Skandal Seks Zahida-Shafie Muncul Kembali Sejak Pertelingakan Dalam Umno Sabah

Posted: 11 Feb 2013 09:02 AM PST

-Malaysia Chronicle

Working out when to exercise in the cold and flu season

Posted: 11 Feb 2013 06:07 AM PST

NEW YORK, Feb 11 — Sniffles, runny noses and flu-like symptoms can deter, delay and even derail many exercisers just when enthusiasm for that New Year's resolution is beginning to flag.

Health and fitness experts advise to starve a fever of exercise. But feeding a cold moderately, with a brisk walk, may not be a bad idea.

"The classic line from every sports medicine doctor is, 'If you can do it, do it. If you can't, don't,'" said Dr. Lewis G. Maharam, author of "Running Doc's Guide to Healthy Running."

Usually if symptoms are confined to above the neck, exercising is OK, he explained. But if you're running a fever of 101 degrees Fahrenheit (38.3 degrees Celsius) or higher, skip it

Body heat rises during exercise due to increased metabolism, explained Maharam, who practices medicine in New York City. If you start high, your body's way of cooling you down is out of balance.

"If fever gets too high, you break down proteins, maybe in the kidneys or liver," he said.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that more than 425 million case of colds and flu occur annually in the United States. The average person has about three respiratory infections per year.

Dr. David C. Nieman, a professor of health sciences at Appalachian State University, North Carolina Research Campus, said research shows that regular, moderate aerobic exercise strengthens the immune system, and that people who exercise report fewer colds than their inactive peers.

Nieman said five days or more of aerobic activity per week was found to be a powerful factor in lowering the number of sick days.

"Even three to four days was effective. To be avoided was being sedentary," he explained.

But when animals infected with a systemic virus are forced to exercise in fever and pain, studies show that their symptoms are exacerbated, prolonged, and sometimes life threatening.

'BED REST'

"It's very dangerous." said Nieman, who has written about the impact of exercise on the common cold. "If you have flu or virus with fever and pain, the best remedy is bed rest. The worst thing is to sweat it out with exercise."

He said common cold and flu viruses can stay on objects, such as door handles, treadmills and computer keyboards, for hours. The main route to infection is through touching one's mouth or nose with unwashed hands.

Patrick Strait, of Snap Fitness, a franchiser of gyms with locations worldwide, said this time of year fitness centres step up cleaning efforts because they see a lot more traffic and so many people catch colds and the flu.

"It's a public place where a lot of people are sweating," said Strait. "We tell manager/owners to clean once an hour, wash down the equipment with bleach, etc."

He urged clients to wipe down equipment and wash hands often.

"And if you're sick, don't come to the gym," he said.

Jessica Matthews, an exercise physiologist with the American Council on Exercise, said some day's symptoms dictate scaling back your workout or, if you're contagious, skipping the gym entirely.

"Always listen to your body," she said. "It might be a good idea to exercise at home or privately."

Nieman said that while moderate exercise strengthens the immune system, elite athletes will experience a rise in stress hormones and a dip in immunity after about 90 minutes of high-intensity activity.

Maharam said the immunity of marathoners is decreased for up to 72 hours after a race. During that time, the athletes are more susceptible to colds, flu, and, most commonly, the so-called "marathon sniffles."

He said symptoms usually subside within 48 hours.

"At the end of a race, when you're all sweaty and they're all sweaty, you don't need to be hugging and kissing people," Maharam said. "Your immune system isn't as strong as it was." — Reuters

Unruly lines between Myanmar and China

Posted: 11 Feb 2013 04:43 AM PST

Source: China's history in Myanmar: Unruly lines

THE border between Yunnan province and northern Myanmar (formerly Burma) has always been porous. To the people who live in the region, the border is a crooked mark on other people's maps, an arbitrary boundary snaking its way 2,400 kilometres through rugged and wild terrain. The authorities in Beijing have seen the same land as a lawless borderland, a place to be controlled.

In October 2012 the trial of a Burmese drug lord, Naw Kham, who was sentenced to death for the killing of 13 Chinese sailors on the Mekong river in northern Thailand, sharpened the sense in China that the Sino-Burmese border remains a breeding ground for criminal gangs and drug traffickers. The Chinese are also growing steadily more alarmed about the conflict between Myanmar's army and the Kachin Independence Army (known by the perhaps inauspicious initials "KIA") and the potential of its spilling over into China. Last month, the generals in Myanmar ordered a major offensive, deploying fighter jets and heavy artillery against KIA positions. Chinese authorities fear a humanitarian crisis on their territory, should the thousands of Karen and Kachin displaced from Kachin state and living in refugee camps in northern Yunnan be forced to seek safe haven farther from Myanmar, in southern Yunnan.

The people of this ecologically and ethnically diverse region have taken refuge on ether side of the border for centuries, according to various regional balances of power. For nearly as long they have frustrated attempts by both Burmese and Chinese governments to impose order. In "The Art of Not Being Governed", James C. Scott argues that "Zomia", a name he gives to the swath of highland communities that stretches from the edge of Tibet to Vietnam's central highlands, is the largest remaining region of the world not to have been fully incorporated into nation-states.

The Mongol invasions of the mid-13th century ended nearly 500 years' rule of an independent kingdom in what is today Yunnan. Dynasties subsequent to the Mongols' Yuan have all continued to claim Yunnan as a province—but administering it is another matter. Officials were often posted to the province as a form of punishment. They saw it as being a dangerous, disease-ridden backwater inhabited mostly by non-Chinese who stubbornly refused the officials' benevolent efforts to "civilise" them.

The Manchu conquest of China in the mid-17th century and the founding of the Qing dynasty marked the beginning of an especially turbulent era in Sino-Burmese relations. Throughout the Qing period, Yunnan, and especially the Sino-Burmese frontier, became a haven for anyone eager to avoid unnecessary involvement with the state. It was a Wild West on the Mekong. Illegal miners, smugglers, fugitives and would-be warlords lived side-by-side with local ethnic groups, corrupt Qing officials, and Burmese pirates. Conflicts were frequent and bloody.

The last claimant to the throne of the defeated Ming dynasty spent most of his reign on the run, with his court in tow. He finally fled into Burma seeking refuge. The Manchu army stormed across the border and demanded the Burmese king hand over his guest, to be executed, or else prepare to fight.

The Qing empire also fought a series of border wars against the Burmese in the middle of the 18th century. They launched four invasions into Burma in the span of just a few years, each venture proving more disastrous than the one before. The Qing commanders initially tried to hide the extent of their defeats. After each display of official incompetence the emperor grew more enraged until finally he unleashed the full fury of the elite Manchu bannermen against the Burmese king. So confident was the emperor in Manchu military prowess that even as his troops were mustering, he was already considering plans for how to incorporate a conquered and chastened Burma into the empire. Unfortunately for him, the Manchu troops were more adept at fighting their wars of conquest in the arid climate of Central Asia. Tropical heat and disease—especially dysentery—decimated their ranks in Burma. Hoping to spare his empire further humiliation, the emperor called it a draw. Two decades later, after trade and diplomatic relations had been restored between Burma and the empire, the emperor decided that, notwithstanding the evidence, the Qing had won the war after all.

Subsequent Chinese governments would gain a modicum of control over Yunnan. But even into the 20th century local leaders maintained a high level of autonomy, and the frontier continued to harbour its share of fugitives and rebels. In the aftermath of the Communist victory in 1949, thousands of troops nominally loyal to Chiang Kai-shek fled into Burma and Thailand. Many continued the fight, supported with arms and money from Taiwan and the United States. Others joined criminal gangs, supporting themselves through poppies and piracy.

Today, as the governments of Burma and China expand their reach into the isolated valleys and hillsides of the Sino-Burmese frontier, local communities are finding it increasingly difficult to maintain their autonomy. The Chinese government sees this as a triumph for nation-building and the rule of law. The local people however have a longer memory. Over the past millennium they have been conquered many times, but never allowed themselves to be truly governed. Why start now?

Barisan Nasional red faced in Penang

Posted: 11 Feb 2013 04:38 AM PST

Are you ready for Psy? Yessssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Are you ready for BN? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

If Prime Minister Najib Razak had heard the crowd at the back on the field, he would have been rather disappointed. In the midst of his speech at the Penang state BN Chinese New Year (CNY) open house held at the Han Chiang College field today, he said he did not want the day to be serious as everyone was expecting a great show by top Korean pop star Psy.

"Are you ready for Psy?" Najib asked about four times and the crowd responded loudly "Yes!".
He then asked "Are you ready for BN?" but the crowd at the back shouted "No" and laughed.

They also laughed when Najib mispronounced Han Chiang as "Han Niang", when he announced that the college will be upgraded to University College status. The crowd also laughed when the emcee invited Najib's wife Rosmah Mansor to sing a Chinese New Year song.

She was accompanied by several BN leaders including Tourism Minister Ng Yen Yen. Before his speech, Najib's son 'Jiping' gave a speech in Mandarin. Najib, who took over from him, started his speech with "Lu ho bo? Lu bo ho?" (Hokkien for "are you okay?"). He yelled 1Malaysia and asked the crowd to clap for former premier Abdullah Ahmad Badawi who was present.

He said he felt fortunate and happy that he managed to do what he never did before - to celebrate CNY with Penangites. "Thank you for giving me and my wife and family a raptorous and warm welcome to Penang. "I want you to feel we are here for you, to make Penang the Pearl of the Orient and give the best for Penang in the future."This is a government that cares for all Malaysians, fair and all inclusive and has real plans for the future," he emphasised. Najib said in the last four years, Malaysia had seen real change and progress and asked Penangites to give BN a chance to make the country better and truly developed by 2020.

"We want to listen to people and by coming here, I am listening to people. You want more affordable housing, I commit myself and BN to provide Penang with 20,000 affordable homes in next five years," he added. Najib also promised a monorail to resolve Penang's traffic and transport problems. He asked people to rely on this government, shouting "janji di tepati and insya Allah, we will deliver". Rakyat Berhak Curiga Jawapan BN Siapa Sebenarnya Bayar PSY

Posted: 11 Feb 2013 06:03 AM PST

Penganjur konsert masih membisu siapa taja Psy

Najib turut ditemani bekas perdana menteri Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, pemimpin BN negeri Teng Chang Yeow, Teng Hock Nan, serta menteri pelancongan Datuk Seri Ng Yen Yen.

Kalaw

Kalaw

Kalaw is a hill town in the Shan State of Burma. It is located in Kalaw Township in Taunggyi District. The town was popular with the British during colonial rule.

It is a famous hill retreat between Taunggyi and Tha-zi. Kalaw being situated at an altitude of 4600 feet gives cool and pleasant climate that passed through pine trees. People living near by are colourful Palaung tribe. A day trekking to Ta-yaw village, Paine-bin village and Yeaye Kan is a must during your stay.

About an hour's drive from Heho lies Kalaw, yet another British
hill station. Kalaw usually receives no more than overnight
transit stops from lake-bound travellers. Its pine forest, less
dense than it was three decades ago according to a long-term
resident, and well-maintained British-style country houses rival
those of Dalat the French hill resort in Vietnam.

Bicycles, horse-drawn carriages, bullock carts, a few beat-up
jeeps and four-sew cars ply the streets. A few military trucks
carry soldiers an take their children back to the barracks after
school.

Colonial houses dot the hills around Kalaw which used to have the
St Agnes' convent and Kingswood school during British rule.

Like elsewhere in Burma, Kalaw residents are deeply religious.
>From the Circular Road, the town's only road, visitors can see a
Roman Catholic church, a gleaming white Buddhist monastery and
mosque on ridge, Taunggyi was made the capital of Shan state by
the British.

Egyptian homeless children are also being raped

Posted: 11 Feb 2013 04:28 AM PST

From Egypt Independent:
I read the papers and online testimonials of group attacks on women in the streets. If I had not read the titles, I would have thought the authors had suddenly taken an interest in the daily lives of street children. I would have assumed they had become avid observers who had taken to the street to highlight this prevalence, and its normality in the street culture that very young children live every night.
But no. The titles indicate these testimonials are about younger and older "welaad naas" women of the middle class — because, remember, street kids are the excluded class. These articles are written because "citizens" have been struck, "citizens'" honor has been violated, and "citizens'" human rights have been wronged.
But street children? They aren't citizens — they don't even hold IDs. When they arrive, raped, shot or dead in front of the shelter doors, there hasn't been a crime because a citizen hasn't been involved. So, no, this flood of articles about harassment, sexual attacks and gang rape on the streets is not about street kids.
But this is the everyday reality for these children, and I have come to know these streets in the way that they have been recently discovered by others. So I thought that maybe by writing this, I could shed a different light — a look from a different angle — on a phenomenon that so many are horrified by and so unfamiliar with.

I am arguing here that this is just one of the ugly faces of the street, just as each human, each friend, has an ugly face, which you get to see, know and get scorned by once you have spent a long enough time with it. Its reality and its crudeness cannot hide forever. The euphoria of the imagined utopia of solidarity that the street brings during revolutionary times begins to crack, and the street and all its non-citizen inhabitants become a reality that you cannot escape.
Talking about scarring — a lot of attention and horror has been expressed following the attack in which a blade was used on one victim of these assaults. I wonder about the irony of the timing of this. Just last month, I took one of my street girls to a generous plastic surgeon who had offered my girls free reconstructive surgery for the scars they suffered during such attacks on the street.

The scarring is part of the street rape culture; any boy or girl who has been raped on the street will be "marked." This mark, usually a curve under the eye of the victim, will mean they are no longer virgins. Subsequent sexual attacks — and there will be many — will lead to smaller marks anywhere else on the body. One girl, who none of us at the shelter will ever forget, was lucky. She escaped the scarring on the face but needed 16 stitches on her lower back, where she was knifed as she escaped her rapists.
I am not an expert in conspiracy theories, but I am a consultant on street kids and the risks of the street. And so, when I read the musings that the National Democratic Party, the Muslim Brotherhood or someone else is organizing these mob sex attacks, my better judgment makes me tentative. I remember that no one paid the four men in their 30s and 40s to gang rape 7-year-old Maya who had been living in the street for just four days before that. The younger the child, the attackers think, the smaller the risk of contracting HIV.

Musa Hasan's deadly prediction

Posted: 11 Feb 2013 12:28 AM PST

OMG! Another 'Arab Spring' prediction, and this time it came from former IGP Musa Hasan, a man whom we once trusted in maintaining public order and security, an experienced police boss who should really understand what a country like Malaysia is made off and how it differs from Tunisia, Egypt, Syria and Yemen.

His prediction that the loser of the upcoming 13th general election would subscribe to the bloodiest Arab Spring riots and street demonstration is already causing uneasiness and worries to the public, especially voters.

Musa is throwing a deadly imagination that could spark panic among Malaysians, and those who buy his words would start to prepare for the worst - buying firearm illegally, hording food supply and be ready for 'come what may'.

This is extremely dangerous. The impact of his prediction could cause tense nationwide, especially after Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak dissolves the Parliament to pave the way for the national poll, expected between March and early June.

I don't know on which side of politics Musa is but I believe Malaysians have had enough of bloodshed, racial backlash and bad political rows. Majority of the Malays, Chinese, Indians and others do understand that Malaysian politics will not lead to civil war and confrontation of any sorts.

However, Musa looks so convinced that the Arab Spring will erupt in the country, putting leaders of Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Rakyat in the same boat as the heads of the warring factions in Syria, Yemen and Egypt.
The former IGP also lamented that the fight to curb violent coups has been hindered with the repeal of the Internal Security Act (ISA), a British-enacted law that allowed detention without trial. The Act was recently repealed and replaced with another security law, as a part of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's promise to widen civil liberties.
Previously, former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad claimed there was an opposition conspiracy to replicate the uprisings should PR fail to wrest Putrajaya.
He had alleged that Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had spoken openly about it in an interview with an Australian media recently.
Several leaders from the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition have also made similar allegations.
In retaliation, PR leaders said the accusations were intended to coerce voters against backing at the upcoming polls an opposition that was steadily growing in strength.
Yes, we cannot discount on the possibility that there would be some troubles after general election, especially when the opposition is all set and confidence of wresting Putrajaya from BN. It will be a 'do or die' game for Anwar Ibrahim's-led Pakatan Rakyat.

PR could pose a danger here, and not BN. As ambition precedes their emotion, they have more potential to become troublemakers on a small scale. Unless they choose to register a violence one, the police and the army will be ready for them.

I am also unsure what was Musa's motive when making the prediction but it didn't augur well in achieving racial assimilation and inter-religious understanding in the country. We have observe some teething problems to address the two most sensitive issues, and with such a prediction, I am afraid if some irresponsible politicians will use it as additive to their election campaign.

Musa didn't really face much problem during his tenancy as the police IGP, hence making him looks inferior than Ismail Omar who braced two Bersih rallies and a few other related demonstrations. And I guess Musa wanted some credits by coming up with his own prediction.

The rakyat will not allow anything to disrupt their peaceful life, the asset that has brought about prosperity and safety since Independence. Should any party embarks on such a dirty and filthy politics, I think the rakyat will be more ready than the police themselves in confronting them.

But still, Musa's prophecy is rather inciting one to happen!

Hadir sama, Timbalan Ketua Cabang, Bob Manolan.
