There are laws in Malaysia that protect the rights of disabled persons. The Uniform Building By-Law 34A (UBBL 34A) of the Street, Drainage and Building Act has been in force since 1991 to ensure equal access to public buildings for disabled persons. The landmark Persons with Disabilities Act (Akta Orang Kurang Upaya) was enacted in 2008. Malaysia became a signatory to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in 8th April, 2008 and ratified the document in 19th July, 2010.
However, Malaysia did not sign the Optional Protocol to the CRPD. The Optional Protocol allows individuals to lodge complaints with the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities should a signatory country violates its obligations under the CRPD where the complainant has exhausted all avenues domestically.
The UBBL 34A requires that buildings constructed after it came into force be accessible to disabled persons and that buildings existing before that must be retrofitted with such facilities within three years. These facilities must comply with the Malaysia Standard MS 1184: Code of Practice on Access for Disabled Persons to Buildings. Twenty years later, many old buildings are still not renovated to comply to the by-law and newer buildings were built with facilities that are not usable and not built according to the code of practice. Furthermore, the PWD Act has not changed the situation for the better. Public transport, schools and other infrastructure are still inaccessible to disabled persons.
With these shortcomings in view, the Pusat Rakyat LoyarBurok (PRLB), a community centre run by the Malaysian Centre for Constitutionalism and Human Rights (MCCHR) and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Young Lawyers Committee (KLYLC) conducted a Strategic Litigation Workshop for disabled persons at the KL Bar Auditorium last Saturday to work on legal solutions to compel the authorities to comply with the UBBL 34A and the PWD Act. This workshop was the last of a series of four Public Interest Litigation Workshops to promote the human rights in the country.
It was unfortunate that the auditorium which was located in Wisma Kraftangan was inaccessible. There were no ramps for wheelchair users to get into the building. The venue was then changed to the Malaysian Bar Council's Raja Aziz Addruse Auditorium. The switchback ramp outside the building was rather steep and wheelchair users had difficulty ascending it independently on manual wheelchairs. There was also a safety issue with the landing where it did not have rails to prevent wheelchairs from going off the edge.
At the same time, pedestrian walkways leading to the building were fraught with poorly designed kerb ramps, drain covers with wide gaps and broken pavings. Incidentally, the Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (Kuala Lumpur City Hall) headquarters, the authority responsible for the upkeep of these facilities, is just a short walk away.
Disabled persons and lawyers at the Strategic Litigation Workshop held at the Malaysian Bar Council Auditorium.
Nevertheless, in spite of the barriers, about twenty disabled persons and an equal number of lawyers huddled in the auditorium. The workshop kicked off with the lawyers briefing the participants on the legal approaches and processes. Disabled participants also gave feedback on the problems with regards to inaccessibility to public buildings.
After tea break, participants were facilitated on their understanding on where disabled people stand in the scheme of things as citizens in this country in the session that was aptly called the Big Picture. What struck me most was how the interests of disabled people are under-represented in the entire political and administrative system. This session was followed by the Action Pyramid where various options on advocacy activities could be utilised to further the cause.
This workshop and the unfolding events represent another significant milestone in the annals of disability rights movement in Malaysia and a major step forward since the PWD Act came into force in 2008. The Kuala Lumpur legal fraternity, namely the MCCHR and KLYLC, deserve all the credit for their initiative in upholding and protecting the rights of disabled people in this country as provided for under the law.
After the conclusion of the workshop, participants were treated to a very scrumptious lunch of Peranakan cuisine at Precious Old China Restaurant & Bar in Central Market. A big thank you to all lawyers involved for generously contributing their time and effort for the betterment of disabled people in Malaysia. Things will never be quite the same for us again.

-HalimIslam

When Sofie was still alive, I used to visit the family on weekdays without much problem. (I prefer to keep Sundays for myself. Hey, I need a break too.) Even during the time when she had started her nasi lemak stall, she'd usually be home by 11 am. So I'd usually go in the afternoon to visit her family.
But ever since Sofie died in Aprill 2012, the sister Sofie trusted most, Rozi, took over as the new guardian. Rozi works Mondays to Fridays and would usually only be home at night. Nope I don't do house visits at night either.
From time to time I do go on weekdays to visit the kids when their aunt Rozi isn't around, but whenever I need to discuss some matters with Rozi, I'd have to wait for Sundays to visit them.
So yep, last Sunday I went to visit. Rozi knew I was coming. When I got to their house, the gate was open, the front door was open, but there didn't seem to be anybody around! As I got down from my car, Saiful, Sofie's 3rd child saw me and said, "Eh, makcik dah sampai!" Apparently Rozi, Saiful, Ika and Rozi's son were at the neighbour's house, just finished their lunch.
They had actually been painting their house in the morning (the landlord paid for the paint and they agreed to paint the house themselves) and with the house in a mess and smelling of paint, Rozi did not cook. When the neighbour, the same one who had been giving free tuition to Saiful and Ika, invited them over for lunch, they simply couldn't say no.
Anyway, I was told Azlan, Sofie's eldest son, was home for the weekend, but had gone out with his cousin. Azlan had completed and passed his first semester exam in IKM and has turned out to be a very responsible boy now. He is in fact already planning to go on to diploma level after he completes his certificate course in another 3 semesters.
The same can't be said about Sofie's second son, Azman. Having wanted to quit school immediately after his PMR (as a matter of fact he did not go to school when he should have), I paved the way for him to join a culinary school, knowing that's where his interest lies. Azman was happy when I arranged for him to join the culinary school. Initially he did okay, but somehow along the way, he became big-headed, he started spending as though he was rich, and he seldom went home. When Sofie died, he got even worse, going back only to the home of his other aunt who had once told the whole kampong about Sofie's HIV. When Azlan, the older brother, tried to advise him, they almost ended up in a fist-fight!
Azman had stopped going to the culinary school, before even completing his one year course. What a waste! Now he's doing odd jobs and no longer goes to see his siblings. He prefers to stay with the other aunt who doesn't encourage him to continue his studies. I can just hope that Azman will come to his senses soon before he wastes his whole future.
The 3rd child, Saiful, is in form 3 this year. He too, like his brothers, are not too much into academics, but I could see his interest lies in the mechanical field. I think it's probably best for him to join a vocational school next year, after PMR. Saiful himself is keen on the idea.
Ika, the youngest, seems to be doing better academically, although according to her aunt Rozi, she'd have to be reminded time and again to complete her homework every time.
I always remind them about the importance of education for their future. I hope they will work hard enough to get something more than just PMR or SPM. For the moment, Azman seems to be in a gone-case situation. But I hope Azlan, Saiful and ika, who I know are as disappointed with Azman as I am, will take their brother's situation as a reminder for themselves NOT to do what he did. I know these 3 are at least happy staying with their aunt Rozi, just like Sofie would have wanted them to be.

Bapa, anak kantoi khalwat
Melaka: Bapa borek anak rintik.
Ketua Pegawai Penguat Kuasa Agama JAIM, Rahimin Bani berkata, selepas menemui lelaki berstatus bukan muhrim itu anggotanya terus membuat pemeriksaan lanjut.
-HM

It is not easy to have a dog. The last time I had a dog was 27 years ago, a beautiful Golden Retriever who died tragically when she ran across the road. Then, I was up in Genting Highlands with my aunt. It was my husband who was looking after Goldie then. Needless to say, it was a very painful experience and my husband never allowed me to have another dog till Tiger came into our lives.
So far, Tiger has brought so much laughter, joy and love into our lives. I admit it has been quite challenging. Being quite an OCD character (although not a full-blown one), I have been sweeping and mopping my house a few times a day. Sometimes - six times. It was seven times yesterday and none today cos I am so tired. Then there are the walks and daily exercise we have had to give him, not forgetting talking to him, giving him body massage lovingly when he sits with us .
We took Tiger for his jabs today. Before we reached the vet's clinic, he knew. And he tugged at his leash. However, the docile darling walked in gingerly after coaxing him. The vet gave us many tips after he examined Tiger.
1. We opted for the ten in one vaccination package
2. The vet gave him a heart guard blood test and Tiger has a clean bill of health.
3. Tiger was de-wormed.
4. We bought the following stuff for him:
You can see for yourself what an adorable darling he is. :-)
Look at his handsome face after he was brushed :-).
In March he will have to go for scaling.
The bill was a bomb but it is OK cos we want to give Tiger the best because we love him. He was flat out in the car on the way home. What a darling he is!
In March he will undergo scaling as he does have bad breath. My husband has been commissioned to brush his teeth every morning!
The bill was a bomb and more than what we can afford but it is OK because we want to give Tiger the best because we love him.
Tiger is very precious to us and I cannot begin to describe we much we really love him. My son brushes his coat everyday and he get to enjoy gives walks five to six times a day. Thanks to my constant sweeping and mopping, my back injury has resurfaced and I have been in pain for two days.
Tiger loves to chew - paper and books. He pinched a book from a friend's bag a few days ago and chewed the cover. Then he loves to chew tissue boxes but I managed to solve the problem by spraying citronella oil on the tissue box and tissue box cover. So far, he seems to have developed a distaste for tissues now :-).
My beloved is a very sensitive and emotional dog. On Sunday..we were out for four hours with Nicholas' piano teacher and his wife. When we came back, Tiger had pee-ed on my favorite chair and after we took him for his walk, he ignored us the whole night!!!!
Whilst writing this mail, a courier man came to deliver a package from Poh Ai who had sent me two books on dogs and a list of toxic substances that dogs must not eat. Tiger was left standing at the main door when I went to collect it. By the time I returned three minutes later...he had pee-ed on the floor ..His way of showing his displeasure. :-(
Other than his 'tantrums'...tiger is the most adorable dog.
My son, hubby n myself love him very much n are always trying to assess who tiger loves most. He can play politics very well for in the absence if others... he is on his ultra super-duper 'I am a canine angel' behaviour.
He loves to be cuddled and massaged in the evenings n sits beside one of us on the sofa, head in the lap.
Every morning when I wake up, I am so thankful for the way Tiger entered our lives. Certainly, he has helped us to love, to care for him and most of all, he has drawn the family together.
Please leave a comment if you have any stories to share about your pets.
Please excuse me now for it is time to give Tiger his tummy tickles and massage :-).
Have a pleasant evening!
This post is dedicated to four persons:
1. Kong Loke who arranged for the adoption. Thank you!!
2. Bernard, who let us have Tiger. Thank you!
3. Poh Ai, my dear friend who has been such an inspiration guiding me along and for her gift of two books that arrived via courier service today. Thank you for being an angel!
4. Dr. Goh - who is really the best veterinarian I have ever seen in Penang! From 1973 to 1985, my dogs were under the care of four different vets. Dr. Goh is sincere, thorough and a very practical, caring vet. Thank you for the way you have taught us to give Tiger better care and love.

Najib (Razak) pula dua kali turun menyerahkan BR1M (Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia).

This post is specially for ONE PARTICULAR READER who comes into my blog occasionally and then reads MANY pages at one go.
Seriously, this is ABNORMAL behaviour. Even at the pinnacle of my net addiction in 2011, I never ever spent such a long time in any one site and certainly never read more than 5 blog posts in any site.
I blogged about this in THIS POST on November 22nd, 2012.
If I am online or alert and know that she is at it again, (YES, I BELIEVE IT IS A WOMAN based on what she reads)I will close my blog for ten to twenty minutes so that she gets the message.
If ever you click on my url and the page says SIGN INTO BLOGGER, know that I took my blog off because of HER!!!
She first came in at 8:56am this morning:
The visitor with IP:22.214.171.124 and Hostname:gw.shp.roche.com visited your site the Wed 09 Jan,08:56:36.
After she went through SEVEN pages of my blog from 08:56:36am to 9:15:52am, I closed my blog for twenty minutes. Then she went away.
At 1:43pm she returned and spent 2 hours and 28 minutes in my blog and went through 63 pages.
The visitors with IP:126.96.36.199 and Hostname:gw.shp.roche.com visited your site the Wed 09 Jan,13:43:49.
From 1:43:49 till 3:52:59pm, she went through 56 pages of my blog.
If not for the fact that I was busy with my dog who had just gone for vaccinations, I would have closed my blog for a while.
Since the time I started tracking her on Nov 21, 2012, she has gone through 389 pages of my blog. I lost the earlier configuration I set in 2011 when I tweaked my settings. Otherwise, the results would have been more shocking. These are the reasons for my reaction.
You can see my other post about her HERE where she read 202 pages in 24 hours.
1. I have publicly told this reader before:
a. Since January 3rd 2012, I do not write on politics and will never ever write on political issues again. So, there is no point scanning page by page for my articles. You can never catch me writing on political issues in my own backyard ever again.
What she does is to go to different pages and refresh. Then she scrutinizes the six posts as listed in the front page and selects what she wants to read.
b. If she is looking for any particular post, all she has to do is to write to me at writetomws at hush dot ai and I will be happy to supply her or anyone else the article she is looking for instead of her messing up my Google Analytics and statistics.
2. I study the readership trends of my blog NOT because I am a blog addict but because:
a. I want to know what are the topics that interest my readers
b. I want to know which are the peak times whereby most readers come in so that I can put more important posts there.
c. I want to know from which country they come so that I can understand the cultural background of my readers so as not to post anything which might be offensive to them.
So dear reader who uses:
Browser: Internet Explorer 8.0
Browser Language: English (United States)
Operating System: Windows 7
and comes into my blog via IP:188.8.131.52, please sign up for an email subscription to my blog via the widget in the right column that says subscribe via email and you will not have to waste time scanning through my blog the way you are doing. I am very flattered and happy you are spending time on my posts and hope you find value in the content.
But please do not mess up my blog statistics this way.
I do not want a spike in my pages viewed because of ONE PERSON and it gives me a very distorted view of public reaction to my blog content.
I try my best to meet readers' reading preferences even though 99.9% do not comment.
For other readers, many of you have subscribed but you have not verified your email address by clicking on the link Feedburner sent to you. Please do so and my blog posts will be delivered to your inbox before 6am everyday.
So to that particular reader who uses Hoffman Laroche ISP, please understand my situation and the importance of blog statistics to me.
It helps me a lot in my planning and research. So if you do wish to read, kindly do not just keep refreshing this way like what you have been doing cos each time the page refreshes, it is considered as one visit. I value honesty in statistics and hope they will be accurate.
While writing this post, she came in again:
The visitors with IP:184.108.40.206 and Hostname:gw.shp.roche.com visited your site the Wed 09 Jan,18:41:32 and went through eight pages.
At 6:50pm, I closed my blog. She left via flickspire dot com from "masterwordsmith-unplugged: The Cup or the Coffee?" at 18:50:38.
And then she came in again three minutes later:
The visitors with IP:220.127.116.11 and Hostname:gw.shp.roche.com visited your site the on Wed 09 Jan,18:53:49.
By then, I closed the blog at 18:50:50pm. And she knows I know she is here. For after that attempt, she did not try again even though she is still online.
It is now 6:59 p.m. I am posting this after I re-open my blog.
To that strange reader, kindly email me at writetomws at hush dot ai and I will be happy to engage you in a discussion.
If you want to talk to me via phone, please email me and I will be happy to call you back at my expense. I really want to know why you are doing this. Do subscribe to my feeds and I hope you will not mess up my blog statistics any more. Thank you very much.
Update: Oops she did it again:

My intan payung Nuh Rafael "Rafa". He is 6 months old now and so manja with me, i don't know how is it gonna be if I have to go outstation for work.
He is very alert of his surroundings. Last week we spent a few nights at the hotel and on the first night Rafa slept at 3am, just because he wasn't used to the new room!
And in order to get Rafa to sleep at night, both Mummy and Daddy must lay down on the bed with him in the middle so that he can roll to one side and hug's Daddy arm like a koala bear and then roll to another to hug Mummy pulak… He will golek kiri kanan until he falls asleep after a few minutes. How cute is that? But if Daddy is not in the room, trust me Rafa just won't fall asleep until probably two hours later.
He is pretty good with his hands. He can pass a toy from one hand to another and once we caught him picking up a spoon with his thumb and index finger. He likes to hold his both his feet and clap them together again and again.. Apa la Rafa.. Mummy ajar tepuk amai-amai pakai tangan bukan kaki lah! Alahai…
Praise the Al-Mighty for Rafa's good health, 6 months old and only once he had a slight fever and cough. Hopefully his eczema will also disappear soon. Amin….

-SH

I was bounding down the stairs this morning when I bumped into my aunt. Evidently, she had been waiting patiently for me to come down. Her first words: "What time is Li Chun 立春 this year?"
"Why do you want to know so early?" I asked back. "It's still more than three weeks away."
I flipped it open to the page on Year 2013. Couldn't find the date. Then I realised that Li Chun, the Coming of Spring, for 2013 was on the preceding page (on Year 2012). The book was arranged according to the Chinese lunar months and as this year's Li Chun will fall even before the first day of the new lunar calendar, the day wouldn't show on the Year 2013 page. So there it was, finally, Li Chun falling on 4 Feb 2013 which corresponds with the 24th day of the 12th lunar month. The exact time of Li Chun will be 00:15 on that day, that is, 15 minutes past midnight.
So I came downstairs again to let my aunt know. Her second request: the next time I go over to the island, she wanted me to go to her regular joss stick shop to pick up several pieces of the red paper with the Chinese character Chun 春 to stick on the family rice bucket when the day comes rolling by. I wouldn't dare ask her why she needed so many pieces when one would do. I can anticipate her answer: "to keep, lah, it won't spoil one." Irrefutable logic.

SSurah Al-Fatihah yang kita baca 17 kali dalam solat lima waktu tu bunyinya "alhamdulilahi rabbil A'LAMIN".... bukannya "alhamdulillahi rabbil MUSLIMIN..."
Jadi?

In Frontpagemag, Daniel Greensfield wrote:
Hardly had the blood been scrubbed off the floors in Newtown than everyone who was anyone had begun shifting the blame from Adam Lanza to some intangible social failure.
Back in 2002, Michael Moore trundled his bulk over to Colorado to exploit the Columbine massacre for a general rant about gun culture, American foreign policy and how hard it was to find a shop selling bacon grease by the ton at two in the morning.
In his film, which won an Oscar for Best Documentary, Moore gave his audience what they wanted, lots of scenes of "hicks and hillbillies" buying, selling and giving away guns all over the place to illustrate the murderous ravages of American gun culture. Some of those scenes were staged, but it didn't matter since Moore was catering to an audience that had nothing but contempt for working class Americans and would believe any awful thing about them.
What did gun culture have to do with a plot by two disgruntled dorks with tastes in pop culture far afield from the rural gun-loving dystopia that Moore was doing his best to depict? About as much as gun culture has to do with headcases like Adam Lanza or Jared Loughner.
Your average school shooter is unhappy and angry, irreligious, incapable of fitting into a community and filled with rage that he exercises through violent fantasies. His culture isn't gun culture. It's loner culture. Video games do not cause him to kill, but they are how he entertains himself until he can get a taste of the real thing.

- Bernama

I was at PappaRich Taipan USJ last Saturday and got to try out a new drink.
The new drink was Stevia White Coffee (Iced). It was yummy and I was lucky to have tried it.
I was told it was only available in a few outlets and would be launched in stages in all the outlets.
'So, what's so special about Stevia White Coffee?' you ask me.
Well, it is very different from the other normal sugary beverages as it has natural sweetness.
After drinking it, you do not get the sugary feeling sticking in your mouth or around your tongue.
In other words, it is smooth.
Oh yeah, if you don't like coffee, try coco.
Iced drink: RM6.90
Hot drink: RM5.90
English Malaysian Breakfast: RM13.90

Try to imagine what it may be like in another 100 years.

I have a vague feeling I have posted this before a few years ago. Getting older and more forgetful!
