Larry Hagman dies

I remember watching the soap Dallas during the late 1970s, envious enough of the rich oil kingpin JR Ewing role played by actor Larry Hagman.

He was a 'darling' then because our kampung just had its electricity supply from Lembaga Letrik Negara (LLN, now TNB). Other classics on RTM were High Chapparal, Peyton Place and The Sullivans.

I am one of Hagman's million fans. Those who watched Dallas will surely miss him. He died yesterday at the age of 81.

He was such a great actor... to me.
Tributes were flooding in from around the world today following the death of Dallas star Larry Hagman.

The actor, who became internationally known as villainous patriarch JR Ewing in the TV soap, died in hospital in Dallas, Texas, his family said.

Hagman's long-time friend Linda Gray, who played his on-screen wife, Sue Ellen Ewing, was reportedly by his bedside when he died.

Hagman, who had suffered from cancer and liver disease, had been filming the next series of 'Dallas' following the show's relaunch earlier this year.

His death will now be written in to the soap's storyline, Channel 5 said.

"Larry was back in his beloved 'Dallas' re-enacting the iconic role he loved most," his family said in a statement carried by the Dallas Morning News...

What If Iran Had Had Nukes? Imagine this past week with a nuclear-armed Iran watching from the wings by Clifford D. May

Posted: 24 Nov 2012 06:30 AM PST

Israel — as its friends and enemies never forget — is a "one-bomb country." One nuclear weapon is all it would take to wipe out a nation whose territory is smaller than Djibouti, with a population not as large as that of Burundi — fewer than 8 million people, 20 percent of them Arabs who are enjoying rights denied to Arabs (not to mention non-Arab minorities) elsewhere in the Middle East.

Israel is surrounded by Muslim-majority states with 60 times its population and 650 times its territory. Most of those states refuse even to recognize Israel. Some go further. Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, threatens genocide: "Israel must be burned to the ground and made to disappear from the face of the Earth."

Hamas's Charter is not more moderate: "Muslims will fight the Jews (and kill them)." Israel is a vital link in what the Charter calls "the chain of Jihad." Hamas cleric Yunis Al-Astal elaborated in a 2008 sermon:
Very soon, Allah willing, Rome will be conquered, just like Constantinople was, as was prophesized by our Prophet Muhammad. Today, Rome is the capital of the Catholics, or the Crusader capital, which has declared its hostility to Islam, and has planted the brothers of apes and pigs in Palestine in order to prevent the reawakening of Islam — this capital of theirs will be an advanced post for the Islamic conquests, which will spread through Europe in its entirety, and then will turn to the two Americas, and even Eastern Europe.
Both Israel's friends and its enemies are keenly aware that this is the backdrop against which Hamas launches its missiles. Many others choose to be oblivious. So you constantly hear journalists suggesting that the missiles that Hamas has been raining down on Israel from Gaza are merely a form of "resistance" to Israeli "occupation" — ignoring the fact that Israelis gave up their claims to Gaza seven years ago, removing every farmer, every soldier, and every grave.

Hamas does not seek a two-state solution or any other compromise. No one who embraces the ideology of jihadism can. Again from the Hamas Charter: "There is no solution for the Palestinian question, except through Jihad. Initiatives, proposals and international conferences are all a waste of time and vain endeavors." Hamas can accept the occasional truce; as I'm writing this, a ceasefire appears to be going into effect. During such breaks, Hamas does all it can to prepare for the next battle.

Hamas commanders understand that when they wage war — and that's what missile attacks are — and when they commit war crimes — and that's what missiles aimed at civilians are — repercussions will follow. Israel takes great pains to spare non-combatants, but Hamas routinely uses Palestinian women and children as human shields. That, too, is a war crime.

Recently, despite Israeli efforts to block deliveries of advanced weaponry (while simultaneously facilitating the flow of humanitarian aid), Hamas received an estimated 100 Iranian-made Fajr-5 missiles — longer-range weapons that can threaten not just Israeli villages near Gaza but more than half Israel's population. Such missiles have been fired at Tel Aviv, while other missiles, M-75s to be precise (made with Iranian assistance), have landed just outside Jerusalem. Muslim clerics who routinely proclaim Jerusalem "Islam's third holiest city" have not expressed outrage.

If Iran's jihadist rulers acquire nuclear weapons, will they use them in support of Hamas? Might they transfer one or two directly to Hamas, or perhaps to Hezbollah, an Iranian proxy which has thousands of missiles in southern Lebanon aimed at Israel? Would Jerusalem, the holiest city for Jews and Christians, be a target? My answer to all these questions: Why not? If Israel adopts a policy of "mutually assured destruction," which was America's policy vis-à-vis the Soviet Union during the Cold War, will that be sufficient to deter Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah? I'll let Iran's former president, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, answer that: "Application of an atomic bomb would not leave anything in Israel. But the same thing would just produce damages in the Muslim world."

At a time when many in the West insist on a false moral equivalence between Hamas's attacks and Israel's defense, President Obama's response to the conflict has been admirably clear-headed. Last Sunday in Bangkok, he said: "There's no country on earth that would tolerate missiles raining down on its citizens from outside its borders. So we are fully supportive of Israel's right to defend itself from missiles landing on people's homes and workplaces and potentially killing civilians. And we will continue to support Israel's right to defend itself. . . . If we're serious about wanting to resolve this situation and create a genuine peace process, it starts with no more missiles being fired into Israel's territory."

Hamas is serious about wanting to resolve this situation — but not through a peace process. It prefers a process that leads to victory, which means Israel's extermination or, failing that, what it calls "martyrdom." Iran's rulers share those aspirations. Both Israel's friends and enemies get that. Many others choose to be oblivious. National Review

Uthaya: Hindraf's motto is rights, not mercy by Commander (Rtd) S THAYAPARAN, formerly of the Royal Malaysian Navy

"If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward." - Martin Luther King Jr.

INTERVIEW The following is the last of a three-part interview with Human Rights Party leader P Uthayakumar. The first and second parts are here and here.

Ownership of land is perhaps the biggest issue when it comes to the marginalised section of the Indian community. Could you describe the inequalities that Hindraf has discovered that continues to be perpetuated when it comes to this issue?

Malaysia is a huge 329,758 square kilometers with tens of thousands of poor Malay, Kadazan, Iban, and Orang Asli villages with customary land as their social safety net.

Even the Chinese poor have 508 Chinese new villages nationwide. However, there are no more of the hundreds of Indian villages and Indian settlements. Their social safety net is non-existent because they have been denied land titles.

Kg Muniandy, Kg Ghandi, Kg Ratnapillai and Kg Ramasamy which are left are being wiped out or have been deemed as squatters and are slated to be systematically demolished in a matter of time. Now is Pakatan Rakyat undoing these Umno injustices? The answer is obviously a big 'no'.

In addition to these villages, the Umno government has granted some 1,121,346 poor Malays and to a far lesser extent the Orang Asli, Kadazan and Iban the 10-acre land ownership schemes in Felda, Felcra, Risda, Fama, Agropolitan, Kesedar, Ketengah, instantly bringing them out of poverty. For show and that too only in the 1950s and early 1960s, some token 0.1 percent or so Indians (and that too for Malaysia to qualify for the World Bank loans) had been granted land and that too only restricted to the Felda scheme.

Even the pre-existing Indian poor plantation workers of the Merdeka era have been segregated and excluded from these land schemes. Today we no longer hear about the then 40 percent Malay and Chinese daily paid rubber tappers.

jerit tamil school parliament protest 290307 ill
However, we still have Indian poor rubber tappers and plantation workers earning as low as RM13 daily. They are excluded from the hundreds of thousands of self-employed entrepreneurial opportunities offered by the tens of billions of ringgit budget allocated to the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry and Rural and Regional Development Ministry.

As displaced plantation workers, most of them end up as casual and unskilled factory workers, general workers, toilet cleaners, garbage collectors, Alam Flora workers, lorry drivers, security guards, office boys, dish washers, etc, earning as low as RM20 per day contract workers, on par if not lower than the foreign workers. It appears that the Indian poor are only wanted for the 3D jobs - dirty, dangerous and difficult jobs - but never the self-employed, small entrepreneurs or petty trading jobs, and provided the opportunities that have been made available to the poor Malays by the Umno government policies and the Chinese with their community support.

After 55 years of independence nearly all the 523 Tamil schools still remain in dilapidated and near cow-shed conditions in steel shipping containers, upstairs in a shop house, in basements, because they are denied government land titles, unlike other Malay schools. Similarly, almost all the thousands of Hindu temples and Hindu crematoriums unlike any other mosque, surau or Muslim cemetery are denied land titles by the Umno and Pakatan state governments. Because most of them are sitting on prime land, Umno, and Pakatan only see the ringgit sign when they see these last vestiges of the vulnerable and easily bullied Indian basic social institutions.

Within months of coming to power in Perak and Selangor, Pakatan granted land titles to 110,000 Malays in Rancangan Kampong Tersusun, 102,000 Chinese new villagers granted land titles (Utusan Malaysia, April 5, 2008), nine Perak Chinese Independent schools granted 2,500 acres of land (New Straits Times, Aug 31, 2008), 10 acres each to Perak Orang Asli, etc. Moreover, even RM1 million and 1,700 acres of land for pig farming in Sepang (New Straits Times, April 11, 2008).

However, almost zero land for the Indian poor. At the first (and last) meeting Hindraf had with the top PAS leadership at the PAS headquarters early this year, the ex-Perak menteri besar Nizar Jamaluddin (right) had no answer to this. Wonder, why?

Ninety percent, or 282 acres out of the 316 acres of land approved for the non-Muslim places of worship in Selangor was granted to the Chinese community when they have not asked for it. Only 6 percent, or 19 acres, were granted for the thousands of Indian poor Hindu temples in Selangor. (New Straits Times, May 31, 2011)

In any event, the rich Chinese business community can afford to buy the same. Going by the needs basis, which Pakatan says it practices, the Hindu temples that have a history of one Hindu temple being demolished in every 10 days in Selangor in 2007 under the Umno regime are obviously more deserving. So where is the much-touted 'Ubah'? The fact remains that there are zero provisions in Pakatan's Buku Jingga to undo these Umno institutional racism and injustices victimising the Indian poor. Why? To continue the racist Umno tradition when they get to Putrajaya?

What do you hope to achieve by standing for election and why take on a Pakatan candidate? Would not a BN candidate be more appropriate as conventional partisan wisdom goes?

Hindraf has named me as the candidate for the Kota Raja parliament and DUN Sri Andalas constituencies for the simple reason that Kota Raja has the highest number of Indian voters in Malaysia. For obvious reasons, this would be our best bet. Why can't Pakatan make way for us here for a one-to-one contest with Umno-BN? Why the greed in denying even in this one seat to Hindraf when there are 222 parliamentary and 576 DUN seats nationwide? Even now, we are prepared not to contest at all if Pakatan delivers at least even one of the Hindraf 18-point demand, for example land titles 'all in one go' for all Tamil schools, Hindu temples and crematoriums and Indian villages in the Pakatan states.

Why not? After all, Pakatan is multi-racial, or so we are told!

If you could debate any Malaysian public official, who would you debate and what would the topic be?

I would like a debate with the prime minister and the shadow prime minister as only they can deliver on the Hindraf 18-point demand. Then let the Indian poor decide on whom to vote. The debate topic proposed would be 'Are the Malaysian Indian poor the most vulnerable victims in the world's most racist country'.

Will you meet PM Najib and if so why?

No, because it has been a long five years and three months since the Hindraf 18-point demand, dated Aug 12, 2012, was put forward to the Umno prime minister.

NONEExcept for some temporary, piecemeal handouts, there has been almost zero delivery. Hindraf has asked for the delivery of at least five of the 18 demands on or before Nov 1, 2013 as a pre-condition so that we can meet the prime minister to discuss the delivery of the remaining Hindraf 18-point demand.

We have waited for 55 long years and have no more patience to start discussions afresh, for paper pushing studies to be done, blueprint, white paper, political games or gimmicks for that matter. Hindraf gets to the point - delivery to the Indian poor. Moreover, we are serious be it Umno or Pakatan. Some 1,016,799 Biro Tatanegara government staff has thus far been trained to implement these racist Umno government policies at all levels.

Hindraf and the Human Rights Party are now two separate entities. What was the reasoning behind the move?

Because Pakatan also refused to deliver on the Hindraf 18-point demand in the Pakatan-ruled states after GE13, Hindraf formed the Human Rights Party as the political wing of Hindraf with the view to stand on its own feet politically. Otherwise, Hindraf is HRP and HRP is Hindraf. We are the same entity.

There have been vitriolic objections to the 'quota' demands of Hindraf/Human Rights Party. What is your rational for these demands?

No, Hindraf has never demanded quotas. As aforementioned, Hindraf has always demanded equal rights, equal opportunities and equal upward mobility opportunities for the Indian poor on a needs basis.

What are your views on government handouts for Tamil schools and Hindu temples at the expense of the marginalised Indian poor?

Giving handouts to Tamil schools and Hindu temples is just wayang kulit 'delivery' to the Indian poor by Umno and Pakatan. It is a very cheap shot.

We are no Tamil Nadu or Bangladesh. Prosperous Malaysia has the world's tallest Twin Tower. Especially in the era when Barack Obama has already become president for a second term in the United States, this is a national if not international shame.

Do you think that affirmative action programmes, which have been disastrous to the Malay community, will cultivate a culture of entitlement in the Indian community?

No, I beg to differ. The Umno affirmative action policies (read: racist policies) being disastrous to the Malay community is a very shrewd Umno political strategy to continue with their racist agenda with impunity. The Umno affirmative action policies have taken almost all the poor Malays out of the clutches of poverty, created tens of thousands of successful Malay entrepreneurs, graduates, professionals, businessmen, banks, GLCs (government-linked companies), millionaires and billionaires within a short span of a mere 20 odd years.

What cultural traits of the Chinese community do you think are worth emulating in the Indian community?

The Chinese work hard. They may work smarter and have the benefit of their Chinese networks, rich clans, business associations and banks. They have been very successful.

NONEHaving had a head start beginning as the earliest business people and suppliers to the British and gradually controlling some 60 percent of the country's economy. The Chinese have emerged a successful self-sustaining business, banking, corporate and development community.

Umno and Pakatan need this Chinese community to prosper the Malays in what we call the bi-racial 1Malay-sia, but of course segregating the Indian poor.

Like the Chinese, the Indians are also hardworking, many even taking up two jobs, working double shifts even up to seven days a week. They have never asked anything free. All they ask for is for an end to all Umno and Pakatan government institutionalised, state-sponsored and private sector racist policies that have reduced the Indian poor to the vicious stereotype of the 'Negros' of Malaysia. Visit for the truth.

Post-2008, how successful do you think Hindraf has been in creating awareness in the plight of a certain section of the marginalised Indian community? As the very public face of Hindraf, do you think that the movement has lost its way?

Almost on a daily basis, we get Hindraf supporters calling and complimenting us on Hindraf having created awareness on the Indian poor rights. Almost on a daily basis, the five Tamil dailies and the other media to a lesser extent carry news reports on some protest or other against the Umno and Pakatan governments. As the de facto leader of Hindraf, my only hope forward is the realisation of Indian majority seats as aforementioned for a voice at the highest political level - the Parliament. Otherwise we will continue being at the mercy of Umno and Pakatan. Incidentally, the Hindraf motto is rights, not mercy.

Writer's epilogue

What troubles me the most is when Pakatan partisans libel Uthayakumar as a turncoat Umno stooge or worse, a racist agent provocateur. Here is a man who is sacrificing everything to confront a system that has divided along racial lines.

The fact that we in Pakatan continue to play our race cards and do so behind a multiracial/cultural veil, points more to our failings than his.

bukit jalil estate workers housing plight 300507 memoriesWhile Pakatan apparatchiks continue to whinge that Uthayakumar is "racist" all the while PKR and PAS is reassuring a divided Malay community that they will benefit the most from this so-called need-based affirmative action programme and the supposedly "multiracial" DAP continue to joust with the MCA over the Chinese vote, Hindraf hopefully will continue pursuing its agenda which is far more inclusive that the crypo racists within Pakatan would have you believe.

Understand now, that I disagree (and I have told Uthayakumar) with many of his ideas but the reality he and Hindraf shine a light on, is far too devastating to ignore merely because one disagrees with some of the polemics of the messenger. Perhaps in another piece, I will elaborate on how Pakatan's "multiculturalism" has become the new fascism propagated by DAP kool-aid drinkers and how this could be the fault line that finally swings the Malay vote back to Umno.

In the end if we (and by we, I mean Pakatan) win this election and the marginalised Indian poor are overlooked for a variety of reasons, those poor unfortunate souls can rest assured, that Uthayakumar, will never forget them, and will never stop fighting for them, no matter who the opponent is. Takut Dengan Pemerhati Bebas, Bukti Pilihanraya Malaysia Tidak Bersih & Tidak Telus!

Posted: 24 Nov 2012 09:31 AM PST

SAT1M - "Sapu Tanah 1 Malaysia" Sebagai Penghargaan Kepada ADUN Sri Serdang

Posted: 24 Nov 2012 05:39 AM PST

Kenyataan Seksis Bukti Adun Umno Berfikiran Kotor Dan Melampau

Posted: 24 Nov 2012 03:05 AM PST

Obama speech gets mixed response from Myanmar’s minorities

Obama speech gets mixed response from Myanmar's minorities By  Bill O'Toole

United States President Barack Obama might have enjoyed a warm response from crowds in Yangon, but outside the former capital, among the country's various, embattled ethnic minority groups, the response was much more mixed.

In a speech at Yangon University on Monday, November 19, President Obama emphasised the importance of national reconciliation, peace, and tolerance in parts of Myanmar where "conflict still lingers".

He said the civil war in Kachin State, which began in June 2011 when a 17-year ceasefire between the government and Kachin Independence Army broke down, was of particular concern.

But while the president stressed the need for "a lasting peace" and for humanitarian groups to be given access to the estimated 80,000 civilians displaced by the conflict, some Kachin leaders say President Obama is not doing enough, either in words or actions.

"He only spoke generally about equal rights," said a senior official from the Kachin Baptist Convention, who asked not to named. "We want him to strongly focus on the issue … if he pressured [President U] Thein Sein, if they pushed him, [then peace] would work."

Even before President Obama arrived in Myanmar, the US-based Kachin Alliance (KA-USA) accused the administration of effectively supporting the Tatmadaw over the people of Kachin State.

In an opinion piece published on Saturday, November 17 on the Kachinland News website, KA-USA spokesperson Nsang Gum San wrote: "This [visit] indicates a lack of leadership, poor intelligence or the abandonment of American ideals, but the strong American foreign policy that leads by example in this world has been absent for the Kachin in recent years."

On the other hand, President Obama's remarks drew effusive praise from Rohingya activists.

Speaking of the rioting and violence in Rakhine State, President Obama said: "For too long, the people of this state, including ethnic Rakhine, have faced crushing poverty and persecution. But there is no excuse for violence against innocent people. And the Rohingya hold themselves – hold within themselves the same dignity as you do, and I do."

In an open letter to the president published on the group's website, Nay San Oo, the co-founder of the Free Rohingya Campaign in Rakhine State, described the speech as "remarkable".

"We are greatly admired by your leadership and your approach to educate Burmese civil, religious, political, military, government and general public about religious freedom, civil liberty, freedom speech and equality among all citizen of Burma," he wrote.

"The every words in your speech today have cured the mind and thought of millions of Burmese infected by General Ne Win Philosophy of Burman and Buddhist as the only superior race and religion."

It was less popular with Rakhine politicians, however, with Rakhine Nationalities Development Party chairman Dr Aye Maung telling Irrawaddy that President Obama was ignorant to use the word "Rohingya".

"I do not like the word 'Rohingya,'" the Amyotha Hluttaw representative told the Chiang Mai-based organisation. "The word 'Rohingya' is newly invented by illegal immigrants. They are trying to be an ethnic group of our country with a grave intention. Obama has to study about them."

But Shan Nationalities League for Democracy chairman U Khun Htun Oo, a prominent Shan politician and former political prisoner, praised President Obama for both the speech and his decision to visit.

"It came at the proper time," he said in a phone interview last week.

Referring to President Obama's promise to assist Myanmar in its democratic development, U Khun Htun Oo said he believes the US will provide support for reforming the 2008 constitution.

"I think he can talk to the federal government, apply pressure on them," he said. "If this country has a genuine constitution, the whole nation will enjoy peace and tranquility."

The international dimension of the visit, particularly in terms of Myanmar's political and economic relations with regional powers, was not lost on some ethnic leaders.

U Saw Hla Ngwe, a general secretary of the Karen National Union, had measured praise for President Obama.

"Generally I liked his speech," he said by phone from Thailand. "I like that he recognised our political transformation.

"But I hope that our country won't become a hostage between powerful countries in the East and West.  Whatever they bring, it should help our people escape from poverty and difficulties."

BN Selangor ‘Menggelupur’ Jawab Isu ‘Sapu Tanah’

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 11:27 PM PST

-Roketkini

Skandal RM40 Juta: UBS Bank Switzerland Siasat Musa Aman

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 09:07 PM PST

"Harta atas nama Taib Mahmud sahaja RM15 bilion.

-KD

Skandal RM40 juta Musa Aman cetus 6 persoalan baru

Just for Laughs

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 07:02 PM PST

Thanks to Freddie who sent me the following joke which I am posting for laughs. Have a great day!

Hillary Clinton goes to her doctor for a check-up, only to find out that she's pregnant. She is furious... Here she is in the middle of dealing with this Syrian mess — now this has happened to her!

She calls home, gets Bill on the phone and immediately starts screaming: "You bastard! How could you have let this happen? With all that's going on right now, you go and get me pregnant! How could you? I can't believe this! I've just found out I'm five weeks pregnant and it's all your fault!..............Well, what have you got to say?"

There is nothing but dead silence on the phone. She screams again, "Did you hear me?"

Finally, she hears Bill's very, very quiet voice, in a barely audible whisper: "Who's Speaking"??? ~~~~~~~~~~~~
A couple was Christmas shopping at the mall on Christmas Eve and the mall was packed. As the wife walked through the mall she was surprised to look up and see her husband was nowhere around. She was quite upset because they had a lot to do. Because she was so worried, she called him on her mobile phone to ask him where he was.

In a calm voice, the husband said, "Honey, you remember the jewelry store we went into about 5 years ago where you fell in love with that diamond necklace that we could not afford and I told you that I would get it for you one day?"

The wife choked up and started to cry and said, "Yes, I remember that jewelry store."

He said, "Well, I'm in the bar right next to it."

A golfer was involved in a terrible car crash and was rushed to the hospital.

Just before he was put under, the surgeon popped in to see him. "I have some good news and some bad news," says the surgeon.

"The bad news is that I have to remove your right arm!"

"Oh God no!" cries the man "My golfing is over! Please Doc, what's the good news?"

"The good news is, I have another one to replace it with, but it's a woman's arm.
I'll need your permission before I go ahead with the transplant."

Go for it doc" says the man. "As long as I can play golf again."

The operation went well and a year later the man was out on the golf course when he bumped into the surgeon.

"Hi, how's the new arm?" asks the surgeon

"Just great," says the businessman. "I'm playing the best golf of my life. My new arm has a much finer touch and my putting has really improved."

"That's great," said the surgeon.

"Not only that," continued the golfer, "my handwriting has improved, I've learned how to sew my own clothes and I've even taken up painting landscapes in watercolors"

"Unbelievable!" said the surgeon, "I'm so glad to hear the transplant was such a great success. Are you having any side effects?"

"Well, just one problem," said the golfer.......

"Every time I get an erection, I also get a headache."

[BONGKAR] Pemimpin Umno Antara Pemilik Banglo Di Templer Park

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 07:02 PM PST

Daily Mirror (UK) silently deletes article blaming Israel for child death

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 03:00 PM PST

I have previously discussed the case of Mahmoud Sadallah, the 4-year old boy whose the world media blamed on Israel - when in fact he was killed by a Hamas rocket.

One of the examples I gave was the Daily Mirror (UK), which showed a photos the grieving Egyptian prime minister Kandil cradling the head of the child, and had written
"Egypt's Prime Minister wept today as he kissed the forehead of a boy killed in an Israeli airstrike on Gaza."

CNN and others made the same accusation, but they sort of
retracted (reluctantly) when confronted with the facts. The Daily Mirror did not, as far as I know.

So I was surprised to find out today that the link to that article is now
broken, and cannot be found using the search engine on the Mirror website.

Instead of admitting the mistake, the Daily Mirror consigned the article to the proverbial "bit-bucket." It simply erased the article and pretended that it never made the mistake to begin with.

Puts your faith back into journalism, doesn't it?

It always amazes me that major, reputable media act with such immaturity when faced with their mistakes. They don't realize simple psychology: properly issuing corrections does not detract from their reputation, it enhances it.

The original CNN video with the same mistake is
still online. Some 1350 people "Liked" it on Facebook. There is no indication that the report is based on a lie on that same page. People can Google it a decade from now and the lies that Sara Sidler spouted will still be there. CNN's retraction/clarification, as it were, is not even placed on the same page as the original video, where people can see the full picture. Instead, it was buried in paragraph 16 of an unrelated article. The impression that one gets isn't that CNN doesn't care about accuracy, its reputation is the driving force behind its correction policy and instead of doing proper fact-checking they instead try to minimize and hide their mistakes.

People understand that the news media can make mistakes.  But when the same media is seen trying to hide or bury those mistakes, they appear small and petty. The obfuscation is in some ways worse than the errors, because it shows that the outlets care more about their reputations than about the accuracy that they pretend is their primary goal.

I don't know which is worse - the Daily Mirror pretending that the mistake never happened, or CNN which buried its clarification but which still features the mistake in a video that people can watch in blissful ignorace on their site.

Either way, though, it explains why people increasingly do not trust the mainstream media and are relying more and more on alternative outlets, like blogs.
