The Steubenville High School Rape Case

The Steubenville High School Rape Case

The Steubenville High School Rape Case

Posted: 08 Jan 2013 08:23 AM PST

Tragically, rape culture is spreading and culprits are neither repentant nor remorseful.

BBC reports here that Three Delhi gang rape suspects to plead not guilty.

Last month, NYT reported on Rape Case Unfolds on Web and Splits City.

And today,Alternet reported on How Anonymous Hacking Exposed Steubenville High School Rape Case

What is happening to this world when young people have become numb and desensitized to committing such crimes?

Very sad. To think some still boast about how much progress has been achieved in life.

Has mankind regressed? Do share your views. Thanks!

[IKTIBAR] Kaya Pada Usia Muda Buat Safwan Tenggelam, Tak Ingat Mengucap

Posted: 08 Jan 2013 09:18 AM PST

Itulah pengalaman dikongsikan Safwan (bukan nama sebenar).

Langkah kian panjang.

Semua keseronokan dunia ingin dicuba.

Petugas ambulan minta kami ajar Min mengucap tapi entah macam mana terpacul dari mulut Jeff, 'kami tak ingat macam mana nak mengucap pakcik'.

"Petugas itu kemudiannya mengajar Min mengucap. Min menghembuskan nafas terakhir sejurus selepas itu," ujar Safwan.

Selepas kematian Min, mereka berempat agak tersentak.

Bawa haluan sendiri

Bagai dejavu, tidak lama selepas Jeff keluar, Safwan sekali lagi menerima panggilan telefon daripada orang tak dikenali. Katanya Jeff kemalangan! Maka mereka bergegas ke tempat kejadian. Sepanjang perjalanan kesemua mereka bagai tak keruan kerana masih diimbau kejadian menimpa Min yang belum pun sampai sebulan.

"Jeff meninggal dunia selepas dibawa ke hospital. Kami terduduk menerima berita itu. Ia terlalu sukar dihadamkan fikiran Belum pun hilang terkejut kehilangan Min, kini Jeff pula menyusul," ujar Safwan.

Kali ini kematian Jeff benar-benar meninggalkan impak. Safwan, Azrul dan Din bagai kehilangan kata-kata. Semuanya terlalu mengejut.

Dia masih menyatakan kekesalan atas dosa lampau.

"Din pula sampai sekarang tak tahu apa khabar berita. Terakhir saya dengar, dia sertai tabligh," kata Safwan.

-SH

Elephant Family of Eleven Killed

Posted: 08 Jan 2013 07:18 AM PST

Kenya's Wildlife Service says it is pursuing a gang of poachers they suspect of killing an entire family of 11 elephants.

The family was gunned down on Saturday in the single worst incident of ivory poaching recorded in the country.

Kenya has recently taken a more aggressive stance against poaching as it tries to combat a surge in demand for ivory from Asia.

About 100 elephants are killed each year in Kenya by poachers.

Despite a long-standing ban on the international trade, ivory from elephants is often smuggled to Asia for use in ornaments, while rhino horns are used in traditional medicine.

Saturday's killings took place in Tsavo National Park, Kenya's largest single continuous ecosystem, which is home to some 13,000 elephants.

Posted: 08 Jan 2013 06:09 AM PST

hi uollsss...

(matilah pecah lobang)

mmg lah panas..sebab ia ada ekstrak dari benda2 yang panas utk pecahkan lemak..tapi xde lah sampai melampau cepat effect dia kan... mintak maaf lah pada pengasas or egen2 yang gigih promote produk ni yang sehari 1000 kali duk upload kat facebook... gigih ni..asal bukak facebook je ade je produk yang calit jadi kurus ni...

. sibuk duk upload orang kurus pakai ni...tapi gambar tukang jual tu x tunjuk lak gemuk ke kurus.... entah2 yang tukang jual gemok cam lembu..kannnn

.kalau betul lah benda ni berkesan sangat kenapa ko x ambik je syani tu..lumur satu badan dia...agak2 bape inci hilang..agak2 kalau x berkesan..telan ngan botol2 sekali...buat testimoni...

membohong ko kan.. kalau produk ni betul2 hebat...kenapa kat USA x jual...sah sah produk ni mak jemah felda jengka yang cipta...agak2 mak jemah ada makmal ujikaji ke blakang umah dia buat kajian... kelas ko jemah...

sebelum inchloss bagai ni wujud...dolla cantek ni dah lama dah kuarkan produk ni... sejak akak kecik rasanya..x lak akak tengok orang kurus melampau2..tetap jugak orang yang jual krim kurus ni x sebaris kaya ngan donald trum..x pun staraf ngan arwah sosilawati yang berjaya tu...Dr romzi pun dah kena band...

krim cili , krim halia..krim jering..krim kerdas..bagailah yang mampu jadi kurus keluar.. berebut2 nak cakap produk dia paling hebat... contoh cam krim mustajab...ko amik nora danish jadi duta produk..sah sah betina tu besar lidi je badan dia...agak2 leh percaya ke..setakat panas, buat sapu kalau kaki kaki lengoh akak percaya..kalau kurus...harammmmmm

ko tengok gambar atas tu..jennifer hudson...dari gorila jadi kancil...ko rasa dia pakai inchloss ke...DIA BERSENAM NGAN DIET YER KAKAK KAKAK DI LUAR SANA....so kalau ko sapu 3 gudang krim pelansing pun lepas tu ko duk telan durian crepe ko rasa ko leh kurus ke...

so ko rasa kalau krim bagai ni leh kurus cepat..maka anda tergolong dalam golongan yang SEDEH!...omputih sana siap ada makmal canggeh bagai...x kan xkan lah x mampu cipta produk sapu trus jadi kurus ni...xde pun dia cipta produk cam ni...

tolong bangun dari dunia fantasi yer wahai cik kiah oiiii...

ini tidak..si cik kiah buat krim blakang rumah ..then letak testimoni kurus 5 inci 5 hari jer ko dah sibuk pecah tabung buluh ko nak pi beli kan...sanggup gadai tanah nak beli...

akak x percaya ubat ni selagi xde bukti kukuh...kalau betul leh kurus ramping akak cabar sapa2 nak bg free akak cuba..kalau berkesan..akak tarik balik kata2 akak ni...

ok sekarang pulak akak nak cakap pasal produk putihkan kulit...

lagi satu koligen rumpai laut ni... pelik aku..baru2 ni lah sibuk semua orang pi makan rumpai bagai ni...sapa lah punya idea bangang ni...

sapa punya idea lah ni kan... masalahnya sekarang je benda ni tetiba wujud... dulu dulu orang ni x terpikir makan rumpai laut...walhal orang jepun sejak zaman tuk kaduk dah makan rumpai laut...x lah dia heboh leh putih kan kulit..

lepas tu makcik2 sibuh duk beli beguni2 ...x menyempat nyempat nak makan rumpai ni... x sempat sampai rumah...dalam keter dah kuarkan skit rumpai kering ni duk tenyeh dalam mulut buat sentil demi nak putih punya pasal...sampai umah..rebus satu kawah..tuang dalam kolah..trus menyelam sampil hirup air rebus rumpai... kluar2 je ...tu dia putih kalah kapur kasut....

so kakak2 di luar sana... kalau ko p piknik kat port dikson tu... ko jangan lah berkubang saja and sibuk nak buat istana pasir...pegi terjun dalam laun sana sambil bawak raga..kutip semua rumpai laut tu..bawak balik..jual kat orang kampung...

percayalah... seminggu je hasil jualan dah boleh p haji balik hari.... dah lah putih melepak pegi haji lepas tu mabrur plak ...trus bercahaya wajah...sampai je malaysia trus lutsina hasil gabungan tadi...

lupa akak nak tanya micheal jackson sebelom dia mampus... agak2nya lah.. dia ni makan pill gluta ngan telan rumpai laut lah gamaknya leh jadi dari rentung cam arang trus jadi putih melepak...

so kat sini akak nak tegaskan ..akak cuma nak bagi pendapat akak.. sapa yang rasa marah dengan statement akak... ko telan lah benda tu sampai ko rasa leh putih cam yang ko mahukan...

kalau ko nak putih sangat ko tanya anita serawak ape dia pakai ...jawapannya " KAK NITA GUNA WUDUK JER"

yang penting..ade aku kesah...cau cin cauuu

Deepak dakwa nilai tanah Bukit Raja RM400j

-TMI

U Ba Shin (born in 1914 in Ywarkauk, Pyinmana) is a colonel, noted historian, was a member of The Myanmar History Commission and Islamic Religious Affairs Council.

Contents

Family

Ba Shin's parents were Principal U Hein and Daw Saw Yin. His wife was Daw Khin May Kyi, a retired Lecturer from Zoology Department, Yangon University. Before the Second World War, he received a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) class, specializing in Inscription and Oriental History form Yangon University.

Career

Education

From 1935-40, he worked under Professor Gordon H Luce at the Rangoon University Eastern and Burmese History Division.[1] He carried out research in China – Myanmar relations of the Middle period and the history of Chinese – Myanmar inscriptions. He was promoted to an Assistant Lecturer in that department in 1940.[2]

Military

During the Japanese occupation, Ba Shin was the Academic Officer in the Asian Youth Organization. He also worked as the Education Officer of the Burma Defense Army.[3] Later, he became a Lt. Col. in the Military Division (4) of the Burma Army. He published "Tine 4″ (Forth Military Division) newspaper and wrote a book for the soldiers called European Economic History, explaining the emergence of Capitalism.[4]

He wrote a Burmese history book for the Army that was published on 4 January 1948, Burma's Independence day. The Education Ministry prescribed that book as a high school textbook.[5] While serving in military, he wrote military, cultural and history articles in Sit Nha Lone (Military Heart) journal and Myawaddy journals. He also wrote articles for children in Kha Lae (Children) journal and Light of Myanmar newspapers. He wrote military articles in Military Education journal.[6] He worked in the Myanmar Army until 1956.

Post WW2

After the war, he worked in the war office as the registration officer. He was later appointed the Burmese Military Attaché to London, where he could meet with international researchers and historians.[7]

Research works

In 1957, Ba Shin joined the Burma Historical Commission as a Compiler. He wrote many English and Myanmar research papers in Bulletin of the Burma Historical Commission and many articles about racial and ethnic groups of Myanmar were written for the Myanmar Encyclopaedia. He wrote Lawkatheikpan in English and Myanmar before Anawrahta. One of his duties was to do detailed studies and research about Burmese history from AD 1300-1752.[8]

He worked with Professor Luce for quite a long time in Bagan at Myin Kabar Gu-pyauk Pagoda, built by Raja Kumar (Yazakumar, son of Kyansittha) in AD 1113. Their research paper was published in Burmese History Commission Journal volume 2 in 1961 from page 227-416. Not only the background history of the pagoda, but the architecture, Buddhist scriptures and all the stone inscriptions with the translations were included in the article. A complete comparison of the various Buddhist scriptures found in ancient Bagan was included. Studies of ancient Mon and Austro Asian languages and Mon grammar and spellings were mentioned.[9]

He was an important person in the team, which had done comparative studies of Sanskrit, Pali and ancient Mon. Professor Luce praised Major Ba Shin for his contribution of invaluable edits to his thirty years of research. Luce even commented that Ba Shin had even corrected his overlooked mistakes.[10]

In an article written to honour Ba Shin in relation to the Wetkyi Inn and Gu-pyauk Pagodas in Bagan, Professor Luce wrote, "He is one of the best researchers, expert in History and Stone Inscription."[11]

One of Ba Shin's best efforts was seen in the article about Bagan Pagoda Lawka Hteit Pan (Rangoon, 1962) which indicated the ancient Burmese civilization. Nai Min Nai had written an article together with A.B. Grisworld about the comments and review in Artibus Asiae volume 33, page 228-233.[12]

He was the editor of the article "Essays offered to G.H.Luce by his colleagues and friends in Honour of his Seventy-Fifth Birthday" in two volumes, Artibus Asiae supplementum XXIII, Ascona, Switzerland, 1956. He wrote the "Buddha Images of Tai Yuan Types Found in Burma" in that publication.[13]

He wrote about the Ink duplicate copies of ancient Bagan stone inscriptions in the Bagan Ink duplicate copy research journey report book. Both were published by the Burmese History Commission.[14]

He was an active member of the Myanmar Orthography (Spelling) Commission.[15] He used to help the final year history students and History Master students' research papers.[16]

Journalist

Since he was in the university, he was active in journalism. He was the Yudathan College reporter of Myanmar Alin (Light of Myanmar) and Thuraya (The Sun) newspapers.[17]

He wrote a book, Khit Thit Marga (Modern Tha Gyar Min or Sakya) in 1937 about the rebuilding of rural villages.[18]

He wrote in the Yudathan College magazine and was the Burmese section editor. He was the editor of the Mosquito hand written magazine.[19]

In 1939, he wrote an article about the modernization of Burmese rural villages together with Dr Thar Saing and Dr Andrab.[20]

His pennames were (1) San Aung, (2) Thutethi, (3) Bohmu Nyanna, (4) Taing Lay Yebawhaung, (5) Lt. Colonel Ba Shin, (6) U Ba Shin, (7) Wari San, (8) Maung Pinti, (9) Scott Boy and, (10) Bo Mhu.

He wrote articles in the Pyannya Padethar journal published by the Directorate of University Education. He also wrote research papers and articles in the magazines published by Rangoon Arts and Science University, University Burmese literature magazine, Zoology magazine, Burmese Muslim University Students' magazines, Ngwe Taryi magazine, Pyinyar Tazaung magazine, Working peoples' daily (English and Burmese).[21]

Early Myanmar History was the last article he was still writing for the Myanmar History Commission. The last article he finished was Myanmar before Anawrattha, published in sections, in the Pyannar Tazaung magazine from June to November 1968. However, he could not finish the second part of that book, Bagan era Myanmar book.[22]

As a Muslim, he worked as the Secretary General in the Myanmar Islam Religious Council until he died. He died on 7 January 1971, at 5.50 p.m. of heart disease.[23][24]

Religion and languages

Ba Shin was a Burmese Indian Muslim named Mohammad Hashim.[25] He could speak all the languages of Myanmar ethnic minorities.[26] He could also speak Mon Khmar, Tibet Bama, Thai, Chinese and many dialects of Indian language.[27] He could even understand the ancient Burmese and ancient Mon languages.

-mk

Himpunan Kebangkitan Rakyat: Perkasa lapor polis

Tan Sri Khalid Bidas Penipuan SYABAS Kaitkan Krisis Air Dengan Langat 2

Posted: 08 Jan 2013 03:19 AM PST

-SH

Gangguan bekalan air tiada kaitan Langat 2

Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim
Menteri Besar Selangor

Organic Vs Conventional

Posted: 07 Jan 2013 10:00 PM PST

Recently, NYT featured an article by Kenneth Chang on organic meat and produce.

Excerpt:

Does an organic strawberry contain more vitamin C than a conventional one?

Maybe — or maybe not.

Stanford University scientists have weighed in on the "maybe not" side of the debate after an extensive examination of four decades of research comparing organic and conventional foods.

They concluded that fruits and vegetables labeled organic were, on average, no more nutritious than their conventional counterparts, which tend to be far less expensive. Nor were they any less likely to be contaminated by dangerous bacteria like E. coli.

The researchers also found no obvious health advantages to organic meats.

Conventional fruits and vegetables did have more pesticide residue, but the levels were almost always under the allowed safety limits, the scientists said. The Environmental Protection Agency sets the limits at levels that it says do not harm humans.

"When we began this project, we thought that there would likely be some findings that would support the superiority of organics over conventional food," said Dr. Dena Bravata, a senior affiliate with Stanford's Center for Health Policy and the senior author of the paper, which appears in Tuesday's issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine. "I think we were definitely surprised."

The conclusions will almost certainly fuel the debate over whether organic foods are a smart choice for healthier living or a marketing tool that gulls people into overpaying. The production of organic food is governed by a raft of regulations that generally prohibit the use of synthetic pesticides, hormones and additives.

Not So Nice Today..

Posted: 08 Jan 2013 02:04 AM PST

Hn went early to the bus terminal to board the bus Nice.
We waited together until a bit after 1pm.

I bade her farewell with lots of hugs and kisses.
The bus was suppose to leave at 1pm for KL.
Sometimes, it is late..but for us it is alright..

I went home before the bus came.
Around 1.45pm, Hn told me the bus has still not arrived.
She couldn't lug her heavy luggage up the stairs to find out from the bus company about the delay.

I drove back to the bus terminal to assist Hn.
After she had left her stuff in the car, she went to the ticketing counter.
Apparently the lady in charge of Nice counter was out for lunch.

Hn came downstairs informing me of that.
I then decided to go upstairs to speak to the Transnasional staff.
Nice is under their company.

It could have been a very simple matter.
Just replace the ticket.

Initially they were reluctant.
"Makcik sabar yea! Tunggu2!"

I told her "saya bukan Mak Cik! Saya Datin..panggil saya Datin!"
Imagine I had to gain respect via using my title.
*Truly, I'm not that kind*

Only recently did I hear that legally the title is still mine despite my divorce.
I have tried my best not to use it..in fact never because I thought the title was automatically stripped.
Rupanya I can still use it..Yeay!

Do you know that when you look scruffy without make-up, people assume you're one of the mak cik kampung and the treatment is not so charming.
When the need arises, I'm now going to flaunt it!

After much hassle, I found out Hn was the lone passenger.
The bus driver was going to come afterall but only after he changed the tyres.

It's not that we're inconsiderate..we don't mind really.
The fact that she stood there with no seats for almost an hour amidst the exhaust fumes was already an inconvenience.
At least somebody should have notified her that the bus was not going to come.

We would have understand.
Just for a sole passenger, we would not expect the bus to drive her all the way for a 30 something ringgit fare.

Finally, I sat in the car and told Hn to take over the discussion..I was already so annoyed.
I told Hn to tell them that we were willing to pay the fine for changing the ticket to another date.

They finally relented.
She can get a replacement ticket on another day..with no denda.

To make us go through the whole run around..Nice lacked manners today.
We were made to look like fools.

What a day..next time Nice better live up to its name.
Not to spoil its good reputation, it has been Nice all along..that I cannot deny.

..some humor..

BN Reigns At The Pinnacle Of Malaysian Politics ..

Posted: 08 Jan 2013 02:17 AM PST

For PR, the dreaded fear cannot be camouflaged.
BN is hugely indestructible..for now.

Whatever combat weapons PR whipped out, BN cannot be easily defeated.
BN has been in supercharged power since Merdeka.
BN has managed to shield itself despite getting wounded with the barrage of  attacks.
Fire whatever artillery, BN remains alive and not dead meat..yet.

PR itself is on the verge of self disintegration..like Mission Impossible.
The pressure on PR is getting absolutely intense.
PR is understandably turning into a nervous wreck.
The opposition is getting to be a confusing lot..it's just not working out.
Something inside the air is not right..too many defects.
PR does not fit the criteria to kick out BN.

BN on the other hand looks incredibly cool and confident..
Great victory is still within reach..BN is a relentless fighter.
BN will undoubtedly be the formidable winner in the PRU 13..
InsyaAllah.

Against BN's agile armament, PR is now throttling even before the PRU 13 commences.
PR portrays loud tinkering empty cans compared to the more quieter, reliable and workaholic BN.

Malaysians in general are not ready to have PR as the supremo power.
PR cannot yet compete with the outstanding, favourite BN.
PR unfortunately have to continue living in wretched fantasy..

Huh? You don't believe?
Check it out! I know it sounds crappy for PR supporters.
Sorry..miraculously, that is the real life scenario.

Celebration Day: reliving the Seventies with Led Zeppelin

Posted: 07 Jan 2013 11:45 PM PST

I was at the Artist Gallery yesterday, the one at the Gurney Plaza, Penang. I walked in, saw a box set on the shelf, smoothly picked it up and promptly walked to the payment counter. The girls behind the counter observed my every move, especially since I was hardly browsing the store at all.

Their eyes lit up when they saw what I had brought along. One of them quickly ran to the front of the counter to see whether there was another copy of the box set left. Yes, there was.

Noticing my raised eyebrows at their strange reaction, they quickly explained that the box set I picked up - which comprised two CDs and two DVDs - was one of their fastest selling items. She said that at first, the store had brought in three copies of the box set but they were sold within two or three days. So the store ordered another seven copies. My copy was the sixth among the second batch, which meant that they had only one last remaining box set.

The funny thing was, they did not understand why this box set was so popular. They were utterly baffled. I don't blame them because they are so much younger than the musicians featured in the box set. I didn't tell them, but I was surprised that there were actually more people in Penang than I could give credit to that were fans of Led Zeppelin. We sure have good taste in rock music. Welcome to the club.

So this was the box set that I picked up at the music store: Led Zeppelin's Celebration Day which was recorded live at the O2 Arena in London on 10 Dec 2007. This was a reunion concert of the last three remaining members of, in my opinion, the greatest rock group in music history. I did not know that the box set had only been released in November; so I must have been very lucky that the Artist Gallery unknowingly carried it and that I happened to walk in while the box set was still available.

The reason why I was so prompt to buy the box set was because I have been aware of the concert since 2007. BTW, I wrote about it in Oct 2007 which you can read here. At that time, I was also rather envious of the people who managed to buy the concert tickets. A Led Zeppelin concert, let alone a reunion concert. In 1969, Led Zeppelin opened my mind to music. There were other genres of music apart from pop. I could never forget the occasions I heard Whole Lotta Love over the airwaves, courtesy of Radio RAAF Butterworth.

Led Zeppelin disbanded in 1980 following the death of their drummer, John Bonham. Sporadically, the remaining members had still come together for some short reunions but nothing really compared with the one at the O2 Arena in London. That it had taken so long - five years - for this concert to be released surprises me.

I must say that the music on this box set is excellent. John Paul Jones did a marvellous job with his throbbing bass lines. Jimmy Page continued to show off his guitar wizardry, squeezing out every imaginable note from the instruments. Robert Plant was in full control of his voice and reminded the audience why he remains one of the finest rock singers in the world. Jason Bonham turned in an incredible performance worthy of his father.

My breath was already taken away when I listened to the two CDs on my car audio and then through my home audio system but my admiration for the music of Led Zeppelin was complete when I finally managed to play the DVDs and sit through the full concert.

There was such an incredible display of power and musicianship. Staggering, considering that these were three old men - in 2007, Jimmy Page was already 64 years old, Robert Plant 60 years old, John Paul Jones 62 years old - who were joined on stage by a comparatively youthful Jason Bonham at 42 years old. Today, as I add a further five years to their ages, I continue to appreciate the music of Led Zeppelin.

So what are on the CDs and the DVDs? Basically, the same set of songs for either an audio or visual feast. You take your pick. But you get two hours of solid rock music. Sixteen songs that could be considered the cream from nine studio albums.

The concert opened with Good Times, Bad Times, which was the first song from their very first album, Led Zeppelin, and this was followed by Ramble On from Led Zeppelin II and Black Dog from their untitled fourth album. Like I mentioned earlier, Jason Bonham did a very fine job attacking the skins, ala his father.

In quick succession, the group followed with In My Time Of Dying from Physical Graffiti, For Your Life from Presence, Trampled Under Foot from Physical Graffiti, Nobody's Fault But Mine from Presence, No Quarter from Houses Of The Holy, Since I've Been Loving You from Led Zeppelin III, Dazed And Confused from Led Zeppelin, Stairway To Heaven from the fourth album, The Song Remains The Same from Houses Of The Holy, Misty Mountain Hop from the fourth album and Kashmir from Physical Graffiti.

There were two encores that closed the concert: their signature Whole Lotta Love from Led Zeppelin II which defined their music for me and Rock And Roll from the fourth album.

[HKR 112] Rakyat Bangkit Kerana SPR & Kerajaan Pekakkan Telinga Terhadap Tuntutan BERS✔H

Posted: 08 Jan 2013 01:19 AM PST

Walaupun Tidak Diendahkan, Rakyat Perlu Terus Tekan SPR

Bantah ikut perundangan diabai, ayuh turun 12 Januari

Semua bentuk bantahan yang mematuhi saluran undang-undang sudah digunakan demi membaiki sistem pilihan raya tetapi Suruhanjaya Pilihan Raya (SPR) enggan melaksanakan lapan tuntutan Bersih.

Aktivis sosial, Hishamuddin Rais kesal kerana tiada satu pun tuntutan dilaksanakan, malah penggunaan dakwat kekal yang dilihat satu-satunya 'harapan' dikhianati SPR melalui tipu muslihat.

Perhimpunan kelmarin merupakan 'road show' peringkat negeri Pahang rapat kemuncak 'count down' HKR 112 satu juta rakyat Sabtu ini.

Turut berucap Pengerusi Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) Badrul Hisham Shaharin, aktivis Hishamudin Rais, Ketua PKR Pahang Datuk Fauzi Abdul Rahman, Adun Sekincan Ng Suee Lim, aktivis mahasiswa Safuan Anang dan Adun Kuala Semantan Syed Hamid Syed Mohamad.

HM Brunei Sultan should take action on his subjects who gag Dr. Zarni

Posted: 07 Jan 2013 10:26 PM PST

I heard that His Majesty Brunei Sultan had even shed tears after watching the news clip of Rohingya massacre.

TQ Tuanku. Daulat Tuanku.

Please kindly remove or demote or severely reprimand those University authorities and compensate Dr. Zarni by donating generously for his Multi-citizenry Human Rights Project for Myanmar which would try to educate people of Myanmar to recognize equal Rights and Human Rights of all the citizens including Myanmar Muslims and Rohingyas.

Starting 1st. January 2013, Brunei will be chairing the ASEAN.

Institutions in Brunei especially Brunei University should be ashamed of their cowardice.

They not only ignored the plight of the fellow Muslim Rohingya people, who are subject to Ethnic Cleansing by Racist Rakhines with the tactic encouragement by Myanmar Security Forces and Government of Myanmar.

Brunei is already filthy rich and no need to afraid of loss of chance to exploit Burma. Shame on them because Allah had given more than enough wealth but they are still greedy to corroborate with the Islamophobic Apartheid Myanmar Government and Military.

Shame on you Brunei authorities, please kindly repent before Allah punish for this crime for ignoring the plight of oppressed downtrodden Muslims of Myanmar especially Rohingyas.

NOW PLEASE READ DR. ZARNI'S RESIGNATION LETTER HERE @ his blog

Dr. Maung Zarni: Resignation Letter

To: Universiti Darussalam Brunei (UBD)

Dear Vice Chancellor Zul and Assistant Vice Chancellor Anita,
It is with deep regret that I am writing to you to submit my resignation from the post of Associate Professor with the Institute of Asian Studies at the Universiti Darussalam Brunei (UBD).
You were both the key members of the interview team which recruited me to come and work for the University a little over a year ago. I was very much impressed by your narrative of UBD being a place for open intellectual inquiry, supportive bureaucracy, and the new drive for innovation and research. This description of UBD was central to my decision to accept the post.
Months before I arrived in Brunei and officially joined the UBD on 3 Jan 2012, the then Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, where I would be based, assured me in writing that there was academic freedom for faculty, and I should only steer clear only of two taboo subjects, namely the Sultan and Islam.
But my first-hand one-year professional experience at the UBD has been anything but positive, intellectually and professionally, save the experience of teaching and providing academic support to my Bruneian students.
In June 2012, I travelled to London and joined a highly distinguished LSE panel of experts and practitioners in the fields of human rights and the rule of law including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Sir Geoffrey Nice, deputy head of the ICC Tribunal for Slobodan Milosevic, and LSE Professor Mary Kaldor. UBD authorities punished me by withdrawing UBD's financial and institutional support 24 hours before my flight to London left , forcing me to take a personal annual leave for this important occasion, and pay for an expensive $3,000 last minute flight and instructing me, in writing, NOT to use the UBD's name even for affiliation purposes for the LSE roundtable program and to ensure that my contribution to the panel discussion be "purely academic" – something which given the political role of Aung San Suu Kyi in Burma is entirely impossible.
Upon return I was called in by Professor Chee-Kiong Tong, my immediate line manager and Strategic Advisor to the Vice Chancellor, and emphatically told "everyone is watching you", insinuating that I was being spied on by neighbouring countries, merely for my role in this high-profile event – , something any credible university would both support and take pride in. In addition, I was told by Professor Chee-Kiong Tong that I should restrict my work to non-Burma related issues or write only "purely academic" papers, effectively attempting to gag me on my area of academic and professional expertise.
As a socially engaged academic with a known activist background – I was 100% transparent during the recruitment process in my CV and during the job interview in London about my years of human rights activism on the military-ruled country of mine, Burma – I simply could not conscience allowing my employer to intimidate me into professional silence on unfolding human rights atrocities and war crimes against Myanmar's Muslims and ethnic minorities in Burma on account of a monthly pay check.
In fact, I am the only Burmese academic who is researching, publishing and speaking out against what the Organization of Islamic Conference/Cooperation (OIC) officially refers to as "genocide against the Muslim Rohingya" in Western Burma committed by the collaborating political and social forces, namely the Rakhine "Buddhists" and the Government of Burma itself.
There were other events and articles that I have been prevented from contributing to, or have been made acutely aware of UBD's displeasure with my contribution in no uncertain terms by UBD authorities. These include writing an invited guest editorial on Burma's transition for National University of Singapore LKY School's peer-reviewed Asian Journal of Public Affairs for its February 2013 Special Issue on Burma and being invited to Singapore-based Channel News Asia's live premier debate on the question of democratization in Burma.
Besides the UBD's preemptive attempts to stop me from performing my professional public service to the wider Asian public, I have been derided, in writing, for participating in them, being told that they are trivial, luxurious and culturally inappropriate acts which only liberal universities in the West allow their faculty members to engage in.
I have also been prevented from carrying out my own UBD-assigned central professional assignment, namely to develop a key research and publication program on the South China Sea. Just weeks before the scheduled international seminar on the S. China Sea which I was tasked to organize, I was instructed to 'postpone it until next year' – causing me considerable professional embarrassment in front of some of the world's most esteemed scholars on the S. China Sea. For the topic of the S. China Sea was finally deemed too sensitive a subject even to discuss among a small group of about 15 invited – and confirmed – academics and policy practitioners from ASEAN, China, Australia, Europe and N. America.
Recently, at the UBD-NUS co-sponsored Inter-ASEAN Universities Conference on human insecurities in Asia, I read a research paper on the plight of the Rohingya people, based on my own field work with fleeing Rohingya refugees, members of the Presidential Inquiry Commission, local Rakhines and the UN staff based in Western Burma where large-scale 'sectarian' violence broke out.
Under pressure from none other than Myanmar Embassy/Government, the UBD initially prevented its own Southeast Asian Studies students with a concern for and an interest in the Rohingya persecution from attending my session- a decision that was later reversed because the chair of my panel Professor Gary Jones insisted that UBD research students ought to hear my academic presentation.
Finally, the Senior Management of the University instructed me NOT to accept any direct invitation to give lectures or briefings on any issue from outside institutions – not even Brunei's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. I was told that any institution that wishes to invite me must send their official written requests to the Vice Chancellor who will then decide whether I should be allowed to accept the invitation. To my deep dismay, I have found a greater degree of intellectual and professional openness in such non-academic institutions here, namely Brunei's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Ministry of Defence vis-a-vis the Universiti Brunei Darussalam.
I was genuinely committed not only to my role in research and publication, but also in institution building and public service in the form of 'public intellectual activities' such as informing the public at large about important issues including human rights, democratization and social justice in Burma and internationally. It is will deep regret that I have come to the conclusion that, given the restrictions imposed on me professionally by the extreme institutional and professional censorship within UBD, it is no longer possible for me to maintain my productivity or make valuable contributions to UBD's stated objective of being ranked in Top 50 in Asia by 2015. Neither is it possible for me to maintain my professional or personal integrity.
Starting 1 January 2013, Brunei will be chairing the ASEAN, and as the first professor in the Institute of Asian Studies and a noted expert on Burmese affairs, I have already been asked to give my expert comments or write commentaries on policy-relevant issues such as the Rohingya, the South China Sea, human insecurities and civil society. However, I feel that in sharing my expertise on these issues with the public or small groups of diplomats, my position at UBD will be compromised due to the institutional censorship, placing me in an impossible professional position.
In light of the intensification of the restrictions placed on my professional activities in the recent months, I feel that with Brunei taking over the chair of ASEAN, my ability to function in the immediate future with professional integrity will be compromised beyond the levels to which I am prepared to accept. Thus my resignation is effective immediately – from Jan 1st- the beginning of Brunei's ASEAN chair and before the start of the 2013 academic year on Jan 7th.
I believe I was mislead regarding the professional environment at UBD during the recruitment process, and due to the on-going attempts to gag me on the persecution and slaughter of minorities, including Muslim minorities, in the country of my birth, I no longer wish to be subject to this level of extreme and unprofessional academic censorship. I need to work at a professional institution where the word 'politics' is mentionable, social conscience livable, and compassion honourable.
On a personal level, I wish you both all the very best in 2013. Anita, I greatly appreciated your personal intervention to overturn the initial decision to prevent me from attending the public seminar with Professor Amartya Sen at Columbia University on the conflicts in Burma in September. Unfortunately, good individuals are not an antidote to illiberal institutions.

Is UN and ICC dragging their feet to protect Rohingyas because they are waiting the green-light from US?

Is UN and ICC dragging their feet to protect Rohingyas because they are waiting the green-light from US? It will not come until and unless Myanmar Military and U Thein Sein's government engage the reverse gear after 2015 election.

The ICC: Protection for the Rohingya By Regina Paulose,January 7, 2013

In November 2012, the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) of the ICC released its Report on Preliminary Examination Activities 2012, which examines situations in various countries for acts which could potentially amount to crimes against humanity and/or war crimes. Some of the countries mentioned in this report are North Korea, Columbia, and Afghanistan.[1] While one could question some of the cases the OTP is currently investigating,[2] this author takes the position that there are other atrocious human rights situations which need the immediate attention of the ICC. In particular, the OTP should begin to make efforts to investigate and address the continued persecution and abuse of the Rohingya population in Burma.[3]
The Status Quo Conflict and Response
According to some scholars, the Rohingya's origins are not entirely clear.[4] Setting aside this debate, the Rohingya mainly reside in Burma on the western side. The Rohingya are a Muslim minority in Burma where the majority of the population is Buddhist. It is estimated that there are currently 800,000 to 1 million Rohingya living in Burma. Since the 1970's the regime in Burma has been trying to drive out or restrict the Rohingya.[5] This sentiment was put into law in 1982 when it created a Citizenship Law, which mandates that a person must prove their Burmese ancestry dating back to 1823 in order to have freedom of movement and access to other basic rights such as education in the country.[6] (Recall: Armenian Genocide and Nazi Germany). This law is one of the prime reasons why the Rohingya have become "stateless."
The Rohingya have been the target of violence and recent clashes, which has left "dozens dead and tens of thousands internally displaced."[7] One does not have to look further than the last 8 months to truly see how the regime continues to treat the Rohingya. In June 2012, an outbreak in communal violence between the Buddhist and Muslim Rakhine and the Rohingya lead to massive sweeps resulting in detention of Rohingya men and boys. (Recall the massacre at Srebrenica). Reports indicated that these groups were subject to ill treatment and were held "incommunicado."[8] In October 2012, satellite images showed that homes of the Rohingya were being destroyed by security forces. The security forces then overwhelmed and cornered the Rohingya to drive them out of the area. This destruction is on top of the gruesome reports of beheading and killing of women and children.[9] (Recall: Rwanda).
Faced with no other alternatives and with no access to justice in their country, the Rohingya have begun to flee only to be met with rejection from other countries. On the first day of 2013, some members of the Rohingya group were intercepted by Thai authorities and were deported back to Burma.[10] The Thai Navy is under orders to send them away from Thailand. Bangladesh has also expressed that it is not willing to accept Rohingya into their country.
Some countries however are reaching out to the Rohingya. Malaysia does accept the Rohingya as refugees. Iran recently sent humanitarian aid in order to help and has called upon the UN to take action.[11] Regionally, ASEAN offered to conduct "talks" but that was "rejected." The regime explained that it sees the escalating violence as an "internal problem."[12]
After a close examination of these events, the U.S. Presidential visit in November 2012, made the waters murky. President Obama felt that Burma was "moving in a better direction" and that there were "flickers of progress." During the visit the President met with an advocate of the Rohingya population. While President Obama stated that his visit was not an endorsement of the current government, simple questions arise as to what the U.S. would be willing to do (or not do) to prevent this sectarian violence from escalating.[13] Not surprisingly, after the visit, Thein Sein made 2013 human rights news, when his regime admitted to using air raids against the Kachin rebels who are battling the government for control over certain territories.[14]
The ICC and its potential involvement
There are two interesting points of discussion that this scenario creates. The first is how the OTP would be able to meet jurisdictional requirements if it were to seriously consider prosecution. The controversial propio motupowers of the Prosecutor would allow her to investigate this situation. Articles 13, 15, and 53 of the Rome Statute require temporal jurisdiction, territorial or personal jurisdiction, and material jurisdiction. In addition, there are requirements in the Statute concerning admissibility. Burma is not a state party to the Rome Statute. The real challenge with this case would be with meeting the territorial or personal jurisdiction elements. Of course the easiest way to meet this requirement would be if the UN Security Council (UNSC) would be willing to refer the case as it did with Bashir of Sudan.[15] As stated above, the U.S. Presidential visit does not make clear at this time what the U.S. position would be, especially considering the U.S. also eased sanctions, perhaps as a symbol of new relations, on the regime in November.
Another interesting point of discussion also concerns the potential charges. This author believes that this is a strong case for various charges under crimes against humanity. Charges under war crimes would prove to be interesting, depending on how the situation is viewed. As previously noted, the regime has continuously called the situation with the Rohingya an "internal problem." The situation with the Rohingya can be distinguished from the conflict with the Kachin rebel/soldiers who are fighting for territory and independence.
Some other kind of action is now necessary besides dialogue and commentary from high level UN officials. Our cries of "never again" have become hollow. The purpose of the ICC should be to facilitate deterrence in addition to punish perpetrators of grave crimes. The international community waits for these situations to become so grave that every action becomes too late. We cannot say we are students of history, when we continually are faced with the same situations over again and repeat the same mistakes. Our ability to ignore tragedy has come at the expense of hundreds of thousands of lives.
[1] A copy of this report can be found at ICC Coalition website which keeps an excellent record of documents pertaining to the ICC and the OTP: http://www.iccnow.org/?mod=browserdoc&type=14&year=2012
[2] This author questions some of the potential charging decisions being made by the ICC – for instance – the case involving North Korea and South Korea, is a clear act of aggression, but is under examination as a war crime. The death toll in this case is 22 people. The OTP is spending resources in Colombia, to assess whether the government is prosecuting the FARC properly. The author concurs that these cases are worthy of ICC attention, but questions why the ICC wont deal with situations that are ongoing which need immediate intervention. (Besides financial reasons).
[3] The great name debate: the U.S. recognizes the official name of the country as Burma. Myanmar is the name was introduced by the former military regime, 23 years ago, and is preferred by the current regime. President Obama reportedly did refer to the country as Myanmar out of diplomatic courtesy when meeting with Thein Sein, President in November 2012. [VIDEO] Rakyat Dok Tunggu 'Roti Deepak' Bukan Roti 1Malaysia!

Posted: 07 Jan 2013 10:09 PM PST

-misaimerah
Deepak: Perlu sidang khas parlimen bersihkan Najib

Tahun baru, pilihan baru

NURUL IZZAH ANWAR
8 Januari 2013

Tahun baru, pilihan baru!
