wanted to have it replaced with a newer laminated card that is smaller but have never gotten to doing it. When Wuan was on leave in June, we decided to take a long drive down to the Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat (JKM) in Kajang to apply for the latest version of the card and change my address from Penang to Pandan Perdana.

It was an easy process. I had to fill up a form, submit it with a photocopy of my identity card, had my photograph taken and then told to wait for the letter informing me to collect the card. Some time in August, the letter finally came. We went on another long drive to collect it from Kajang. It is now called Kad OKU or Kad Orang Kurang Upaya (Card for Person with Disabilities). This plastic card certainly appears more durable as compared to the previous laminated ones. The size of this new card is similar to the identity card and driving license and fits easily into my wallet.

Clean Sweep on Bersih: We are too slow!

Posted: 14 Oct 2012 09:29 AM PDT

I must 'congratulate' the Opposition for successfully hammering the government, notably the Home Ministry, by publishing the book 'Clean Sweep' on Bersih.

The 428-page pictorial coffee table book is impressive, with photos of Anwar Ibrahim, Ambiga, Marina, A Samad Said, Lim Kit Siang, Karpal Singh and other supporters of Bersih demonstrators taking to the streets of major cities - from New York to London, Paris to The Prague, Singapore to Tokyo and Sydney to Jakarta.

Not much of the 'police brutality' was shown, except for a few showing policemen dragging away a few protesters and the smoke from tear gas canisters.

It was compiled at random but with neat and perfection. The message was clear - Bersih rules! I believe the RM60 per copy will become a bestseller in a short time.

AND WHAT ARE WE DOING? JUST SIT TIGHT AND LET IT REACH EVERY CORNER OF THE WORLD AND THE NATION?

Sad that my text message to a Yang Berhormat (sorry, can't disclose its content) went unanswered, unlike the previous. Is he not aware of the book?

However, I am glad that people from the Prime Minister's Office are supporting my idea (will reveal it soon).

Of course we cannot ban the book. Nothing's wrong with it but at least we can come up with a similar one to explain what Bersih is all about.

Unless we agree that Bersih is merely 'for a clean election' and not for reasons that each and every one of us already know!

Sometimes we are just tooooooooooooo slow!

Untuk Irfan, Sebab Pulut Santan Binasa...

Irfan: 'Saya amat kecewa'

Tambah Irfan: "Meskipun kita menguasi separuh masa pertama, tetapi momentum separuh akhir kedua menurun, pemain bahagian tengah kurang membantu pemain lain.

" "Disebabkan itu kita banyak melepaskan peluang," katanya.

Katanya, beliau juga sedih sebab apabila dilihat pada kehadiran penonton malam tadi, hampir 30,000 penonton memberikan sokongan.

"Mereka nyata bersemangat, saya betul-betul minta maaf sebab mengecewakan mereka, tapi nak buat macam mana, setakat ini sahaja kami mampu," jelas beliau lagi.

Bagaimanapun sepakannya tersasar.

Pasukan pelawat melakukan serangan balas dan percubaan Mohamed Ghaddar pada minit ke-12 menerusi hantaran cantik Nik Mohd Shahrul gagal dilaksanakan apabila tandukannya berjaya ditepis keluar oleh penjaga gol Selangor, NorAzlan Razali.

Selang seminit kemudian, Ghaddar sekali lagi terlepas peluang apabila tendangannya melambung tinggi.

Sepuluh minit separuh masa kedua bermula, Kelantan terus ghairah mencari jaringan gol apabila tendangan kencang Nurul Azwan Roya hampir membolosi gawang lawan, namun berjaya ditolak keluar oleh Azlan.

Bagaimanapun ia mudah diselamatkan Khairul Fahmi.

Pada minit ke-67, giliran Indra Putra Mahiyudin pula melancarkan serangan.

Tendangannya tersasar melepasi tiang gol.

Keghairahan pelawat mencari jaringan gol akhirnya tertunai apabila tendangan pemain import Kelantan, Ghaddar berjaya menewaskan penjaga gol Selangor, Azlan.

Ulasan GB

Sebab pulut santan binasa, sebab mulut badan binasa...

The Scoundrelous Fiends in Child Abusers!

Posted: 14 Oct 2012 07:27 AM PDT

Last week, the reports about the abuse of boys by former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, a founder of the Second Mile program for at-risk youth. The 30-60 year prison term handed down to him will effectively keep him locked away for the rest of his life. Those who work with child sexual abuse victims have welcomed the news.

Then many were even more appalled when news broke out about Jimmy Savile's alleged sexual abuse. The BBC is currently faving accusations of a cover-up. The revelations have been nightmarish and my heart goes out to the victims and their years of painful earth-shattering silence!

Why do humans abuse children - be it innocent boys, little girls or young teenagers?

Jeff Wiehe of The Journal Gazette reported:

Some are as young as 1 or 2 years old. A few are as old as 15.

But they come through the doors of the Dr. Bill Lewis Center for Children with stories that share common themes.

A 10-year-old girl told about six years of molestations she suffered at the hands of a middle-aged man she knew.

Another girl, 11, talked about the time an 18-year-old man tried to pull down her underwear and have sex with her after they drove a car around a motorcycle track.

One 12-year-old boy was given an air-soft gun and cash to keep quiet about the sexual abuse he endured.

Children with stories like these are coming to the center – a place where potential child abuse victims from the region are interviewed by forensic specialists – more frequently now.

"We've definitely seen an increase from last year," said Bobbi Golani, the center's program director. "We've opened a second interview room in response to an increasing need. It's busy."

The reason for the increase can only be guessed at, according to those involved at the center.

Is it because the Jerry Sandusky scandal at Penn State has made child abuse easier to talk about? Is it because more people know about the center? Is it because there is more awareness of child abuse? Is it because child abuse becomes more prevalent in hard economic times?

Theories abound. MORE HERE.
A few of my friends were sexually abused when they were young.

One of them was abused by his care-giver when he was young - an ordeal that went on for many years and I doubt his parents are aware of it. From pre-teens, he was quite dysfunctional and things came to a head in his fifth form years. He shared it  with a few of us and to our horror, he said that no one knew about it and eventually, he liked what she did to him. :-( :-(

Tragically, he was dysfunctional all the way in all his relationships with his family, friends and colleagues. He was cheated of his money many times by unscrupulous guys. Yes, he turned gay. Despite his talent and giftings, he never quite made it because of low self-esteem and the scars from the past that never healed.

Another one was also abused but by a stranger and also turned gay as a result. His fortunes were much better for he eventually married a very rich foreigner, although much older than him.

One of my girlfriends was molested in the elevator. She never told me. And she does not know I know. I only stumbled upon it when I was covering court cases. To my horror, her name was called but she never turned up for the trial so the case which came up seven years after the incident was dismissed. Things fell into place and I realized then why there was always sadness in her eyes.

I am sure there are more rape/abuse/incest cases than what is reported. It is appalling that any human can resort to such animalistic ways to subjugate their victims  robbing and destroying not only their childhood but their lives. In the mid-1980's, I attended counselling courses for rape and abuse victims in Singapore and my heart broke into a million fragments when victims related their stories explaining how the situation was exacerbated by the way they were questioned, even blamed by authorities.

There are many reasons why child abuse occurs but honestly, I can never understand nor accept any of excuse or reason because it is something which should not have happened in the first place!

Of all the articles on the recent cases as highlighted, I daresay the most passionately written one is by Howard Jacobson in The Independent titled My father knew Jimmy Savile. See the good in him, he told me. That was the mistake we all made.

 Excerpt:

So, is philanthropy the last refuge of the scoundrel?

When you have things to conceal – a criminal past, a ruthlessly accumulated fortune, a predilection for underage girls, or just a hankering to be better thought of than you deserve – what works better than giving to charity? Give munificently and ostentatiously – for there's no advantage in hiding your light under the same bushel you hide your dirty secret – and a knighthood will surely come your way, to say nothing of the devotion of your beneficiaries, and therefrom, if you're smart, ample opportunity to pursue your secret predilections even further. Crime, charity, crime: call it the perpetual motion of the immoralist.

It's not my intention to be cynical. The charitable impulse is honourable and more than ever necessary in these cruel times; we cannot afford it to be discredited by dubious motives – whether of the criminal or simply the inadequate sort. (I'm thinking of Kitty's friend Varenka in Anna Karenina who devotes herself to good works because she can't otherwise find a centre to her life.)

My father knew Jimmy Savile a little and spoke with admiration of the charity work he saw him do at close quarters. "But the man's a creepy nincompoop," I used to say. "He has the dead face of a thug, makes ridiculous noises, and aspires to the condition of a slow-to-develop infant. You'd have had me adopted had I behaved like that when I was three." "As usual you're quick to make judgements about people you don't know," my father replied with justice, for I was at university and dropped judgements the way an autumn tree drops leaves. "You should see him with disabled kids. You should see the pleasure he brings them."
Predatious

My father was a taxi driver in Manchester when he met Jimmy Savile. For some reason Savile liked the company of taxi drivers and often joined them in their hut at Piccadilly Station. I attach no sexual significance to this, not least because I can't, for the life of me, see any. It's hard to imagine how you'd prey on the innocence of a Manchester taxi driver. But you never know. Perhaps he needed their discretion. Or occasionally craved the conversation of grown-ups.

He gave his time freely, anyway, to the annual Manchester taxi drivers' convoy of disabled children to Blackpool, an event which my father helped to organise, chivvying other drivers and spending weeks decorating his own cab with toys and balloons. It doesn't fall to everybody to be good with disabled children on an outing such as this. At the behest of my father, I tried once and failed. But he was excellent at it, naturally kind and jolly, not distressed into uselessness as I had been, and Jimmy Savile, he assured me, was even better. That being the case, one has to take one's hat off to him. Behaving as though you're a child yourself has its uses.

That I know of, my father never had to square Jimmy Savile's charitable work with his predatiousness. Certainly he never said anything to suggest he was aware of it, as it's becoming more evident by the day that many at the BBC were. Mark Thompson has unwisely said he had never heard a word, which confirms one's suspicions that he didn't have a clue about much, including what was going on in the institution he ran. But how other people at the BBC who did have a clue managed to arrange their suspicions into complaisance is a question we are bound to ask.
Blackmail

Ditto tabloid journalists who have been half inclined to use the Savile revelations as a reminder to Leveson of the importance of exposing public figures, but who should be reminded in turn of their failure to expose this public figure when no one was stopping them from doing so. No one except Savile himself, that is. It's said he blackmailed any paper about to unmask him with the threat of putting an end to his giving, but it's difficult to imagine a threat like that shutting any decent journalist up. Indeed, the threat itself would only have made the story juicier. That it might have silenced some of the staff of the homes, hospitals and special schools he supported, and from which he is said to have drawn a plentiful supply of victims, is easier to understand if not to forgive. You need a hard nose to survive as a charity.

My heart goes out to all victims of abuse..even to the comfort women in WWII. I cannot fathom how one can be so heinous to do such despicable acts. Also, there is the silent assumption that women are 'smutty playthings' as highlighted by Janet Street Porter HERE in her article titled  This was never just about Jimmy Savile. Too many men in TV and radio see women as smutty playthings.

The Daily Mail has also revealed the existence of a fake letter that cast doubt on Savile victim's claims... and played key role in BBC decision to ditch its News Night investigation.

Savile was famous for his yodel and his catchphrases included "how's about that, then?", "now then, now then, now then", "goodness gracious", "as it 'appens" and "guys and gals". Perhaps now, those phrases actually shed lots of light on his dark side that SOME knew and did something about it but was never supported by those in power because of self interests.

The Telegraph reported HERE that a senior member of the staff at the BBC confronted Jimmy Savile over rumours of suspected child abuse more than 20 years ago, it has emerged.

What is shocking is that in many cases (not just the ones mentioned here), there are those who walk the corridors of power who protect the perpretators without batting an eyelid!

There is more than meets the eye. Even in the field of entertainment, this is a problem. Just google for 'paedophilia' and the names of famous producers and you will see what I mean.

I believe mankind has regressed. True, all this occurred even in the dark ages, 17th or 18th century. But the difference is this - our generation is supposed to be more enlightened and educated so if that is the case, why do see so many scoundrelous fiends surfacing, one by one?

That is the sad state of affairs in the world today. Hypocrites, criminals, child abusers, paedophiles, con men/women strutting around in sheep's clothing....ever ready to pounce on gullible, ignorant or helpless victims!

Remember - Child abuse is more than bruises and broken bones. While physical abuse might be the most visible, other types of abuse, such as emotional abuse and neglect, also leave deep, lasting scars. The earlier abused children get help, the greater chance they have to heal and break the cycle—rather than perpetuating it. By learning about common signs of abuse and what you can do to intervene, you can make a huge difference in a child's life. (from HERE)

According to UNICEF Malaysia, an average of 7 children in Malaysia suffered abuse everyday in 2009, and these were only the reported cases.

Victims must not keep quiet. Those who suspect such cases must not keep quiet either. More importantly, parents must educate their children so that they know what to do at first instinct! Sometimes the people whom the children trusted are the worst perpetrators, e.g. in boarding house situations. The scars really last through the tunnels of time...deep set wounds that re-surface in adulthood. I have seen it happening in the lives of people I know.

Signs of physical child abuse
  • Have unexplained burns, cuts, bites, bruises, broken bones or black eyes.
  • Seems frightened and reluctant to go home.
  • Fear of a particular person or family member.
  • Seems unusually withdrawn or overly aggressive.
  • Have numerous fractures, welts or bruises in various stages of healing.

Signs of sexual child abuse
  • Sudden refusal in participation of physical activities.
  • Shows unusual sexual knowledge or behaviour.
  • Have difficulty walking or sitting.
  • Irritation of genital or anal areas.
  • Juvenile prostitution, pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections.

Signs of emotional child abuse
  • Apathy, depression and hostility.
  • Shows extreme in behavior such as over demanding or extreme passivity.
  • Have attempted suicide.
  • Have low self-esteem.
  • Recurrent nightmares, disturbed sleep patterns or a sudden fear of the dark.
Signs of child neglect
  • Hunger and inadequate growth from poor nutrition.
  • Consistently dirty, offensive body odour, unkempt.
  • Inappropriate and lack of sufficient clothing.
  • Failure to get needed medical care, illness left untreated.
  • Poor school performance, tardiness or absenteeism. MORE HERE

Be aware and help to raise awareness. Authorities and concerned quarters must do their part to stop these fiends and to provide the support, counselling and rehabilitation so desperately needed by victims. God help us!

Remember - it should not hurt to be a kid or a teenager.

Virtually burnt OIC office’s smoke could signal the whole world about the downtrodden Muslims’ plight in the Anti-Islam Myanmar

Posted: 14 Oct 2012 06:10 AM PDT

We used to see the "Hut" burning..as one of our brothers posted.

Now if OIC office is virtually burnt, that smoke would signal the whole world esp Muslim countries about the downtrodden Muslims' plight in the Anti-Islam Myanmar……

GOOD…this is called "BLESSINGS IN DISGUISE".

Remember, Allah knows the BEST.

Men proposes and Allah disposed.

This is not the end of the world. Sunset of OIC office is the start of night with MOON and STARS and later the dawn of Myanmar Muslims would definitely follow.

IF NO OIC we all need to push for UN Peacekeepers and UN Investigation team in Rakhine, Yangon, Mandalay and NayPyi Daw.

Libyagate: Obama administration entrusted Islamist militia with Benghazi consulate security

(Townhall) Imagine, pre-9/11/12, that you were responsible for arranging the defense of the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Would you have considered American interests and personnel best protected by bringing in a local security outfit called the February 17 Martyrs Brigade?

The question has yet to come up in House hearings, but I think it holds the key to the Obama administration's betrayal of the American people in "Benghazi-gate." To an American with common sense not subverted by advanced degrees, the thought of putting Islamic "martyrs" in charge of American "infidels" in Benghazi -- which, fun fact, literally means "city of holy warriors" -- would trigger the inevitable "heck, no." And that's without even knowing what is significant about Feb. 17.

But I'm talking about Washington, D.C. Here, placing the lives of Americans in the hands of a thug-army linked to multiple atrocities and drawn from jihad-epicentral eastern Libya disturbs no collective brain wave. No matter that Benghazi and nearby Derna sent more men, per capita, to Iraq to kill Americans than anywhere else in the world. As far as the Obama administration is concerned, putting local boys in barracks inside the consulate compound was a great idea. Why not? President Obama's ambassador, the late Christopher Stevens, was, as they say, "reaching out" across the jihad spectrum on official business.

Meanwhile, Ansar al Sharia ("Supporters of Islamic Law"), the al-Qaida-linked militia believed to have led the consulate assault in September, is a spinoff of the February 17 Martyrs Brigade, but that didn't scratch the lacquered political surface, either. And even as reports remind us of ties among February 17 Martyrs Brigade leadership, the Muslim Brotherhood and the web of jihad-poison spun by Qatar's Yusuf al-Qaradawi and Libya's Ali al-Salabi -- the latter having been tapped by the Qatari dictatorship to distribute $2 billion to Libyan "rebels" -- the focal point remains elsewhere. Lagi Lemparan Cat Merah Di Program Pakatan

Posted: 14 Oct 2012 08:00 AM PDT

Kejadian hanya disedari petugas PR kira-kira 11.30 malam selepas mendapati dua beg plastik cat merah dilempar atas jalan raya berhampiran tempat meletak kenderaan.

-SH

Herd Mentality or mob behavior of U Wira Thu led monks and some Myanmars is due to successive military governments’ Islamophobic propaganda

Congratulations U Wira Thu…for proving that U Thein Sein is bluffing the whole world that Rakhine conflict is not Religious nor Racial Conflict.

You R attacking Islam and OIC and Thein Sein gov just keep quiet.

I am not a Rohingya but a Myanmar Muslim.
I understand that most of the people around the world are easily brain washed into hard mentality by the governments and politicians. e.g. U Wira Thu led Rakhine and Bama Monks. And Islamophobia is a trend by most of the Myanmars virtually on line or in the real world scenario. Herd Mentality or mob behavior of U Wira Thu, some monks and most of Myanmars is due to successive military governments' Islamophobic brain wash propaganda.

Herd mentality (Read all in Wikipedia) describes how people are influenced by their peers to adopt certain behaviors, follow trends, and/or purchase items.

Examples of the herd mentality include xxx superstition, religion, etc. Social psychologists study the related topics of group intelligence, crowd wisdom, and decentralized decision making.

The term herd mentality is the word herd, meaning "group of animals," and mentality, implying a certain frame of mind. However the most succinct definition would be: "how large numbers of people act in the same ways at the same times."

Herd behavior is distinguished from herd mentality because it applies to all animals, whereas the term mentality implies a uniquely human phenomenon. Herd mentality implies a fear-based reaction to peer pressure which makes individuals act in order to avoid feeling "left behind" from the group. Herd mentality is also sometimes known as "mob mentality".

Herd mentality and herd behavior have been prevalent descriptors for human behavior since people began to form tribes, migrate in groups, and perform cooperative marketing and agricultural functions.

Herd behavior in human societies has also been studied by Sigmund Freud and Wilfred Trotter, whose book Herd Instincts in Peace and War is a classic in the field of social psychology.

Kes Dana RM40 juta: Najib Sudah Kantoi, Tuduh Pula Pakatan Juga Terima Dana

PM: Dana RM40 juta Sabah hanya derma politik

Beliau berkata bahawa pembangkang didakwa turut menerima derma politik sedemikian.

-FMT

Report lodged over Umno's RM40m

PETALING JAYA: The clearance of Sabah Chief Minister Musa Aman of any wrongdoing last week over money laundering and graft allegations involving RM40 million has continued to bewilder and anger opposition parties.

Among the latest is the youth wing of Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP), whose members claimed that the government explanation that the money did not belong to Musa, but Sabah Umno, smacks of a deliberate cover up.

Lodging a police report over the matter on Friday, they urged the police to further investigate the origin of the RM40 million.

They also questioned the need to smuggle the money out of Hong Kong and businessman Michael Chia's relationship with Umno.

"If there is no connection (between Chia and Umno), why isn't Umno managing the transaction?" asked the report.

Speaking to FMT, SAPP Youth chief Edward Dagul said that the party finds it hard to believe that the Minister in Prime Minister's Department Nazri Aziz has attempted to "swipe away such a serious case with such a simple sentence".

"We are astonished that a federal minister is actually saying that Umno has that amount of money.

And why has it got to go through Hong Kong? If it really is just a simple matter of Umno headquarters giving money to Sabah Umno, then why is it smuggled through Hong Kong, what is there to hide? "The other thing is that the story has been out for four years, and suddenly after four years they changed their minds and changed the story.

Why didn't Musa Aman say this in the first place?" "To us it is a cooked up story. It is an afterthought," said Edward, who also asked whether the contribution was recorded in the Umno financial report if it was really above board.

Umno MP lashes out

Meanwhile, Sabah's Kota Belud MP Abdul Rahman Dahlan strongly defended the government's position, calling for the opposition to stop continuing to spin the issue after the case has been considered settled.

"What is the core business of Umno? It is a contribution from people for political activities.

There is no law against anyone contributing money to political parties as long as they are accounted for.

"If I had RM1 billion and I like you and I gave you RM2 million, so what? As long as a receipt is given," he said.

"We've been very patient in allowing the law to take it's course. We were very quiet when letting the investigation and now when it is proven that he is innocent, not just by the MACC but also the ICAC, don't jump and find another angle," he said.

Abdul Rahman said that if opposition parties wanted to cry foul, they should also reveal their source of funding.

"Opposition, reveal your sources of income, how much have you collected from your donors. I have seen how Anwar (Ibrahim) in Permatang Pauh by-election threw money around. We (BN) were outnumbered, outspent, we were outmaneuvered in terms of logistics, campaign material, financially. Then, for every one flag we had, they had three," he said.

Asked about the claim by opposition parties that the RM40 million amounted to 'foreign money', Abdul Rahman said:" This is ridiculous, they are just having fun accusing Umno of everything.

" Last Thursday, Parliament was told that MACC had cleared Musa of graft and money-laundering allegations after finding that the over S$16 million (RM40 million) was not meant for the chief minister's personal use but for for Sabah Umno liaison body.

"It is not for the private use of the the chief minister," Nazri said in a reply to Batu MP Tian Chua.

The minister had also said the Attorney-General's Chambers had shelved the matter after finding "no element of corruption" in the case.

Caught in 2008

Nazri's reply also stated that the Hong Kong ICAC took no further action in the case after the MACC finding, while the request for cooperation in a criminal matter lodged over the Swiss bank account has been withdrawn for the same reason.

The matter first surfaced in 2008 and was repeatedly raised by whistleblower site Sarawak Report.

Earlier this year, Sarawak Report published documents purportedly from the ICAC that showed that a Swiss bank account in the name of a lawyer in Sabah contained some US$30 million (RM92 million) and was allegedly being held for Musa.

The report claimed that a paper trail showed that millions in euros, US dollars, Hong Kong and Singapore dollars were channelled from several firms to a number of British Virgin Island companies and subsequently to the Swiss account.

The transactions were believed to have been managed by Hong Kong-based timber trader Chia who was later arrested and charged with money laundering after attempting to smuggle S$16 million (RM40 million) back to Malaysia.

(On Aug 14, 2008, the businessman, Michael Chia, was caught red-handed at the Hong Kong International Airport with Singapore currency worth RM40 million in his luggage before be could board a flight to Kuala Lumpur) Investigations by both the ICAC and MACC was initiated after the Chia case but it was reported that AG Abdul Gani Patail had allegedly shelved files on the investigation and refused to prosecute over allegations that the Sabah chief minister had corruptly issued timber licences to his family worth tens of millions of ringgit.

Musa has denied any link to Chia who, according to media reports, had allegedly told the Hong Kong authorities that the money belonged to Musa.

Musa had previously accused Sarawak Report of defaming him, claiming the graft allegations were likely part of a conspiracy by his detractors who wanted to topple Barisan Nasional (BN) in the east Malaysian state.

Sarawak Report has linked the monies to timber kickbacks which it said were bound for Musa's pockets for approving timber licences.

Ulasan GB

On the 50th anniversary today on 14th Oct for saving the world from 3rd World War.

The Cuban missile crisis—known as the October crisis in Cuba and the Caribbean crisis (Russian: Kарибский кризис) in the USSR—was a 13-day confrontation between the Soviet Union and Cuba on one side and the United States on the other; the crisis occurred in October 1962, during the Cold War.

In August 1962, after some unsuccessful operations by the US to overthrow the Cuban regime (Bay of Pigs, Operation Mongoose), the Cuban and Soviet governments secretly began to build bases in Cuba for a number of medium-range and intermediate-range ballistic nuclear missiles (MRBMs and IRBMs) with the ability to strike most of the continental United States. This action followed the 1958 deployment of Thor IRBMs in the UK (Project Emily) and Jupiter IRBMs to Italy and Turkey in 1961 – more than 100 US-built missiles having the capability to strike Moscow with nuclear warheads. On October 14, 1962, a United States Air Force U-2 plane on a photoreconnaissance mission captured photographic proof of Soviet missile bases under construction in Cuba.

Not only does the ensuing crisis rank with the Berlin Blockade, the Suez Crisis and the Yom Kippur War as one of the major confrontations of the Cold War, it is generally regarded as the moment in which the Cold War came closest to turning into a nuclear conflict,[2] or possibly World War III, with an American research center estimating that 100 million Americans and over 100 million Russians would have perished.[3] The crisis served as the first documented instance of the threat of mutual assured destruction (MAD) being discussed as a determining factor in a major international arms agreement.[4][5]

The United States considered attacking Cuba via air and sea, but decided on a military blockade instead, calling it a "quarantine" for legal and other reasons.[6] The US announced that it would not permit offensive weapons to be delivered to Cuba and demanded that the Soviets dismantle the missile bases already under construction or completed in Cuba and remove all offensive weapons. The Kennedy administration held only a slim hope that the Kremlin would agree to their demands, and expected a military confrontation. On the Soviet side, Premier Nikita Khrushchev wrote in a letter to Kennedy that his blockade[6] of "navigation in international waters and air space" constituted "an act of aggression propelling humankind into the abyss of a world nuclear-missile war".

The Soviets publicly balked at the US demands, but in secret back-channel communications initiated a proposal to resolve the crisis. The confrontation ended on October 28, 1962,[7] when President John F. Kennedy and United Nations Secretary-General U Thant reached a public and secret agreement with Khrushchev. Publicly, the Soviets would dismantle their offensive weapons in Cuba and return them to the Soviet Union, subject to United Nations verification, in exchange for a US public declaration and agreement never to invade Cuba. Secretly, the US agreed that it would dismantle all US-built Jupiter IRBMs deployed in Turkey and Italy.

Only two weeks after the agreement, the Soviets had removed the missile systems and their support equipment, loading them onto eight Soviet ships from November 5–9. A month later, on December 5 and 6, the Soviet Il-28 bombers were loaded onto three Soviet ships and shipped back to Russia. The blockade[6] was formally ended at 6:45 pm EDT on November 20, 1962. Eleven months after the agreement, all American weapons were deactivated (by September 1963). An additional outcome of the negotiations was the creation of the Moscow–Washington hotline, a direct communications link between Moscow and Washington, D.C. Read more in Wikipedia

Myanmar’s Self-destructive and Delusional Patriotism

Source FB of Maung Zarni "Myanmar's Self-destructive and Delusional Patriotism"

For the monks and lay public in Burma holding politically manipulated protests against an organization that officially represents 1.6 billion Muslims from 57 countries is not a sign of patriotism, strategic thinking or humanism – which incidentally Buddhist philosophy espouses.

It smacks of ignorance, racism and blind and narrow-minded nationalism.

These same crowds and men in Saffron robes – who knows what percentage of really practising monks or what percentage the military's moles in the Buddhist Order? – are sowing the new seeds of the country.

The Burmese ruling classes who profess to love the country have NOT been able to resolve even the existing problems, most importantly the political and economic systems, religious diversity and ethnic equality since independence in 1947/48.

Now these classes are involved in creating an entirely new set of potent problems. Not even the most virulent anti-Muslim forces in the Western world would not stage such ethno-religiously motivated protests against the world's largest Islamic organization, whatever the latter's flaws.

Anyone who feels optimistic about the country has not really looked the country's ugly realities, the existing and the emerging ones.

We cannot be too sure of the irreversibility of reforms in Burma or whether "Myanmar will be a democracy in a decade". But we can be sure that radical "Islam" will pay unwelcome visits to the country in the foreseeable future. That is, if the current racist trend of anti-Muslim and anti-OIC trend continues, both in the ruling circle, with its certifiable disdain for Muslims of all stripes and colours, and state-mobilized popular Burmese "Buddhist" racism against "Kulars".

Turkey, which has the biggest army in the region, wants other countries to do its dirty job in Syria

Posted: 14 Oct 2012 05:15 AM PDT

Turkish armed forces consist of 657,985 active duty, 378,700 reserve and 152,200 paramilitary personnel, and yet Turkey demands other countries' intervention into Syria.
ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan rebuked the U.N. Security Council for inaction over Syria on Saturday, saying the world body was repeating mistakes that led to massacres in Bosnia in the 1990s.

President Bashar al-Assad's forces used air strikes and artillery to bombard insurgents on several fronts in Syria, as the 19-month-old conflict risks dragging in regional powers.

Turkey is increasingly entangled after intercepting a Syrian airliner carrying what it said were Russian-made munitions for the Syrian army, infuriating Moscow and Damascus. It has led calls for intervention, including no-fly zones enforced by foreign aircraft to stop deadly air raids by Assad's forces.

But there is little chance of U.N. support for robust action. China insists any solution to Syria's crisis must come from within while Russia has said many Syrians still support Assad. Western nations meanwhile are loath to commit to any military action that could touch off a regional sectarian war.

"The U.N. Security Council has not intervened in the human tragedy that has been going on in Syria for 20 months, despite all our efforts," Erdogan told a conference in Istanbul attended by leaders including Arab League Secretary General Nabil Elaraby. "There's an attitude that encourages, gives the green light to Assad to kill tens or hundreds of people every day."

[PUN ADA] Bomba Selamatkan Lelaki ‘Anu’ Bengkak Pakai Gelang

Posted: 14 Oct 2012 01:38 AM PDT

-HM

The Ageing Brain

Posted: 13 Oct 2012 10:34 PM PDT

My oldest aunt is 97 years old but still has such a wonderful memory. She can even recall my naughty antics as a pre-schooler and even what happened during WWII. According to her, the secret to an alert mind is playing mahjong :-) and doing her tai-chi exercises.

Research has shown that learning a new language boosts brain power. That is one of the reasons why I took German classes two years ago. However, it was tough for me as I already studied French years ago and kind of got muddled. My German teacher was amused because there were many instances eg when counting in German or when conversing...I would begin in German and somehow slip into French halfway. :-(

Anyway, eight years ago (Oct 13 2004), BBC reported:

Learning languages 'boosts brain'

Learning a second language "boosts" brain-power, scientists believe.

Researchers from University College London studied the brains of 105 people - 80 of whom were bilingual.

They found learning other languages altered grey matter - the area of the brain which processes information - in the same way exercise builds muscles.

People who learned a second language at a younger age were also more likely to have more advanced grey matter than those who learned later, the team said.

Scientists already know the brain has the ability to change its structure as a result of stimulation - an effect known as plasticity - but this research demonstrates how learning languages develops it.

It means that older learners won't be as fluent as people who learned earlier in life
Andrea Mechelli, of University College London
The team took scans of 25 Britons who did not speak a second language, 25 people who had learned another European language before the age of five and 33 bilinguals who had learned a second language between 10 and 15 years old.

The scans revealed the density of the grey matter in the left inferior parietal cortex of the brain was greater in bilinguals than in those without a second language.

The effect was particularly noticeable in the "early" bilinguals, the findings published in the journal Nature revealed.

The findings were also replicated in a study of 22 native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and 34.

Lead researcher Andrea Mechelli, of the Institute of Neurology at UCL, said the findings explained why younger people found it easier to learn second languages.

Impact

"It means that older learners won't be as fluent as people who learned earlier in life.

"They won't be as good as early bilinguals who learned, for example, before the age of five or before the age of 10."

Another article from The Guardian said:

Being bilingual may delay Alzheimer's and boost brain power

Research suggests that bilingual people can hold Alzheimer's disease at bay for longer, and that bilingual children are better at prioritising tasks and multitasking

Learning a second language and speaking it regularly can improve your cognitive skills and delay the onset of dementia, according to researchers who compared bilingual individuals with people who spoke only one language.

Their study suggests that bilingual speakers hold Alzheimer's disease at bay for an extra four years on average compared with monoglots. School-level language skills that you use on holiday may even improve brain function to some extent.

In addition, bilingual children who use their second language regularly are better at prioritising tasks and multitasking compared with monolingual children, said Ellen Bialystok, a psychologist at York University in Toronto.

"Being bilingual has certain cognitive benefits and boosts the performance of the brain, especially one of the most important areas known as the executive control system," said Bialystok on Friday at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington, DC.

APA SUDAH JADI? Mesin ATM Di Malaysia Paling Banyak Berjaya Dipecahkan Penyamun

Posted: 13 Oct 2012 11:06 PM PDT

– Bernama

The Paper Boy *must read*

Posted: 13 Oct 2012 08:49 PM PDT

Thanks to YK who sent me some about Ennio Marchetto, the Living Paper Cartoon that set me on a hunt for more information about this creative and talented artiste.

According to his official website:

Ennio was born in 1960 in the beautiful city of Venice, next door to the house of Carlo Goldoni. The son of an espresso machine repair engineer, everybody expected Ennio to continue the family tradition – except him.

Inspired by the Disney cartoons he watched in childhood, the modern choreography of Pina Bausch and growing up amidst the Venetian Carnivale, Ennio daydreamed himself into flights of fancy – amusing his family and friends – with visions of Marilyn Monroe dressed in white paper. At the beginning of the 1980s Ennio used to make extravagant costumes and masks for the re-emerging carnivale. Growing from strength to strength, his dream became reality with the creation of his first cabaret show winning him the prestigious Golden Lion Award, at the Venetian Entertainment Festival and The Golden Mosquito award for comedy.

When he met his collaborative partner Sosthen Hennekam, a fashion and costume designer, they developed enough paper characters to create a full one-hour show. Only a year later London based producer Glynis Henderson invited Ennio to perform at The Edinburgh Festival. He quickly became a cult hit and achieved massive critical acclaim. Things started to move very quickly and in 1994, after several UK Tours, West-End runs and International festivals, Ennio was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Entertainment. That same year Granada Television made a one-hour documentary called 'Celebrations, Paper Marilyn' about Ennio's life and career.

A year later, Ennio appeared at the first European MTV Music Awards in Berlin, together with several stars who were in his repertoire at the time such as Prince, George Michael and Bjork. Ennio also performed with The Spice Girls, Brian Adams and other artists for HRH Prince Charles at the Royal Variety Show, broadcast for the BBC. For his off-Broadway run in 1999, Ennio was nominated for a Drama Desk Award. Shows in San Francisco and Los Angeles followed. In L.A. the show won the Garland Award. In the summer of 2001 he performed at Elton John's 'White Tie and Tiara Ball' – an important AIDS benefit held every year at Elton John's private estate in Oxfordshire. Ennio has since continued his charity work having performed at the esteemed Lifeball in Vienna.

Ennio has performed in over 70 countries world wide, everywhere from Singapore to Mexico. His side-splitting performances of our best-loved celebrities and his adaptability to different cultures has brought his show to royal and celebrity attention giving Ennio a huge following and a massive international fanbase.

Ennio continues to tour the world – he's a global phenomenon and a fascinating man with an incredible history.
