Lahad Datu standoff: What are we waiting for?

Lahad Datu standoff: What are we waiting for?

Lahad Datu standoff: What are we waiting for?

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 09:27 AM PST

Alamak!

Now they are the ones who fired warning shots at us! Who are the intruders, us or the Kiram Sulu followers occupying a village in Lahad Datu, Sabah?

This Sultan Kiram is now on Manila's wanted list for what he did but Kiram instead warned Manila not to meddle in his affairs and demanded Kuala Lumpur for a dialogue when his claim on Sabah, OUR LEGITIMATE TERRITORY, stays!
The Filipino group, holed-up in Lahad Datu for the third week, confirmed reports of gunfire about 24 hours ago but claimed that they were merely shots to warn off the Malaysian security forces.
Azzimudie Kiram, the brother of self-proclaimed Sulu sultan Jamalul Kiram III, told Malaysiakini that a sentry spied six Malaysian soldiers approaching Kampung Tanduo some 130km from Lahad Datu town at around 5pm yesterday and fired into the air.
"Everybody jumped and went there, so I followed. When I arrived, I asked him (the sentry) what had happened.
"They told me that the shots were aimed at the sky to warn them that they have been spotted. According to them there were six Malaysian soldiers in three groups and they ran away," he said over the phone.
So, what is there to discuss? They are a lot of uncivilised people who went against all international law and convention, putting up a demand that could heavily cost Malaysia's good relations with the Philippines.

Come on, Hisham, Zahid and Anifah. Time's up! No more extension to demands for 'rooms for negotiation'. They toyed around with our patience and integrity, snubbing at their own President at Malacanang and refused to leave or surrender.

These people are terrorists!

If they know their rights, they must recognise others' too. Not only had they breached our immigration law but also our security line by bringing in guns and ammo of all sorts. Had we shot them before they landed on our beach, would it be wrong?

Now, they are taking advantage of our patience and 'goodwill' by prolonging the conflict. What is our final stand here?

The 3-week standoff is already putting us as the 'hooligans' to Philippines media, with reports that the drama is taking its toll on Filipinos working in Sabah, that many employers are already sacking them over the Lahad Datu issue.
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 28 – The intrusion of almost 200 armed Filipinos in Lahad Datu has caused the termination of many Filipino workers in Sabah, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported today.
Inquirer.net, the online news site of the Philippine Daily Inquirer broadsheet, reported today that several Filipinos lost their jobs as laundry and oil palm plantation workers in Tawau and Semporna since last week, after the Lahad Datu stand-off began on February 9.
"She (Myrna) told me her employer advised her to go home so she would not be implicated in the Lahad Datu situation," Madeline, the mother of a laundry attendant called Myrna, was quoted as saying by the Inquirer today, without giving their last names.
But nobody is defending us or rebutting such stories!

'Susah-susah', just let them stay!

[PANAS] PI Bala Dedah Najib Dalang Pembunuhan Altantuya

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 09:43 AM PST

Beliau mendedahkan perbualan Razak bersama seorang individu ketika pertemuan mereka.

"Kemudian saya tanya kenapa tak buat laporan polis?

Kemudian Razak kata 'lengahkan dia, tunggu sampai orang saya sampai'," kata Bala.

Sah Najib terlibat

Menurut Bala lagi, beliau hanya mengetahui kematian Altantuya selepas dipanggil ke Ibu Pejabat Kontinjen (IPK) pada November 2006.

"Sewaktu (saya) bertemu Razak dan peguam Puvanendran, Razak menerima SMS dan menunjukkan kepada kami kandungan SMS itu – "Meeting IGP at 11am, be cool". (Pada SMS itu) tertera nombor Datuk Seri Najib Razak. Maka terjawablah VVIP yang terlibat," kata Bala disambut sorakan hadirin.

Mengesahkan lagi keterlibatan Najib, Bala memberitahu, adik Najib, Datuk Nazim Razak pernah berjumpanya, mengugut dan mengarahkan beliau menukar akuan bersumpah pertama.

"Saya dipanggil ke hotel untuk bertemu Nazim. Nazim tanya saya, kamu sayang keluarga kamukan?

Panelis melibatkan kartunis politik, Zunar; Pengarah Eksekutif Suaram, Cynthia Gabriel, manakala Penyelaras SAMM, Badrul Hisham Shaharin selaku moderator.

Laporan polis.

Awak sepatutnya sudah buat laporan polis."

Balasubramaniam mendakwa Razak mengupahnya untuk menghalang Alantuya, namun beliau menasihati Razak supaya membuat laporan polis.

Balasubramaniam mendakwa, Razak bagaimanapun enggan berbuat demikian kerana "seorang VVVIP terlibat".

BURMA: Reform process hindered by two sources of governing power

Wednesday, 27 February 2013 18:00 Sai Wansai

President Thein Sein on Tuesday, February 26, met Norway's prime minister as he kicked off a 10-day visit to Europe aimed at forging stronger ties between Burma and the West. He will be visiting Finland, Austria, Belgium and Italy before returning home on March 8.

Hardly has he landed in Oslo, he was confronted by a group of exiled demonstrators, made up of non-Burman ethnic and pro-democracy group, who wanted to highlight the true nature prevailing in Burma.

When asked by the BBC why they were demonstrating, one participant said that even though the government has been emphasizing internationally about its democratization process, the reality on the ground is that civil war is ongoing with no real change for the people basically. He also said that the country is still a partly military and partly civilian administration, which they like to inform the real situation to the Norwegian public. According to the BBC, the said exiled group is to meet President Thein Sein today, where he will answer questions and clarify the government positions, probably ranging from the issues of civil war to 2008 military-privileged, Constitution.

While the Oslo exiled group is somewhat reluctant to endorse the President fully for his reform process undertakings, Democratic Voice of Burma (DVD) deputy editor-in-chief said: "This kind of visit is important in the context of political change in the country because President Thein Sein and the reformers in this current government need encouragement and support from the international community so that the hardliners who oppose transformation can be isolated."

The President Delegation spokesman, U Ye Hut told the BBC recently that no signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) will be on the agenda with any country.

Yesterday, after meeting with Norway Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, Thein Sein said: "We wish to learn from you the manners in which we can manage these resources to the benefit of our people." He also called for more cooperation between the two countries, which are both rich in energy resources but at very different stages of development.

All in all, it seems, judging from what he had told Stoltenberg, Thein Sein generally intends to lobby for more backing for his reform process, including the field of capacity-building and economic development. But U Ye Htut, in his recent interview with the BBC, said General Soe Win will be also clarifying the government position on peace process.

Meanwhile, the offensive in Shan and Kachin States continue on and off, depending on the mood of the Burma Army, buttressing the fact that the country is ruled by a dual-system of military and quasi-civilian government, with two sources of power competing with each other.

Kachin News Group reported on 25 February that fighting between the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and Burma military broke out last weekend near Sawlaw and Chipwe in northern Kachin state. The clashes started after government troops from Infantry Battalion 29 attacked the KIA Battalion 10 on Saturday. Chipwe, located north east of the Kachin state capital Myitkyina, is home to a small 2,000 MW dam built to supply electricity for the construction of the now officially suspended Myitsone dam.

Shan Herald Agency for News also reported recently that the government troops attacked Shan State Progressive Party/Shan State Army (SSPP/SSA) in northern Shan State, Tang Yang area and also Restoration Council of Shan State/ Shan State Army (RCSS/SSA) in Kholam area, Southern Shan State during the last two weeks of February, breaching the ceasefire agreements signed by both the SSAs. The armed clashes between the Burma Army and the two SSAs is now said to number more than 100 times. A peculiar situation for a ceasefire agreement, which would have long been terminated if this happen in other countries.

But an optimistic, Minister U Aung Min, who is also vice-chairman of the government's Union Peace Working Committee, told the reporters that the clashes were the result of a misunderstanding between low-level troopers, at the Myanmar Peace Centre on Saturday.

Aung Min confirmed the clashes between the SSPP/SSA and government troops on February 19 and 20. "It happened because of a misunderstanding between lower level troops. No fighting occurred yesterday or today. Similar incidents might happen in other countries. This will not disrupt the peace talks," he said.

"A ceasefire is a firm foundation for peace, but we have much to discuss after ceasefires. It is difficult to hold talks while carrying weapons. Such an incident might happen between low-level troops because they are carrying weapons. This is a further issue to discuss. We are holding talks alternatively with armed ethnic groups," Aung Min said.

Whatever the case, whether the Thein Sein headed, powerful, National Defense and Security Council (NDSC) dominated by the military or Thein Sein led Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) government is making the decision on the process of ongoing ethnic armed conflict is unknown. Some even speculate that the former strongman, General Than Shwe has his own shadow government in Naypyitaw and make all important decisions for Thein Sein regime.

Tutu Says Burma Must Avoid ‘New Apartheid’

RANGOON — South African peace activist Desmond Tutu called on Burma's leaders to embrace the idea that "freedom is cheaper than oppression" during his first visit to the country, and pressed them to end violence against Rohingyas and other minorities.Speaking on Wednesday at Rangoon's Baldwin Library, run by the US embassy, Tutu laced his talk with coded references to the ongoing racist attacks against Rohingya Muslims and wars in ethnic areas, which he said threatened a "new apartheid."

"If you want to truly be free then it must be all of you together," he told the 100-strong audience that included former political prisoners, ethnic leaders and monks who spearhead the 2007 Saffron Revolution.

"Very many people around the world have held you in their hearts, have prayed for you and continue to do so," he said. "I met former political prisoners yesterday and told them you belong to an aristocracy whose members include Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela."

Tutu, a former bishop who played a key role in South Africa's anti-apartheid movement in the 1980s, drew parallels with his country's experience and showed the advantages that come from embracing democracy.

"You don't have to contend with sanctions, you don't have to spend resources keeping people under lock and key, you can participate in international business and sport, you can attract tourists.

"And the most important thing … is that this is a moral universe. Right and wrong matter."

He praised Burma's President Thein Sein for the changes he has helped bring about in the country, but also stressed the "ongoing suffering of our Rohingya sisters and brothers."

"Don't say there are others that are not even allowed to travel freely," he said. "Don't say 'No, you don't belong here.' Because the world will say, 'Ah – there's a new apartheid' and we know what the world did to South Africa's apartheid."

Abu Tahay, a Rohingya community leader in the audience, said Tutu's words offered a guide to help Burma reach its goal of peace and harmony.

"If you see people as human, our goal is quite close. If you base on nationality, our goal will become far away," he said.

Rapes by Burmese security forces ‘may cause more strife’ in troubled region

GUARDIAN UK. Rapes by Burmese security forces 'may cause more strife' in troubled region in Bangkok guardian.co.uk, Tuesday 26 February 2013

Teenage victim describes how at least 13 women were raped overnight in Arakan state, which has been focus of ethnic riots

Over 90,000 Rohingya refugees have been displaced due to violence between Muslim Rohingya and Rakhine Buddhists in Burma, and many are seeking help in Bangladesh. Video from June 2012. Link to video: Rohingya refugees leave Burma to seek help in Bangladesh

At least 13 women, including teenagers, have been subjected to prolonged rape by Burmese security forces in a remote village in the western state of Arakan. Human rights groups have warned that the incident threatens to trigger further violence in a region where several waves of ethno-religious rioting since June last year have killed more than 1,000 people.

The women all belong to the Muslim Rohingya minority, which has borne the brunt of fighting between Muslim and Buddhist communities. One victim, an 18-year-old girl who cannot be named for security reasons, described how a group of uniformed soldiers from Burma's border security unit, known locally as NaSaKa, entered her house in northern Maungdaw township shortly after midnight on 20 February.

"They took us separately to different places and tortured and raped us," she said, referring also to her mother and younger sister, 15. The ordeal lasted until dawn, she said. "They came in and out of the house at least 15 times. They also beat my mother with a gun and dragged her outside to the road and beat her to the ground."

According to the victim, 13 people in the village were assaulted. Chris Lewa, head of the Arakan Project, which has monitoring teams in Maungdaw township, said she had separately confirmed that at least 11 people were raped that night.

The incident comes eight months after the rape of a 26-year-old Buddhist woman by three Rohingya men triggered fierce rioting across Arakan state , and a state of emergency remains in place. Arakanese and Rohingya communities have clashed a number of times. Animosity toward the Muslim group is widespread among Arakanese, many of whom consider them to be illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.

"Sexual violence by Nasaka against Rohingya women has been documented for many years," says Matthew Smith, a researcher with Human Rights Watch, adding that prosecutions are rare for rapes committed by security forces.

Khin Ohmar, founder of the Women's League of Burma, said that such ordeals terrorise the community. "I've heard of cases where rape survivors are kicked out of their village because the village head is so scared of retribution if they complain to the Burma army."

She said that incidents like these happen "every time the army moves into remote areas", and that punishment is normally just transferral to another area "where rape continues but with different women". She thinks that the 20 February incident probably had its roots in "ethno-centric chauvinism and hatred" of the Rohingya.

Following the attacks, villagers fled into nearby forests and across the border into Bangladesh, said Lewa. The victim told the Guardian that she and the other women had received treatment at a local clinic. The extent of their injuries is unclear, although one 19-year-old woman is believed to be in a critical condition.

The protracted violence in Arakan state has left deep scars for communities on both sides. The UN estimates the number of people displaced since June to be around 120,000, the majority Rohingya.

There are fears however that the violence, which initially pitted Rohingya against Arakanese, is increasingly being demarcated along religious lines. Rioting broke out in Rangoon this week after a row over what local Buddhists claimed was the illegal construction of a mosque. The Norway-based Democratic Voice of Burma news organisation also reported last week that the government had placed a ban on all Muslims leaving the Arakanese town of Thandwe, although no official statement has been made.

Buddhist and Muslim communities in Arakan state have now been segregated. In the state capital of Sittwe, all but one Muslim district was razed and emptied last year; the last remaining quarter, Aung Mingalar, whose population swelled from 5,000 to 8,000 residents after fighting broke out, is now guarded by soldiers.

Following a visit to several camps for the displaced this month, UN envoy Tomas Quintana spoke of his concern about aid distribution and freedom of movement. Despite government assurances that displaced Rohingya could eventually return to their homes, Quintana said that stakeholders in Arakan state believed "the current settlements will become permanent".

The medical charity Médecins sans Frontières (MSF) has warned that its staff have received threats from local Arakanese when attempting to get aid to the Rohingya. "It's just awful intimidation and threats of violence from a small but vocal group, through phone calls and on social media," said Peter Paul de Groote, Head of Mission for MSF in Burma.

"Formal permission for access is not the main problem. A big obstacle for MSF is not having enough staff – doctors and other essential personnel are scared to work in Rakhine [Arakan] state." He added that with monsoon season approaching, "we can expect a real humanitarian problem".

It is dangerous for Muslims of Myanmar because the Myanmar Government is wrong

Myanmar elite must alter their thinking on the Rohingya –
Supalak Ganjanakhundee The Nation February 27, 2013

The issue of the Rohingya and violence in Myanmar's western state of Rakhine will never be resolved unless the elite in the country adjust their attitude towards this ethnic minority and include them in the notion of a state.

Strong reaction from lawmakers, legal experts and citizens of Myanmar against a call for a citizenship law amendment made by Thomas Quintana, the UN's Human Rights Envoy to Myanmar a week ago, shows the complexity and sensitivity of the issue in the country.
Quintana recommended Myanmar amend the 1982 citizenship law to end discrimination against many ethnic groups, notably the Muslim Rohingya who are in conflict with the Buddhist Rakhine and authorities.

The UN official, indeed, is not the first person to address this issue of improving the human rights record in Myanmar. Many progressive figures, rights groups and non-government organisations, have consistently urged authorities to adjust the law to fit to new circumstances in a modern world.

To their concern, the law narrowly defines only some, not all, ethnic people as citizens of Myanmar.

Article 3 of Chapter II of the law says "nationals such as the Kachin, Kayah, Karen, Chin, Burman, Mon, Rakhine or Shan and ethnic groups as have settled in any of the territories included within the State as their permanent home from a period anterior to 1185 BE, 1823 AD are Burma citizens."

The law defines Burmese as Burman and uses the term 'Burma citizen' as it was written before the name of the country was changed to Myanmar.

Myanmar registered 135 ethnic groups as its citizens, but Rohingya, whom the authorities call Bengali, were not included as an ethnic grouping in the country under the 1982 law.

The Deputy Minister for Immigration and Population Kyaw Kyaw Tun, replied to a question by Khin Saw Wai, an MP representing Rakhine State, during a parliamentary session of the Lower House last week, that there were no Rohingya in Myanmar.

"There has never been a Rohingya race in Rakhine State. According to the censuses conducted in 1973 and in 1983, the country's ethnic groups include no Rohingya. That term was not mentioned either in the British gazettes," Kyaw Kyaw Tun said.

According to the census, non-ethnic citizens in Myanmar included Chinese, Indian, Pakistani, Bengali and Nepalese, he said.

Bengali, the term used by Myanmar authorities and the elite in the country, were migrants taken by the British Empire into Myanmar before it regained independence in 1948. They were made to engage in farm work.

Myanmar did not accept other historical arguments that the Muslim Rohingya had their own kingdoms before an expansion of Buddhists from the Irrawaddy valley in the 17th-18th centuries.

However, whatever they are called, Myanmar law recognises only the third generation of Bengali born to their parents who came to live in Myanmar before 1948. The rest, or those who failed to prove the connection with that generation, are regarded as illegal migrants.

Myanmar's concern for the migrant issue is based on security. Many lawmakers oppose the idea to amend the citizenship law as they fear a loose law might allow 'non-citizens' to enter the country easily. Some lawmakers even called on the legislative body to amend citizenship laws to provide for tougher punishment for illegal migrants.

Next month, President Thein Sein will receive a report from an investigation commission set up to probe violence in the Rakhine state.

The final report, which claims to be a comprehensive one to address the causes and reasons for the conflict, would be meaningless unless it mentions the real and deep roots that have been implanted in the mindset of the upper hierarchy of the country.

Why is Aquino doing the talking for Najib?

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 05:17 AM PST

Aquino warns Sulu sultan over M'sia stand-off
Starr: It looks as if Philippine President Benigno Aquino is more forthcoming on the Lahad Datu crisis than Malaysian PM Najib Razak. It's indeed mind-boggling why Najib should see it fit to keep silent throughout the incident. Of course, he does have a handful of scandals to deal with and the decision to call for a general election. Or like he said, he wanted to see his transformation programme bearing fruit before the elections. Indeed, he has been too busy to be bothered about the armed incursion in Sabah. After all, he doesn't see any immediate threat to national security unlike the presence of Senator Nick Xenaphon from Australia on our shores.
Onyourtoes: I don't know what game the Malaysian authorities are playing anymore. At first, they want to engage and negotiate to send the intruders back. When the Philippines government sent a warship and sought to take them back, suddenly our authority wants to throw the book at these terrorists.
Doc: It looks like Aquino is acting on our PM's behalf in calling for the self-proclaimed Sulu sultan to stand down.
ForTheNation: Our leaders are smarter than you think. See, they have the Philippine president doing all the hard work for them. Malaysia Boleh for sure.
Solaris: Here we are waiting for Najib to at least say something on the issue, but the Philippines is flashing its whip - in the interest of Malaysia.

Intruders snub Aquino's warning to leave Sabah
Headhunter: This is what happen when armed invaders and terrorists are treated as tourists. Imagine what would have happened had the group size been 10,000 strong. Sabah would have been declared as Philippines territory by now. Is our defence minister sleeping on the job?
Happily Writing: Our government tolerance on these invaders is amazing. Deadlines can be moved like shifting goal posts. This is a sign of weak government. This is a sign of a PM who does not care about people, especially Sabahans. He only cares about his own popularity. For him, real issues can wait.
Anonymous_4056: It is only right to return Sabah back to the Sulu sultanate if it can be proved that we only lease the land from them. After all, they are Malay and Muslim too.
Paul Warren: Who has a better claim to Sabah? The Indians, Filipinos, Indonesians and Bangladeshis who have been given citizenship or these Sulu people? I reckon, if we have been paying rental to them then they certainly would have a far better claim to Sabah than those who were favoured by former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Filipino intruders 'ready to defend' themselves
Ferdtan: The group of Filipino intruders have vowed to stay and defend themselves to the end. This is what happened when Malaysian authorities are seen to be weak and indecisive. Najib is still mum on the Sabah invaders. His personal interest in the coming general election is more important than ensuring our country internal security is safe. At least Aquino (who is showing more leadership than our PM) has warned the clan leader that he must end the stand-off. Now the engaging authority, our police force under the clueless Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, has passed the buck to the Foreign Ministry. We should have in the first place been tough - the Defence Ministry and the army should be called in to take charge, instead of the police. The situation is now getting rather hazardous. It may end up a bloody mess. Our government has clearly underestimated the resolve of these 'invaders'.
NoNoNo: This is 20th century, not 16th, not 17th and not 18th century. The Sulu sultan lost ownership of Sabah the day the British North Borneo Company took over the land. And the day Sabah opted to join Sarawak and Malaya to form Malaysia, it is owned by Malaysia. The sultan can blame his ancestors for being cheated by British North Borneo Company which no longer exist.
ACR: Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali is not commenting on this threat to national security? How about citizenship expert and know-it-all Mahathir? He was the brains behind Project M and also on ways of stripping a person of citizenship. Send him immediately to negotiate with the Sulus, with Ibrahim in tow.
Wanderer: This group of Filipino intruders must be fully aware that our security forces are brave enough to tackle unarmed anti-establishment protesters. Only 30 armed intruders and these "butt dancers" have no guts to move in.

MB Selangor Selar Bernama Selewengkan Fakta Isu Air

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 06:01 AM PST

Bernama Diminta Perbetul Fakta Isu Air Selangor

New York on my mind

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 02:55 AM PST

Here's a little secret. Nothing important, but it was just a fleeting aspect of my life. More than 10 years ago, I almost ended up with an opportunity to work in New York. This chance came at a time when my working life was at a major crossroad.

My employment at that time was in transition. The company was being swallowed by another in what was being touted as a "friendly merger" but as we all came to realise eventually, mergers are anything but friendly.

So there I was, being transferred from the Head Office of a bank in Penang to one of its branch offices in Kedah. I remained there for about a year before deciding that enough was enough with looking after other people's money.

So how did this opportunity arrive? Somehow, a friend hinted to me that there was a company that was looking for people who was willing to work in New York. Of course, my ears pricked up. Won't yours? All sorts of ideas popped out of my head. But soon later, reality set in. Did I really have to go work in a strange land when my family is comfortable here and it was not impossible to get another job? After some hard thinking, the decision was rather easy to make: no, this adventure would not be suitable for me. Despite the turmoil, I was still contented here. Penang was, is and will be my home.

So holidaying in New York, yes, but not to work there on a long term.

You know, when I was much younger, I used to imagine how it would be like to be even there for a holiday. All those vivid images of New York's attractions that had been playing in my mind, thanks of course to the countless movies which were set there, such as Saturday Night Fever, King Kong and many others. And memorable songs such as Frank Sinatra's New York, New York. That city is a place where excitement never ends.

I would presume that getting to New York would be easy enough although flying halfway around the world – and possibly changing flights as well – is a daunting thought and is not exactly something that I especially look forward to.

Then there are so many questions to ask. For example, after arriving there, where can you stay at a reasonable price? Where can you dine without blowing your budget? How would you get around New York when you are on holiday? What are the time-honoured tourist attractions for first-time visitors to this grand city? What is the best itinerary when time is at a premium. When is the best season to be there? Of course in this time and age, it only takes several clicks on a computer to find all the answers.

With information so very easy to obtain nowadays, perhaps one day I will still be able to find the opportunity to visit this remarkable city called New York. Provided, of course, I have a fairy godmother to take care of my expenses. Ha ha!

Investing in a RM90 rubber band

Posted: 24 Feb 2013 10:57 PM PST

The filmsy plastic envelope had been lying almost forgotten in my cupboard since I acquired it a few days before the Chinese New Year. I never got round to seeing it again until yesterday. I opened the door and it just fell off the shelf. Really! Funny, it must have been calling out to me all this while.

Oh well, might as well get down to it. What I am referring to is this: a drive belt upgrade for my Rega Planar 3 turntable. Ever since I bought the turntable secondhand about a decade ago, I never thought of changing anything except for the magnetic cartridge. But lately, I had been giving the turntable a serious look-over. It still gives a very good service but boy, I would greatly love a new tonearm. However, it will definitely set me back by at least RM1,500. This is out of the question, out of my consideration, even in the medium term.

The next best alternative was the turntable belt. The original that came with the turntable was a black thin rubber belt. It had been there for so long, enduring all the abuses to the turntable, that I feared that it could snap at any time. A call went out to a friend in KL who knew a chap selling these Rega accessories. Hey, I told him, next trip back to Penang, please bring back a new drive belt for my turntable. He duly obliged.

This new belt was white. I must say that the first time I handled it, I was curious to see how different it was from the old one. But apart from the colour, I couldn't exactly see any difference. Oh, maybe, the black one looked slightly stretched but I couldn't tell with just a visual inspection. However, Rega had claimed that the improvement was in the rubber which was not only undyed but was also smoother and stronger. Hence, the inference was, it imparted improved motor control and performance.

I slipped the new white rubber band onto the base, replaced the glass platter and the felt mat, slipped on a record and then switched it on.

My first surprise: unlike with the old belt, the turntable started quickly and came up to speed almost immediately. My second surprise: yes, the music did seem tighter and delivered a slightly fuller sound.

Of course, I wouldn't expect the improvements to be utterly drastic and subtle though they were, I must admit that it was a good decision to replace the turntable belt.

Am I still looking for a new tonearm? Erm...

Clashes Over Land Seizures Batter the Police in Myanmar

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 03:57 AM PST

SOURCE> Clashes Over Land Seizures Batter the Police in Myanmar By February 27, 2013

BANGKOK — When angry villagers clashed with security forces on Tuesday over land seizures in Myanmar, the police apparently got the worst of it.

Officials and a doctor at a hospital said on Wednesday that one officer had been killed and that dozens had been wounded; most of those whose injuries were severe were police officers.

The episode took place in Maubin, a township in the Irrawaddy River delta, when the police tried to disperse villagers who were protesting the taking of land by a private company. It was the second time in four months that a crackdown by the police related to land seizures turned violent. In November, dozens of monks were badly burned when police officers in riot gear used what a group of lawyers has said were white phosphorus incendiary devices, a weapon usually reserved for warfare.

Dr. Myint Soe, the head of the hospital in Maubin, said that of the 46 people who were treated there late Tuesday, 27 were officers. One was transferred to a larger hospital in Yangon and later died, the doctor said.

The issue of land seizures has dogged the administration of President Thein Sein, who took office in 2011 after five decades of military rule. A parliamentary committee investigating land seizures has been presented with evidence of numerous cases dating from before the transfer to civilian rule.

The protests in Maubin began last week, according to reports in the Myanmar news media, with several hundred farmers gathering at an agricultural project owned by a businessman, U Myint Sein. Farmers say that the land was confiscated in 1996 and then sold to Mr. Myint Sein, and that they were never compensated.

"We just want our land back," said Khin Mar Win, 32, a villager. "All we have is our land."

The protests continued on Wednesday. It was not clear what had touched them off now, 17 years after the seizures, though both police officers and villagers said that tensions over the project had been worsening in recent years.

"It is an old problem, but now it has exploded," said Lt. Col. Tot Shwe of the police.

Colonel Tot Shwe would not comment on exactly how the episode on Tuesday had escalated into violence, except to say that the police had fired rubber bullets, not more lethal ammunition.

But a video posted on Facebook by The Voice, a private weekly news journal, appeared to show the police bracing for a confrontation, with a commander instructing a line of officers in riot gear about how to use their batons.

"When you beat, strike from above, like this," the commander is heard to say. "Beat any parts you can reach."

He adds, perhaps presciently, "Keep in mind that they also have hands — so they will defend themselves."

Wai Moe contributed reporting from Maubin, Myanmar.

This article has been revised to reflect the following correction:

Correction: February 27, 2013

Because of an editing error, an earlier version of this article referred incorrectly to the amount of time that elapsed between land seizures in Myanmar and protests against those seizures. It was 17 years, not seven.

-mk

Pembaziran Melampau BN: Itulah Yang Bankrapkan Negara - Aziz Bari

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 01:14 AM PST

-selangorku

In Memory of Eugene Joseph Amato

Posted: 27 Feb 2013 10:47 PM PST

It was with much sadness when I saw in my Facebook News Feed that my former student Dr.Justine Bhar-Amato's father Eugene Joseph Amato, 80, of Wayne, N.J., passed away passed away on Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, surrounded by his loving family.

I wish to express my deeepest condolences to Justine and the Amato family. I am indeed saddened by the news because the late Mr. Amato has left a vacuum in this world and in our hearts that cannot be filled. He was such an inspiring man who spoke honestly from his heart and sincerely with his eyes. He inspired Justine and many who knew him including myself to be more than who we are and to chase our dreams to make them reality.

The first time I met him was during the first Parent-Teacher Consultation when Justine was in Year 10. Then, Justine was in my Economics class in Uplands International School. I remember how Mr Amato commended me for the high standard of work I expected from the class, the type of assignments and research projects they had to undertake even at the age of 15 and the way I motivated the kids. That was so validating!

At that time, Justine was just an ordinary student but what caught my attention was her insatiable desire to learn and to know more. Her cohort is one of the best I have ever taught in Uplands. I challenged them with so much homework and unbelievably, they complied and tried their best. Justine even wrote a 16 verse poem on Demand and Supply which I have kept till today. She went on to score straight As in her 'O' levels in Uplands and 'A' levels in UK and her medical degree at UCL. Currently, Dr. Justine Bhar-Amato is a clinical research associate at UCL and the Heart Hospital, UCLH Foundation Trust. She holds a clinical research training fellowship awarded by Heart Research UK. She is doing a PhD in Autonomic Modulation in Brugada Syndrome. You can read her papers here and HERE.

Justine's accomplishment is testimony of the wonderful parenting from her parents, both of whom I respect greatly. Her mother, Dato' Rhina Bhar, is another fantastic person who was there for me at a very critical experience of my life. Justine is not only big in brains but also in her heart, always reaching out to me via FB if she knew I was unwell or down. I am so blessed to have had the opportunity to teach Justine and to see her grow into a fine young doctor and to know both her parents.

Despite my few interactions with Mr. Amato - the last being at a celebration dinner at Mr. Bhar's home to celebrate the graduation of Shai and Natasha from law school, Dheeraj from medical school in 2005, I am not exaggerating when I say each left an indelible mark on me because of the observations, advice, wisdom and experience he shared so freely and humbly.

My son, Jonathan, was only 5 when he met Mr. Amato in 1994 at a dinner treat for my family in appreciation for teaching and guiding Justine. Jon remembers Mr. Amato clearly when I broke the sad news to him and even asked me if he had curly hair! That is the sort of legacy Mr. Amato has left behind. May his children and grandchildren continue to impart his ideals, principles and zest for life to those with whom they come into contact. May Eugene Joseph Amato rest in peace, always.

According to this site:

Family and friends are welcome for visitation hours on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Farmer Funeral Home, 45 Roseland Ave., Roseland, N.J. 07068. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home. Interment will be at Mr. Olivet Cemetery, Bloomfield, N.J. Condolences and memories can be shared at THIS LINK.

Eugene was born in Orange, N.J., and raised in Bloomfield, N.J. He graduated from Bloomfield High School and went on to receive his bachelor's degree from Fordham University, graduating in 1954. He also held a master's degree in business administration from San Francisco's Golden Gate University. He served in the U.S. Armed Services from 1954 to 1956, receiving a commendation from the U.S. Third Army for meritorious military service.

He then began a career as an engineer and later a senior executive in the early days of the technology industry in Silicon Valley, working for General Instrument, Fairchild Semiconductor, and National Semiconductor. During these years, he managed manufacturing facilities in a series of locations outside the U.S., including Taiwan, the Philippines, Mexico, Brazil, Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia.

Taking a leave of absence from National Semiconductor, he served from 1979 to 1980 under President Jimmy Carter as assistant to the secretary of transportation and as deputy administrator for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). During his tenure at NHTSA, he conceived of and published the government-sponsored Car Book, a consumer guide to purchasing automobiles, now in its 32nd year of publication.

After his career in the semiconductor industry, he served as chief executive officer for a number of start-up businesses, including San Francisco-based Grocery Express.

He was the beloved son of the late James Amato and Catherine (Cerami) Amato; devoted father of Eugene Amato and his wife, Carol; Joseph Amato and his wife, Lisa, and Justine Bhar-Amato; and cherished grandfather of Christopher, Alyse, Elizabeth and Joseph Jr. He was predeceased by his siblings.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, Grand Central Station, P.O. Box 4777, New York, N.Y. 10163-4777, or at THIS LINK.

U Thein Sein, please do not try to divert attention by creating another Anti-Muslim Riots.

Rosmah Mencecet Lari Balik Gara-gara Protes Siswi UKM

Posted: 27 Feb 2013 10:08 PM PST

-HD
