The Rise Of The Supercrips

The Rise Of The Supercrips

The Rise Of The Supercrips

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 08:20 AM PST

"Supercrips" are people with impairments who overcome great obstacles to achieve "normality" in their lives, or even more. She is that paralysed woman who went through intense rehabilitation with a never-say-die attitude and is walking again today. And he is the man with no limbs who go about life "just like everyone else."

The recent London 2012 Paralympics has pushed these supercrips to the forefront. People are paying more attention to these elite athletes who can outrun most non-disabled people. Their visibility in mainstream society is made more prominent by the mass and social medias that recycled images of them in their eye-catching carbon fibre prostheses.

The term "supercrip" itself is condescending. The word "cripple" is considered not politically correct when used in reference to disabled persons. We have evolved where language is concerned but this particular word lingers as supercrips continue to amaze society while creating a sense of confusion within the disability circle.

They are the epitome of what other disabled people should strive for, rising from the ashes to become one with society again. Their accomplishments are often used as examples to inspire non-disabled people and other disabled people as well.

Don't we just love the story of the armless artist who paints with his foot? Or the wheelchair user who goes everywhere and anywhere and even up stairs by himself? They don't need reasonable accommodation. They don't complain. They just suck it up and move on. If they can, why can't other disabled people?

They make "ordinary" disabled people like me sound whiney and demanding for not putting in that extra effort but expecting society to solve the problems. Don't get me wrong. I have nothing against them. They worked hard to get there they are. They live the life they want to. That is their prerogative. I have no argument with that.

What I oppose to is how they are being used as a yardstick on other disabled people. Not every wheelchair user can get up a kerb without assistance. Not every single-leg amputee can become a world class athlete. Not every disabled person who go through rehabilitation can regain full functionality of their body.

A few years ago, I was invited to speak at a seminar organised by a municipal council on the environmental barriers faced by disabled people. Imagine my shock and horror when one of the speakers, after concluding his session on removing barriers, played a video of a disabled person going about his life effortlessly in spite of the barriers in and outside his house.

That video alone cancelled out all our arguments calling for a barrier free environment. Needless to say, the participants were more impressed with that video than the presentations of subsequent speakers. What made it more unfortunate was that the speaker is a wheelchair user and veteran activist on disability issues.

Injudicious use of such examples is damaging to the dignity of disabled persons as individuals and dilutes the advocacy of the disability movement. Disabled people who don't achieve that certain level of independence will feel that they are not working hard enough. Society, on the other hand, will not see the urgency to make the built environment accessible since disabled people are the cause of their own problems.

The crux is that we should all accept the diversity of the humankind. People should be given a choice of who or what they want to be. There are super-achievers and there are people who just want to be ordinary. Not every non-disabled person can climb Mount Everest or run a marathon. We respect that. Likewise, not every disabled person has the capacity to become a super-achiever and may need support in their activities of daily living. We have to respect this also.

Supercrips are the exception, not the norm. Notwithstanding society's fascination with them as the posterboy for disabled people, they are not the true face of disability, and not every disabled person wants to be a supercrip. That is the reality.

Around the world, millions of disabled people are still fighting against barriers, discrimination and oppression every day of their lives. Their stories of courage are not any less interesting. They are fighting for the right to live ordinary lives without having to accomplish extraordinary feats. That is one cause truly worth fighting for.

Carr to Anwar: "Sorry... we won't help you!"

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 07:34 AM PST

Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr said during an interview with The World Today that Australia will not interfere with the election system in Malaysia, and that Anwar Ibrahim's request for Canberra to 'help him' had to be turned down.

A smart minister, and a wise Australia!

Excerpts of the interview:
"Well the Malaysian elections are a matter for the Malaysian people. It's very hard for Australia to do anything about how they're run, as hard as it would be for Malaysia or another government to have a say in how Australian elections are run. We're not the election authority for Malaysia...

"...of course we support free and fair elections in any country. I spoke to Anwar Ibrahim in a private conversation during my recent visit to Malaysia. I heard him express concerns and in the letter he underlines them by talking about, by making accusations of fraudulent and fraudulent registration processes and raising concerns that the elections can reflect the popular will...

"We can't comment on that. An opposition leader is entitled to say that to us. But we discussed the elections with him, I'm aware of his concerns...

"Australia doesn't run elections for other countries. We send observers when other countries ask for them. We receive, we receive submissions from opposition figures in other jurisdictions. We have in this case and we take what is said seriously. Our position is, we want free and fair elections in any country...

"We've got friendly relations with Malaysia and we haven't a capacity to do anything about the internal affairs of Malaysia any more than we have with any other country..."
So, whose help will Pakatan Rakyat has to sought after this? The US? United Nations? Singapore... or Israel?

Not sure if Anwar feels dejected or frustrated with Carr's reaction but Malaysia too, on record, has never interfered with election in other countries unless we are asked to send observers.

The Election Commission is and has done its best to clean up the electoral system but PR seems to not recognising it.

I guess they are only satisfied that the polls were free of fraud in Kelantan, Selangor, Penang and Kedah!

Damn, I'm Hot!

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 06:47 AM PST

The weather is back to its normal blistering self again after the past month of continuous evening rains. And when I say blistering, I really mean blistering. Just walking outside at noon can fry your brains in a few minutes, that is if one actually has brains to fry ... hahaha! Don't mind me, it's the heat talking.

It's close to 10.30pm and it's still hot, stuffy and humid in my mini office at home as I look into this Web To Print Solution that I'm working on. The fan just doesn't seem to be able to keep up with trying to cool me down and I can't wait to head up to the room and switch on the AC!

I know of one little furry critter who also can't wait to head upstairs to bask right under the air conditioning unit. Pebbles, my little pampered dog simply idolizes the air conditioning in the room. The moment she gets into the room, she'll look at the air conditioning wall unit, then either at me or the wife and then back to the unit as if to say,

'hey you humans, switch on the darn thing already!'

Once we switch it on, she'll jump on the bed and plonk her furry little self right at the foot of the bed under the air-conditioning and snooze off to sleep. In fact on a good day, she'll even be snoring! Yes, that little thing actually snores. The first time the wife and me heard her snore, we thought it was the neighbours ... hahaha!

That dog has come along way since the first time she moved in with us. Back then, she was a cautious and wary little dog, not anymore. These days, she actually rules the house and we're just her human slaves. But she's a lovable albeit pampered little thing and is actually part of the family.

happily enjoying her favourite snack ...
She follows the wife around everywhere like her shadow in the day time and then follows me around like a shadow when I get home from work. In the day she belongs to the wife and at night she belongs to me. At least she's fair in that sense.

Ok, now if you'll excuse me, I think it's time to head upstairs and worship the thing that blows cold air cos it's so darned hot downstairs!

Ratusan Mangsa AES Mahu Cabar Kerajaan Di Mahkamah

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 07:24 AM PST

-KD

AES: Kaunter Kase diserbu orang ramai

Hypocrite ASSK as a Global Advocate for Zero Discrimination?

Hypocrite ASSK as a Global Advocate for Zero Discrimination?

In this new role, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will call on her fellow citizens and people around the world to eliminate stigma and discrimination (OF COURSE EXCEPT ROHINGYAS, BENGALI AND MYANMAR MUSLIMS)

She said: "It is a great honour to be chosen as a champion for people who live on the fringes of society and struggle every day to maintain their dignity and basic human rights. I would like to be the voice of the voiceless."

(No need to be the champion of the Rohingyas and Myanmar Muslims because they have voices, they are not living on the fringes of society and are not struggling every day to maintain their dignity and basic human rights.)

Mr Sidibé is IGNORANT that ALL the MUSLIMS OF MYANMAR are angry with her BIGOT stand and ULTRA-NATIONALISM when FALSELY generalized his wrong claim, "From small villages to big cities, from Africa to Asia, people are talking about Daw Aung San Suu Kyi," said Mr Sidibé. "She is inspirational. We are honoured to have her as our UNAIDS Global Advocate for Zero Discrimination. I hope her example will inspire community leaders everywhere to speak out against stigma and discrimination."

She was inspirational BUT NOT ANYMORE for the Muslims of Myanmar!

But you are right that we are talking about Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's kiss with Obama, her stupidity of not knowing the history of Rohingya and the cause of conflict even after 5 months of Ethnic Cleansing and Genocide.

At last her bigotry and ultra-nationalism forced her to wrongly accuse and request Bangladesh government to accept their citizens back, which was rebutted using the facts and figures.

President Obama praised ASSK as Human Rights 'icon' when she is not. She had admitted that people just think that she was a Human Rights icon but she is just a politician and not a "Moral Leader". At first I thought that she is a coward politician scared of losing Buddhist votes but now her action and words proved that she is a racist ultra-Nationalist.

After all DASSK is not fit to be the leader of Myanmar as even after 5 months of deadly conflict in Rakhine and numerous anti-Islam activities around Myanmar, she failed to understand the root cause and give the correct decision.

Although Myanmar have not yet possessed the computer-controlled road mobile nuclear ICBMs (Intercontinental ballistic missiles) carrying MIRVs( multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles ),with multiple nuclear warheads and Anti-ballistic missile systems where leaders need to decide immediately, we have some missiles, rockets and sometimes at the global forum and in front of hostile journalists, leaders need to decide what to say or give the answer immediately.

Tuesday, 20 November 2012 14:29

GENEVA/ YANGON, 20 November 2012—The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has appointed Nobel peace prize winner and Member of Parliament Daw Aung San Suu Kyi as a Global Advocate for Zero Discrimination. In this new role, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will call on her fellow citizens and people around the world to eliminate stigma and discrimination.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi accepted the invitation during a recent meeting with UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé at her residence in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar's capital city. She said: "It is a great honour to be chosen as a champion for people who live on the fringes of society and struggle every day to maintain their dignity and basic human rights. I would like to be the voice of the voiceless."

A strong supporter of the AIDS movement, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has publically engaged with people living with HIV as part of her efforts to counter stigma and discrimination. Earlier this year at a major international AIDS conference in Washington DC, USA, she delivered a message via video link, supporting people living with HIV.

"From small villages to big cities, from Africa to Asia, people are talking about Daw Aung San Suu Kyi," said Mr Sidibé. "She is inspirational. We are honoured to have her as our UNAIDS Global Advocate for Zero Discrimination. I hope her example will inspire community leaders everywhere to speak out against stigma and discrimination."

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is concerned that stigma and discrimination create an environment of fear that prevents people from accessing life-saving HIV services. "In Myanmar we are currently treating more than 40 000 people living with HIV. It is important that everyone who suspects they may be at risk seeks an HIV test and knows their HIV status early, so they can prevent new infections and can access life-saving treatment when needed."

The U.N. Tilt to Terrorists - As the attacks out of Gaza continued, Israel pleaded. The U.N. ignored it by Claudia Rosett

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 05:10 AM PST

Nowhere in the charter of the United Nations is there any mandate for the U.N. to stack the deck in favor of terrorists. Yet that is exactly the effect of the current U.N. furor over conflict between Israel and the terrorists who control Gaza.

When terrorists in Hamas-run Gaza busied themselves in recent years launching well over 2,000 rocket and mortar attacks on Israel, including hundreds of attacks in recent months, the U.N. shrugged it off as business as usual. That's not to say that the U.N. ignored the attacks entirely. As the bombardments went on, and on, a few U.N. officials did occasionally call for them to stop. But these statements were invariably coupled with calls for Israel to practice "restraint," or, as Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon put it last week, "maximum restraint." Under the circumstances, this amounts to a demand that Israel refrain from defending itself.

That might make sense were the U.N. itself devoted to protecting Israel by genuinely rolling up terrorists in Gaza. But the U.N. offers no such service. On the contrary, lacking even an official definition of terrorism, the U.N. works alongside the Palestinian terrorist groups that infest Gaza, especially Hamas, which controls the enclave and is dedicated in its charter to Israel's destruction. The U.N. has made an entire sub-industry out of subsidizing Gaza, serving as a conduit for Western tax dollars to bankroll a wide array of social services. That helps free up Gaza's terrorist overlords, backed by Iran, to focus their energies on acquiring and using munitions to attack Israel. In recent days, these attacks have included the launching of Iranian Fajr-5 rockets, with a range that extends as far as Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

The pattern has been that Hamas and its brethren terrorist groups in Gaza pay no heed to the U.N.'s feeble calls to desist. The job of preventing the attacks on Israel falls squarely on the Israelis. In the U.N.'s morally inverted cosmos, this sets the stage for savaging Israel, as soon as Israel acts to defend itself. Courtesy of the U.N., chalk up a gain for the terrorists.

So, when Israel finally struck back on November 14 by killing Hamas military commander Ahmed al-Jabari and targeting terrorist nests and rocket-launching sites in Gaza, the U.N. swung immediately into overdrive. In short order, Secretary-General Ban phoned Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu to express "concern" about "the deteriorating situation." The U.N. Security Council held a crash meeting that same evening, in closed session, to discuss "the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question." The U.N.'s Palestinian-refugee agency, UNRWA (the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East), headquartered in Gaza, promptly began issuing situation reports, noting in passing that the rocket attacks out of Gaza should stop, while deploring in detail Israel's actions to stop them. From Geneva, the U.N.'s high commissioner for human rights, Navi Pillay, pronounced herself "appalled," and her spokesperson declared she was "following the unfolding situation in Gaza and southern Israel with considerable alarm."

With terrorists in Gaza continuing the rocket attacks, and Israel continuing to strike back, Ban decided to ramp up U.N. efforts at intervention, releasing a statement that "I am heading to the region to appeal personally for ending the violence and contribute to ongoing efforts to that end." By Monday, Ban had landed in Cairo, for the beginning of an emergency swing through the region. For the sake of clarity, as U.N. declarations of dismay now flood the news, let's replay this tape. Terrorist attacks on Israel are of no urgent concern to the U.N. But when Israel tries to defend itself by striking the terrorists, U.N. officials at the highest levels start scrambling to put a stop to what they call a deteriorating situation.

Where were all these U.N. officials while Israel was living through the bombardments that finally provoked its current response, Operation Pillar of Defense?

Arab Apartheid

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 05:02 AM PST

by Khaled Abu Toameh December 23, 2011
In recent months, Egyptian authorities have finally began granting Egyptian citizenship to children born to Egyptian mothers and Palestinian fathers. So far, according to Palestinian sources, more than 500 children have been issued Egyptian passports that enable them legally to live and work in Egypt without having to worry about being detained or deported. The Palestinian population in Egypt is estimated at approximately 100,000.

Egypt is only one of several Arab countries that have always subjected Palestinians to apartheid systems and discriminatory laws. With the exception of Jordan, the Arab countries have refused to grant their citizenship to Palestinians. Arab governments claimed that this measure was aimed at "protecting the Palestinian identity" of the Palestinians so that one day they would be able to return to their original homes inside Israel. In most Arab countries, Palestinians are banned from purchasing houses or lands. They are also denied many jobs in the private and public sectors.

This has been happening at a time when Arab citizens of Israel are free to purchase houses in predominantly Jewish neighborhoods of Jerusalem and in Tel Aviv, Haifa and Upper Nazareth. It is easier for an Arab to buy an apartment in the Jerusalem neighborhoods of French Hill, Pisgat Ze'ev and Armon Hanatziv than in Kuwait, Doha, Beirut or Bahrain. It is no secret that most, if not all, Arab governments would love to see the Palestinians living in their countries leave, and the sooner the better.

The Egyptians, who have long been claiming to defend Palestinians and their cause, were the first to get rid of refugee camps. For years, many Lebanese have been dying to get rid of the 450,000 Palestinian refugees living in their country. Similarly, the Jordanians are not going to shed a tear if the millions of Palestinians living in the kingdom wake up one morning and leave. After the establishment of Israel in 1948, several thousand Palestinians fled to Egypt. But King Farouq was not happy with the presence of Palestinians in his country and the three refugee camps that were established in Egypt for Palestinians were dismantled.

The Egyptians expelled many Palestinians to the Gaza Strip, which was still under Egyptian sovereignty. But those who were allowed to stay in Egypt were required to have an Egyptian "guarantor." Former Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser further eased restrictions on the Palestinians, allowing them to study in public schools and universities. However, the new policy did not change the Nationality Law denying Egyptian citizenship to children of mixed Palestinian-Egyptian marriages.

Now the new government in Egypt has amended the Nationality Law so that children of Egyptian mothers and Palestinian fathers will be able to get Egyptian citizenship. This step should be followed by other measures to fully integrate Palestinian refugees in Egyptian and other Arab societies. There is no reason why Palestinians living and working in the Arab world should be denied basic rights, such as owning a house or sending their children to public schools. Gatestone Institute

Arab Apartheid Against Palestinians

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 04:55 AM PST

by Khaled Abu Toameh June 27, 2012
The plight of the Palestinian refugees in Lebanon and other Arab countries has received little attention from the mainstream media in the West. Lebanon's apartheid laws deny Palestinians access to the majority of white collar positions in areas such as banking, medicine, management, law and education. Though born and raised in the country, they are denied political, economic and social rights.
The Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon are considered the worst in the region in terms of poverty, health, education and living conditions, according to a report published this week by the American Near East Refugee Aid [ANERA], one of the largest American not-for-profit organizations working in the Middle East. This does not mean, of course, that Palestinians living in refugee camps in Jordan and Syria or other Arab countries are happy. But when it comes to Lebanon, the living conditions of the Palestinians are appalling. The ANERA report coincided with news about mounting tensions between Palestinian residents of refugee camps in Lebanon and the Lebanese army.

The tensions reached their peak last week when Lebanese soldiers shot and killed a young Palestinian man in Nahr El Bared refugee camp. Later Lebanese soldiers prevented residents from going to the cemetery to attend the funeral. In 2007, the Lebanese army destroyed most of the camp's houses during fighting with militiamen belonging to Palestinian armed groups and radical Islamic groups. Two-thirds of the camp's 36,000 residents fled the fighting and found shelter in surrounding fields and valleys. Many set up new homes in the nearby Baddawi refugee camp.

Since 2007, the Lebanese army has imposed a strict siege on the camp: residents are allowed to enter and leave only after obtaining permission from Lebanese security authorities. According to the Palestinian residents, they have since been living in a ghetto. The Lebanese authorities have also banned the residents from rebuilding the houses that were destroyed or damaged in 2007. Palestinians are convinced that Lebanon has been trying to get rid of them for many years. Lebanon's apartheid laws deny Palestinians access to the majority of white collar positions in areas such as banking, medicine, management, law and education.

Like many Arab countries, Lebanon has always been treating Palestinians as third-class citizens. Nearly half a million Palestinians live in Lebanon's 12 camps. Though born and raised in the country, they are denied political, economic and social rights. Palestinians cannot attend Lebanese public schools or own property. They do not have access to national health services or the social security system. Checkpoints restricting access to most of the camps, according to the ANERA report, thwart trade and commerce with neighboring counties.

"The refugees live in overcrowded camps and have to deal with discrimination, isolation and social exclusion," the report states. "The refugees often refer to themselves as 'forgotten people' and feel they are living in a hostile environment where their basic human rights are not represented or protected." The plight of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon and other Arab countries has received little attention in the mainstream media in the West. Although many international aid organizations have been working to assist the Palestinians in the Arab world, Western journalists often turn a blind eye to the misery of these refugees.

The unconscionable condition of the Palestinians in the Arab world will end the day the Arab governments and Palestinian leaders stop lying to them and confront them with reality, namely that they need to get along with their lives and secure a better future for their children. Arab and Palestinian leaders, meanwhile, continue to deceive these people by promising them that if they wait a little longer they will one day "return to the homeland." Gatestone Institute

Ethnic Cleansing of Christians in the Sinai

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 04:45 AM PST

by Khaled Abu Toameh October 1, 2012

Where is the Catholic Herald when you need it most?
The ethnic cleansing of Christians in the Sinai is being ignored not only by the Egyptian authorities, but also by the mainstream media and human rights groups in the West.
In events being ignored not only by the Egyptian authorities, but also by the mainstream media and human rights organizations in the West, Muslim terrorists have in recent weeks attacked Christian families and forced them out of their homes and businesses in the Sinai town of Rafah. The terrorists have threatened to pursue their jihad against Christians until all of them leave the Sinai. According to reports from the Sinai, all the Christians who used to live in Rafah have already fled their homes after being targeted by Muslim terrorists.

Christians said that before the Egyptian "revolution," they enjoyed good relations with their Muslim neighbors and felt safer. But under Muslim Brotherhood President Mohamed Morsi, the Christians in the Sinai were being left alone to confront Muslim gangs by themselves. Egyptian security forces finally began operating against the terrorists only after 16 border guards were killed several weeks ago, apparently by Muslim jihadis in Sinai. But these forces have not been able to protect the Christian families in Sinai, whose lives been turned into hell ever since the 'Arab Spring' arrived in Egypt.

The Egyptian newspaper Al-Yom Al-Sabe (The Seventh Day) revealed that the Christian families were forced to leave Rafah after Muslim terrorists torched the local church. It wrote that the terrorists sprayed graffiti on the walls of the destroyed church calling on Christians to leave Rafah immediately. The attack on the church was the latest in a series of assaults against Christian-owned homes and businesses. Ehab Lewis, one of the Christians who fled Rafah, said that not a single Christian has remained in the town. Lewis, a former school teacher, said: "I was in Rafah with my family and we left out of fear for our lives. They threatened to torch my house. They attacked my neighbor's shop and destroyed everything inside. He too was forced to run away."

Lewis said that all the Christians in Rafah had received death threats before fleeing. "We were afraid to send our children to school," he recounted. He and other Christians accused the Egyptian authorities of turning a blind eye to their plight. Instead of confronting the Muslim terrorists, the Egyptian authorities advised the Christian families to move to the town of Al-Arish in Sinai. "This is not a solution," said Father Kuzman, a local leader of the Christian community. "Why are we being asked to leave our holy land? The solution is for the authorities to impose law and order and protect their citizens. The government should not leave the border open to armed groups."

Father Michael George said that the ethnic cleansing of Christians Sinai was taking place as the Egyptian authorities did nothing. Christian families living in Sinai say they miss the good old days before the "Arab Spring," when they were able to lead lives that were relatively normal. Gatestone Institute

Skandal RM40 Juta: Ketua Pendakwa Hong Kong Sedia Buka Semula Kes

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 06:01 AM PST

Hong Kong willing to re-open RM40m case

PETALING JAYA: Hong Kong's chief public prosecutor today expressed his willingness to re-open the case involving the controversial RM40 million that the Malaysian government claims was a "political donation" to Sabah Umno.

Kevin Zervos, Hong Kong's Director of Public Prosecutions, told FMT that his office would require fresh evidence to revisit the case.

He added that his office and the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) would welcome information from anyone.

"In relation to this case, it was more of a jurisdictional matter," he said. "Material that was obtained from Malaysia was that it was political donations. If anything comes up now to show that this wasn't the case, the matter would definitely be looked into."

Any additional information or evidence should be brought to the ICAC's attention, he added.

Referring to the earlier investigation, he said the money "was claimed to be political donations. We didn't have additional evidence that was forthcoming that would enable us to deal with it."

He declined to comment when asked whether he meant that the Malaysian side was not cooperative in the investigations.

Earlier, in an email to FMT, Zervos confirmed that funds in bank accounts in the name of a Malaysian national were suspected to have been held on behalf of a Malaysian government official.

He said Hong Kong authorities withheld the funds towards the end of 2008 while the ICAC and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) conducted a joint investigation.

The investigations looked into suspected breaches of Hong Kong's Prevention of Bribery Ordinance.

"Later in the investigation, information was supplied from Malaysia that the monies under restraint were political donations," Zervos said. "As no further information or evidence was forthcoming with respect to the nature of the monies, there was insufficient evidence at that stage to take the case further.

"Accordingly, the restraint of the monies was lifted towards the end of 2011."

Asked if he would consider the case closed, Zervos said the question was for the ICAC to answer.

He declined to comment when asked if he thought the investigation was adequate, or if there was anything to substantiate the claim that the funds were political donations.

On whether his office had the authority to call for further evidence, Zervos explained that in Hong Kong the prosecutors would guide enforcement authorities but would not take charge of investigations.

However, he said he was open to being questioned further, adding: "I firmly believe in being accountable. That's a policy we have in Hong Kong.

When we make a decision about a matter, we explain it."

Rafizi's Hong Kong visit

Asked for his thoughts about PKR strategy director Rafizi Ramli's plan to travel to Hong Kong tomorrow, Zervos said: "I've made it very clear that if there is any further information or evidence that would assist us, of course the authorities here would receive and evaluate it and deal with it accordingly."

Rafizi said today that he would meet with the ICAC Operations Review Committee as well as Hong Kong politicians. He will be travelling with PKR MPs William Leong (Selayang) and Hee Loy Sian (Petaling Jaya Selatan) and state assemblyman Chang Li Kang (Teja).

The purpose of the trip is to find out whether the Malaysian government stonewalled the ICAC's investigation of timber tycoon Michael Chia, who was carrying the RM40 million, and to seek a re-opening of the 2008 case.

In 2008, news reports said Chia, a Sabah businessman, was arrested at Hong Kong airport on suspicion of trying to smuggle out Singapore currency worth RM40 million. He reportedly told ICAC that the money was meant for Sabah Chief Minister Musa Aman.

In October this year, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nazri Abdul Aziz told Parliament that the money was political funding for Sabah Umno. He announced that both Hong Kong and Malaysian corruption authorities had closed the case.

Nazri disputed news reports about the case, saying Chia was never arrested by the ICAC. He also said the RM40 million seized from him was wired into an account and was not in the businessman's possession.

Previously, it was also alleged that ICAC's investigation had been dropped after three years because of a lack of cooperation by the Malaysian government.

It was also reported that leaked MACC files revealed that Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail had shelved files on the investigations and refused to prosecute Musa

PKR mahu kumpul bukti baru

Why Palestinians Want Israeli Citizenship

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 03:38 AM PST

by Khaled Abu Toameh October 23, 2012

There is no denying that by applying for Israeli citizenship, in defiance of PLO and Hamas warnings, they are actually making clear that they would rather live under Israel than any Arab rule.
The Palestinian Authority says it is worried because of the rise in the number of Palestinians from Jerusalem who are seeking Israeli citizenship. Hatem Abdel Kader, who is in charge of the "Jerusalem Portfolio" in the ruling Fatah faction in the West Bank, revealed that more than 10,000 Palestinians from Jerusalem have been granted Israeli citizenship. Abdel Kader attributed the growing phenomenon to the failure of the Palestinian Authority and the Arab and Islamic countries to help the Palestinian residents of Jerusalem. In other words, he is admitting that Israel is doing more for these Palestinians than the Palestinian leadership and the entire Arab and Islamic countries.

According to figures released by the Israeli Ministry of Interior, 3,374 Palestinians obtained Israeli citizenship in the past decade. According to ministry officials, in the past two years, the number of applicants for Israeli citizenship has intensified. Palestinians living in Jerusalem enjoy the status of permanent residents of Israel. This means that they hold Israeli ID cards but do not have Israeli passports. As permanent residents, they are entitled to all the rights of an Israeli citizen, with the exception of voting in general elections. Israeli law, however, allows any resident to apply for citizenship.

Yet, in the first two decades since Israel annexed east Jerusalem after 1967, few Palestinians applied for citizenship. At that time, it was considered an act of treason to apply for Israeli citizenship; the PLO openly threatened Palestinians who obtained it. But the trend changed after the signing of the Oslo Accords in 1993 and, a year later, the establishment of the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Suddenly, the number of applicants increased dramatically and Palestinians were no longer afraid or ashamed to stand outside the offices of the Interior Ministry in Jerusalem to apply for Israeli citizenship.

The main reason the Palestinians rushed to apply for citizenship was their fear that Israel would also cede control over east Jerusalem to the Palestinian Authority. Their biggest fear was they would lose all the privileges they enjoy as residents living under Israeli sovereignty, including free health care and education, and freedom of movement and work. In addition, the Palestinian residents of Jerusalem realized that despite all the difficulties they face in Israel, their living conditions were still far much better than those living under the jurisdiction of the Palestinian Authority.

Lack of democracy and massive financial corruption under the Palestinian Authority also drove many Palestinian Jerusalemites to apply for Israeli citizenship as a way of ensuring that they would always remain under Israeli sovereignty. As one Palestinian explained, "I prefer the hell of the Jews to the paradise of Hamas or Yasser Arafat." Another reason Palestinians are rushing to apply for Israeli citizenship is their fear that the Israeli authorities may revoke their Israeli-issued ID cards. According to the ministry regulations, Palestinian residents of the city who move to live outside the country automatically lose their status as permanent residents. In the past decade, many Palestinian residents who moved to the West bank or left Israel lost their Israeli-issued ID cards.

Many of those who have applied for Israeli citizenship are Christians from Jerusalem who are also afraid of ending up under the jurisdiction of the Palestinian Authority or Hamas. Ironically, obtaining Israeli citizenship has become a way for Palestinians to ensure their social, economic, health and education rights in the country. There is no denying that applying for Israeli citizenship, in defiance of PLO and Hamas warnings, is also a political statement on the part of the applicants. They are actually making clear that they would prefer to live under Israel than any Arab rule. Gatestone Institute

Egypt Continues Fight at United Nations for Myanmar Muslims Rights

Egypt Continues Fight at United Nations for Myanmar Muslims Rights

Egypt's UN delegation continues to coordinate action to help persecuted Myanmar Muslims and defend their most basic right to a safe decent life, as extremist Buddhists kill and maim hundreds of them every day.

The permanent delegation representing Egypt at the United Nations in Geneva attended a meeting of the ambassadors of the Islamic bloc and discussed how it should respond to the continued human rights abuses targeting Myanmar Muslims.

At the end of the meeting, it was agreed that the bloc should continue to implement the proposals to form a small working group, at professional expert level, to closely monitor the human rights situation in general and the rights of Muslims in particular, in Myanmar.
It was also agreed that the bloc should coordinate efforts between delegates of Muslim countries in Geneva and the Islamic Group in New York, with regard to the wording of the draft resolution on Myanmar in the United Nations' General Assembly, so the resolution would be phrased in strong terms that reflect the dreadful atrocities and gross violations Rohingya Muslims are subjected to, and would represent an important reference framework to build on, in preparation for broader action.
The Permanent Representatives of Muslim countries in Geneva are now working on procedures to quickly stop the egregious violations committed against Rohingya Muslims.
The representatives contacted the High Commissioner for Human Rights to issue a statement condemning these events, and contacted the Organization of Islamic Cooperation's Secretary General to express the aspiration of Muslim countries' Permanent Representatives in Geneva to conduct a full inspection visit to Myanmar to find out the real situation on the ground and support Muslims who moved out in that region.

Anak Penasihat Petronas Dapat "Anugerah Projek" Diseret Ke SPRM

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 03:22 AM PST

Gara-gara anak Penasihat Petronas mendapat anugerah projek carigali bernilai ratusan juta di perairan Kelantan, kumpulan anak-anak muda di sini membuat laporan kepada Suruhanjaya Pencegahan Rasuah Malaysia (SPRM). Gambar fail

Sapura Kencana Petroleum Bhd dianugerah projek terbabit bermula Oktober 2012 sehingga April 2016.
