[WASPADA] Layari laman Sosial Lebih 3 Jam Jejas Mental

Posted: 14 Nov 2012 12:33 PM PST

Risiko kemurungan membabitkan kesihatan mental berlaku kerana kurang pergaulan.

Golongan terbabit berdepan masalah menyerap tekanan ketika bekerja akibat kelemahan menguasai keadaan sekeliling, iaitu 'copy skills'.

Pengarah Hospital Sentosa, Dr Lau Kim Kah, berkata bagi mengelak keadaan itu, ibu bapa perlu menggalakkan anak mereka keluar bersosial secara sihat.

Khususnya ketika musim sekolah, supaya kemahiran menguasai tekanan dapat dipelajari.

Timbalan Pengarah Kesihatan Negeri, Dr Chin Zin Hing, berkata pihaknya menghadapi cabaran besar meningkatkan kesedaran masyarakat terhadap tanggapan menyamakan maksud kesihatan mental dan penyakit mental.

"Kesihatan mental adalah membabitkan semua ahli masyarakat berbeza manakala penyakit mental cuma membabitkan individu tertentu saja," katanya. -BH

Isu Kondo Batu Caves: Bukan Terlupa, Tetapi Sengaja Buat-buat Lupa Atau Jahil

Posted: 14 Nov 2012 06:05 AM PST

Najib lupa siapa punya projek kondo Batu Caves

Ethnic cleansing in Burma?

UN ‘failed Rakhine civilians’, says “future internal probe” on Ethnic Cleansing of Rohingyas

Posted: 14 Nov 2012 04:43 AM PST

Reference: Adapted from the UN report 'failed Sri Lanka civilians', to imagine a new report for Rohingya as UN, UNSG, UNSC, UNGA and UN officials NEVER seemed to learn from their past mistakes and FAILED their duties to protect the civilians.

By Lyse Doucet Chief International Correspondent, BBC News

The United Nations failed in its mandate to protect civilians in the last months of Rakhine's bloody Riots, a leaked draft of a highly critical internal UN report says.

"Events in Rakhine mark a grave failure of the UN," it concludes.

The Union government and Rakhine Governments  are accused of war crimes in the brutal conflict which ended in May 2014.

The UN's former humanitarian chief, John Holmes, has criticised the report.

Mr Holmes said the UN faced "some very difficult dilemmas" at the time and could be criticised for the decisions it had taken.

"But the idea that if we behaved differently, the Myanmar government would have behaved differently I think is not one that is easy to reconcile with the reality at the time," he told the BBC's Newshour programme.

The UN does not comment on leaked reports and says it will publish the final version.

The 26-month RIOTS left at least 1,000 people dead and 100,000 homeless, of which 90% were Muslims. There are still no confirmed figures for thousands of civilian deaths in the last months of riots. An earlier UN investigation said it was possible up to 4,000 people had been killed in the final five months alone. Others suggest the number of deaths could be even higher.

Former senior UN official Charles Petrie, who headed the internal review panel, told the BBC the "penultimate" draft the BBC has seen "very much reflects the findings of the panel". He is now in New York to present the report to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

Sources say a brief executive summary, which sets out the panel's conclusions in stark terms, has been removed in a final report which will number about 30 pages, with additional detailed annexes.

UN spokesman Martin Nesirky told the BBC the UN does not comment on leaked reports. He said a final version would be published once the secretary general had received and read it.

Senior UN sources say Ban Ki-moon is determined to act on its wide-ranging recommendations in order to "learn lessons" and respond more effectively to major new crises, now confronting the international community.

Systemic failure'

The UN's investigation into its own conduct during the last months of the conflict says the organisation should in future "be able to meet a much higher standard in fulfilling its protection and humanitarian responsibilities".

The report does highlight the positive role played by some UN staff on the ground and the secretary general, but it points to a "systemic failure".

The panel questions decisions such as the withdrawal of UN staff from the Arakan State in June 2012 after the Myanmar and Rakhine governments warned it could no longer guarantee their safety.

Benjamin Dix, who was part of the UN team that left, says he disagreed with the pullout.

"I believe we should have continue to stay, not evacuate Rakhine, and basically abandon the civilian population with no protection or witness," Mr Dix told the BBC.

"As a humanitarian worker, questions were running through my mind 'what is this all about? Isn't this what we signed up to do?'"

Hundreds of thousand of Rohingya, Kamans and Muslims civilians remained in the Rakhine, exploited by Rakhine Buddhists and  under indiscriminate government fire.

"We begged them, we pleaded with them not to leave the area. They did not listen to us," said a Rohingya school teacher now seeking asylum in Britain, who did not want to be named. "If they had stayed there, and listened to us, many more people would be alive today."

Despite a "catastrophic" situation on the ground, this report bluntly points out that in the capital Naypyidaw and Yangon "many senior UN staff did not perceive the prevention of killing of civilians as their responsibility - and agency and department heads at UNHQ were not instructing them otherwise".

It says there was "a sustained and institutionalised reluctance" among UN personnel in Myanmar "to stand up for the rights of people they were mandated to assist".

'Culture of trade-offs'

Citing detailed records of meetings and reports, the review highlights how the UN did not publish mounting civilian casualty figures even though a detailed annex makes clear there was a "rigorous methodology."

Under intense pressure from the Myanmar government, it also did not make public that "a large majority" of deaths were caused by government shooting. The government repeatedly denied it.

How did the UN failure happen? The report explores at length how senior staff in Naypyidaw and Yangon "had insufficient political expertise and experience in armed conflicts and in human rights… to deal with the challenge that Rakhine presented", and were not given "sufficient policy and political support" from headquarters.

It also points to the Myanmar government's "stratagem of intimidation", including "control of visas to sanction staff critical of the state".

The result was a UN system dominated by "a culture of trade-offs" - UN staff chose not to speak out against the government in an effort to try to improve humanitarian access.

The UN spokesman in Myanmar at the time says the organisation's staff felt bullied by the Myanmar government, and that there was a "genuine fear" for their safety.

The decision to withhold casualty figures was a result of the difficulties of operating in the country, added the spokesman, Gordon Weiss.

"It was an institutional decision not to use those [casualty lists] on the basis that those could not be verified and of course they couldn't be verified because the government of Myanmar wasn't letting us get anywhere near the conflict zone," Mr Weiss told BBC's Newshour programme.

Edward Mortimer, a former senior UN official who now chairs the Rakhine Campaign for Peace and Justice, says UN staff left when the population needed them more than ever.

"I fear this report will show the UN has not lived up to the standards we expect of it and has not behaved as the moral conscience of the world," Mr Mortimer said.

"There was a responsibility to protect in Rakhine but unfortunately it didn't get publicity like in Libya. The whole of Muslim areas was destroyed field by field, street by street, hospital by hospital but we didn't get that kind of reaction ."

The executive summary of the draft highlights how "the UN struggled to exert influence on the government which, with the effective acquiescence of a post 9/11 world order, was determined by the Islamophobia".

UN 'chose silence'

There were no UN peacekeepers in Myanmar but this report says the UN should have told the world what was happening, and done more to try to stop it.

In New York, "engagement with member states regarding Myanmar was heavily influenced by what it perceived member states wanted to hear, rather than by what member states needed to know if they were to respond".

During the last months of Ethnic Cleansing, there was not a single formal meeting of the Security Council or other top UN bodies.

Frances Harrison, author of the book Still Counting the Dead on the last months of the conflict, told the BBC "the only way now for Ban Ki-moon to restore the UN's tattered credibility on Myanmar is to call an independent international investigation into the slaughter of thousands of Rohingya, Kamans and Muslims in 2012″.

"The UN chose to remain silent about potential war crimes," says the former BBC Myanmar correspondent.

A former UN official said the establishment of a panel, headed by Mr Petrie who is known for his outspoken views, is a sign "at least part of the UN is very serious about dealing with its failure in Rakhine, Myanmar".

How I Prepared for the Apocalypse

Posted: 14 Nov 2012 03:36 AM PST

Every night the world ends, and every morning it begins anew. Or so the ancient Maya believed.

On Monday night, Oct. 29, when the sun went down, the world inside my apartment in Manhattan's East Village still consisted of the comforts of electricity and momentary concerns: How bad would Hurricane Sandy be? Had I bought enough food? And why did "Breaking Bad" on Netflix keep pausing to buffer?

Then, without warning, the lights went out. Blackness. I made my way about that night with flashlights and candles and awoke to a new day without power or cellphone reception. I walked to work in the Flatiron District to find out that it too was without power. I called my mom, my first contact with the outside world, who told me the extent of the blackout, and how bad the coastal areas had been hit. Indeed, the world, at least in the tri-state area, would never be quite the same.

Doomsday flight cancelled

Then came the voicemail (which I accessed north of 20th street, where I still got service) telling me my US Airways flight had been cancelled. This struck me as ironic: The flight was to take me to West Virginia to meet and interview people featured on "Doomsday Preppers," and learn how to survive an apocalyptic scenario.

Luckily, I was able to find another journalist with whom to carpool down to West Virginia, passing miles of blacked-out buildings, downed trees and hours-long lines for gas, on our way out of the city.

ASEAN declaration falls short on human rights: UN

Posted: 14 Nov 2012 02:14 AM PST

ASEAN declaration falls short on human rights: UN

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, says drafts of the ASEAN Declaration of Human Rights may not meet international human rights standards.

Ms Pillay says the Declaration should be postponed, because of the inadequate involvement of civil society and other stakeholders in the drafting of the Declaration.

She says the document places restrictions in the name of "regional and national particularities", and creates requirements such as the balancing of rights and duties.

"They have to adhere to the universal standards adopted by all states under the UN charter," Ms Pillay told Radio Australia's Asia Pacific at the close of the Bali Democracy Forum.

"But these lapses in this document are not in line with international standard and as I have stated many times, regional human rights instruments can and should enhance and complement the international human rights system."

Ms Pillay says she has called on the governments of ASEAN to consult broadly with civil society before adopting the current draft of the Declaration.

She says the current draft of the Declaration has not yet been published.

Burma concerns

Ms Pillay says she met with Burma's Deputy Foreign Minister at the Forum to discuss the human rights situation in Rakhine state.

"[I] urged that Myanmar should show more concern for the suffering and loss of life in the communities impacted by the violence there," she said.

"If the communal violence is not resolved it can undermine the reform process in Myanmar.

"One of the underlying causes of the violence since June between communities in Rakhine state is the endemic discrimination against the 800,000 Rohingya."

Ms Pillay says leaders who visit Burma should not just have bilateral discussions but also make "a public statement on where they stand with human rights violations."

Jika Ahmad Maslan Sahkan UMNO Parti Rasuah, T.Adnan Pula Sahkan UMNO Tidak Islam

Posted: 14 Nov 2012 04:05 AM PST

-msomelayu

Funny Management Letters

To: All Employees
From: Director, Administrative Services
Subject: Excessive Absences
Due to the excessive number of absences from the office, the following rules and procedures will be put into effect as of this date:

SICKNESS: No excuse. We will no longer accept your doctor's statement as proof, as we believe that if you are able to go to the doctor YOU are able to come to work.

DEATH: (Other than your own) This is no excuse. There is nothing you can do for them, and we are sure that someone else with lesser position can attend to the arrangements. However, if the funeral can be held in the late afternoon, we will be glad to let you off one hour early, provided that your share of the work is ahead enough to keep the job going in your absence.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE: (Surgery) We are no longer allowing this practice. We wish to discourage any thoughts that you need an operation, as we believe as long as you are an employee here, you will need all of whatever you have and you should not consider having anything removed. We hired you as you are and to have anything removed would certainly make you less than we bargained for.

DEATH: (Your own) This will be accepted as an excuse but we would like a two week notice, as we feel it is your duty to train your successor.

ALSO: Entirely too much time is being spent in the restroom. In the future, we will follow the practice of going in alphabetical order. For instance, those whose names begin with "A" will go from 8 to 8:15, "B" will go from 8:15 to 8:30, and so on. If you are unable to go at your appointed time, it will be necessary to wait until the next day when your turn comes again.

Signed: The Management

Laporan BERNAMA Bakal Cetuskan Kemarahan Indonesia

Posted: 14 Nov 2012 12:04 AM PST

Logikkah hanya 20 peserta penunjuk perasaan?

Laporan BERNAMA seterusnya menyatakan:

Hujjah Pak Pandir Ahmad Maslan: Orang Lain Rasuah Juga...

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 10:04 PM PST

Jangan hanya tuduh Umno libat rasuah'

One Track Mind

I'm posting so much less frequently in this blog these days. The thing is I really don't have all that much time to sit and blog like I used to. The 24 hours in a day these days just doesn't seem to be enough. It can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on circumstances

My day is normally filled from morning to the time I hit the pillows. There are days when I can't even recall half the things I do throughout the day. But in general, more than half my day is taken up with my career and the balance of it is given to my passion for running.

It's a good thing the wife shares the same passion too which makes indulging in my running exploits all the more fun. Almost all the time, besides the usual conversations we have about life, we're mostly talking about some new running shoe, some new route we must try, some new race that we're taking part in or some new apparel that we just bought.

Walking into our room is like walking into a mini sports shop ... hahaha ... the first thing you'll notice would be the large number of running shoes we both have, which is a little sinful really. The wife has a lot more running shoes than heels even. Opening our individual wardrobes would see nothing but running tees and running gears cramped into the already cramped space. One day even the tv rack will probably be full of running stuff!

I actually had to give away almost all my work shirts, save two of them, to accommodate all the running tees that I have. It's a good thing the job that I do allows me to come to work in tee shirt and jeans. I haven't used a pair of shirt and slacks in nearly three years now. I'm comfortable with the way I dress and any new client I meet who takes offense with it can always look for someone else to do their work anyway.

Notice how easily I get side tracked to talk about running ... LOL! Ok, I better stop now before I bore you with more stories and tales about running.

The Infinite Vanilla Soy Latte

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 07:00 PM PST

I heard the infinite vanilla soy latte problem at a Stanford philosophy class. The credit for it goes to Professor Bobonich, but I'm not sure if it's his originally. It was a story to explaining why being immortal is not necessarily all that awesome. I heard it about 8 years ago, so I might be a bit off.

Imagine you love your low-fat double vanilla soy latte. You love it so much that you go to your favorite Coffee Shop (Coupa Cafe in my case) every morning to get your fix. The flavor is awesome. It's not too sweet, and has a good kick to it. You would never consider getting any other drink. Not now, not ever. You will always stick to your low-fat double vanilla soy latte.

Now imagine you've had your low-fat double vanilla soy latte every day for a couple of years, maybe 10 or so. Imagine you continue to have it for the rest of your life. Eventually, you will grow tired of the low-fat double vanilla soy latte. You haven't yet? Don't worry, wait a couple of more lifetimes and the low-fat double vanilla soy latte will get boring (assuming you live forever).

Now, let's go beyond the low-fat double vanilla soy latte. Imagine everything you love follows the same pattern. And now imagine that being immortal is really forever and ever. Eventually you will get tired of everything you love. Forever (Infinity) is such a long time, that you will eventually run out of stuff you love. Even if you mix it up, you will get tired of every possible combination (I know that number if big, and the universe will eventually end - but this is a philosophy problem, math and physics are not allowed).

In short, immortality is overrated. Limits help us cherish experiences and choose them wisely. Death helps us appreciate life. Go ahead and have a vanilla soy latte.
