[GAMBAR & VIDEO] Sebahagian Jambatan Kedua Pulau Pinang Runtuh

Posted: 06 Jun 2013 09:22 AM PDT

-astro

Selesai Di Luar Mahkamah, Satu Kemenangan Untuk TG Nik Aziz

Posted: 06 Jun 2013 07:21 AM PDT

The sultanate of Sulu yesterday advised President Aquino to prepare a big detention cell for Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III, his family and supporters, saying they were prepared to face charges of inciting a war against Malaysia over Sabah and were willing to be jailed for it.

Wow! Brave enough.

I wonder if Malaysian hooligans are as such, ready to go behind bars en mass for inciting inter-racial hatred and trying to overthrow the legitimate government.
"Prepare a big jail cell for all of us. We will not run. We will not hide. It is up to the Filipino people to decide who really abandoned the claim on Sabah," said Abraham Idjirani, Sulu sultanate spokesman.
Idjirani, who earlier said the National Bureau of Investigation had conducted a credible probe on the occupation of Lahad Datu, Sabah, by the sultanate's security force, has slammed the NBI for "concocting" a report finding Kiram, his family, and their supporters of conspiring to incite a war with Malaysia.
"The report by the NBI is concocted. This is lutong Macau. They know that the only way of stopping the Sabah claim is to stop the Kiram family," said Idjirani.
Idjirani said that should warrants be issued for the arrest of the Kiram family members and their supporters, they would not resist.
He added that the sultanate is so cash-strapped now that it would not be able to post bail on the possible charges of inciting to war and violation of the election gun ban.
"These are bailable offenses but we do not have the money to post bail. Whether we will be arrested or not depends on the decision of the President," he said.
Kiram accused President Aquino of putting pressure on the Kiram family and their supporters just to appease Malaysia that brokered the peace agreement between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
Idjirani said he is not surprised with Aquino's failure to support the Sulu sultanate on the Sabah issue, adding the President is protecting his family's legacy of dropping the claim of the Philippines over Sabah.
I guess we also need a big prison complex, much bigger that the one in Sungai Buloh and Sungai Udang because more and more people are taking advantage of the government's goodwill to repeal the Internal Security Act (ISA).

We have seen the upward trend in such activities, especially on the Internet.

I also believe there is a need to separate political prisoners from the rapists, robbers, drug dwellers and other major criminals. Since Kamunting has lost that role, perhaps a better and a more 'conducive' detention center is what we need.

What do you think, Mr Home Minister?

Syria’s Religious War - The conflict between Sunnis and Shiites can’t be solved by U.S. intervention By Jonah Goldberg

Posted: 06 Jun 2013 04:18 AM PDT

If there was a moment when the United States could have productively intervened in Syria, it looks like that moment has passed. Shiite militants, including Hezbollah — partly at the behest of their paymasters in Iran — are racing to the defense of Bashar Assad's regime. According to a witness account in the New York Times, there were some 11,000 Hezbollah fighters in the besieged town of Qusayr alone. A Shiite religious student in Najaf, Iraq, told the Times that his colleagues believe the leader of Qatar, a backer of Sunni Syrian rebels, is a long-prophesied demonic figure who, it is foretold, will raise an army in Syria to wipe out Shiites in Iraq. As a result, devout Shiites are racing to defend their faith.

Sunnis around the world, meanwhile, are being called on to join the conflict, with the material support of Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The Sunni Muslim Scholars Association of Lebanon issued a fatwa calling on followers to support the rebels "by words, money, medical aid, and fighting." The hugely influential Sheikh Yusuf Qaradawi, a Sunni Egyptian cleric based in Qatar, called on Sunnis everywhere to come to Qusayr's aid and proclaimed Hezbollah "more infidel than Jews and Christians."

In the Middle East, them's fighting words. It's tempting to compare what is going on in Syria to the Spanish Civil War, a conflict that presaged World War II in many ways, chief among them the way fascists and Communists used the belligerents as proxies for the larger conflict brewing in Europe. The Assad regime, essentially a puppet of Shiite Iran, is a devil we know well. However much the rebellion began as a nonsectarian protest against Assad's corruption, it is now rapidly becoming dominated by al-Qaeda and other radical and terrorist forces. One such rebel group has reportedly been involved in the slaughter of Christians — not the kind of crowd many Americans have an interest in supporting.

But beyond the bad guys–versus–bad guys aspect, the Spanish Civil War analogy has its limits. A better comparison may be to the bloody upheavals that tore apart Europe in the wake of the Protestant Reformation. Christianity benefits from dogmas and doctrines more conducive to the separation of church and state than those found in Islam, starting with Jesus' injunction to render unto Caesar what is Caesar's. When the Roman Empire fell, the seat of political authority transferred to Constantinople, but the religious authority remained in Rome. This created room, conceptually at least, to distinguish political authority from religious authority. But the divine right of kings rendered that distinction operationally moot for centuries.

It wasn't until the bloody religious wars between Catholics and Protestants — as well as different denominations of Protestantism — had exhausted much of the continent that Europeans came to recognize "the essential futility of putting the beliefs of the mind to the judgment of the sword," in the words of historian C. V. Wedgwood.

In short, the tradition of religious tolerance we take for granted today was paid for with generations of bloodshed. Several centuries of war and religious persecution may not seem all that heartening a precedent. But things move much, much faster now. For instance, it took the West several millennia to learn how to lift its people out of poverty. The rest of the world leapfrogged countless intermediate steps by learning the West's lessons.

Between 1981 and 2001, for example, China alone lifted 680 million people out of poverty when it accepted the basic wisdom of markets. It came to that lesson only after it exhausted itself testing the barbaric limits of Communism, killing tens of millions of its own people trying to make an unworkable theory work. Edmund Burke was right when he said, "Example is the school of mankind, and they will learn at no other." What is happening in the Middle East is a horror. But some lessons can only be learned after exhausting the worse alternatives first.

There may yet be a role for America to minimize the horror. But a lasting solution can only be found when the people on the ground are ready and willing to take it to heart. National Review

‘Rule of Numbers’ Explains London Beheading By Raymond Ibrahim

Posted: 06 Jun 2013 04:01 AM PDT

Last week in London, two Muslim men shouting jihad's ancient war-cry, "Allahu Akbar" beheaded a British soldier with a cleaver—in a busy intersection and in broad daylight.  They boasted in front of passersby and asked to be videotaped. With blood still on his hands, and his decapitated victim still on the street, the jihadi still managed to go into "grievance" mode in front of the camera.

As surreal as this event may seem, Islamic beheadings are not uncommon in the West, including the U.S.  In 2011, a Pakistani-American who helped develop "Bridges TV"—a station "designed to counter negative stereotypes of Muslims"—beheaded his wife.  In Germany in 2012, another Muslim man beheaded his wife in front of their six children—again while hollering "Allahu Akbar."

Beheading non-Muslim "infidels" in the Islamic world is especially commonplace: in Yemen a "sorceress" was beheaded by the "Supporters of Sharia"; in Indonesia, three Christian girls on their way to school were beheaded; in Syria last Christmas, U.S.-supported rebels beheaded a Christian man and fed his body to the dogs; in Africa—Somalia, Tanzania, Mali—Christians are regularly decapitated.  (For a comprehensive picture of Christian suffering under Islam, see my new book, Crucified Again: Exposing Islam's New War on Christians.) Turkey: Erdoğan Threatens Vigilante Justice as Protests Spread to 80 Cities and Towns

Posted: 06 Jun 2013 03:58 AM PDT

(Commentary Magazine) Anger continues to rise in Turkey, where protests now rock more than 80 Turkish towns and cities. Like Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh before him, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan appears defiant in the face of the protestors' demands. At its core, Erdoğan and his supporters justify their actions in the fact that he won 50 percent of the vote in the last elections. In his mind, therefore, he has a popular mandate for anything he does—from meddling in an essentially local matter like the paving over of Gezi Park, to imprisoning opposition parliamentarians, to confiscating newspapers and television stations.

Alas, while fellow analysts like the Council on Foreign Relations' Steven Cook argue that Erdoğan is likely to survive the protests (and I largely agree with him), Erdoğan's own statements suggest the worst may yet be to come. While Erdoğan has pushed less volatile AKP members like President Abdullah Gül and Erdoğan's radical but more polite deputy Bülent Arınç in front of the cameras in recent days, their attempts to mollify the demonstrators have been overshadowed by Erdoğan's barely concealed threat that he was "barely holding back the 50 percent" that voted for him from coming onto the street to take on the pro-democracy protestors.

Indeed, it appears that some AKP members are already taking to the streets to confront violently those protestors who seek a more liberal and/or secular Turkey. After videos emerged in Izmir of police grabbing and handing protestors to others dressed in civilian clothes that would proceed to beat them, the governor of Izmir explained that the videotaped civilians were actually undercover police, but they had simply forgotten to bring their "police" vests which they are supposed to wear in such cases. Such an explanation does not seem credible, however, since those beating the demonstrators were not using batons, but crude wooden sticks, and many of them wielding the sticks and pipes against the protestors seemed to be no more than 16 or 17 years old. One of the so-called undercover police was further identified as a member of an AKP youth wing who had recently been ousted after tweeting, "One day we will bring down Ataturk's Tomb, inshallah."

Two years ago Cengiz Çandar, a pro-AKP journalist known to carry water for Erdoğan, criticized me harshly for referring to "Erdoğan's Brownshirts," and declared, "Freedom of speech is part of the daily routine in Turkey. Western attacks on the Turkish government smack of a dubious agenda." Mr. Çandar, if you doubt Erdoğan's Brownshirts exist, perhaps it's time to hop out of the government car and turn on the television. In any dictatorship, there are—unfortunately—no shortage of journalists who will protect rulers who in turn privilege them.

Fortunately, such journalists often keep one finger to the wind to make sure they can ingratiate themselves. Çandar today is comparing the Taksim protestors to a "velvet revolution." Let us hope that as the edifice of fear crumbles, other journalists will also prioritize truth over privilege. Not only will the Turkish people be better off, but so too will be the state of Turkish journalism. Ht tip: Eye On The World

Mengapa Zahid Hamidi Tidak Dikenakan Tindakan Jenayah?

Posted: 06 Jun 2013 05:32 AM PDT

- Bernama

Malaysia’s Sovereignty Sacrificed for Free Trade?

Posted: 05 Jun 2013 10:19 PM PDT

PRESS STATEMENT
6 June 2013
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Malaysia's Sovereignty Sacrificed for Free Trade?

The Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) is a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) initiative involving 11 countries and is currently in its 17th round of closed-door negotiations. Malaysia joined the TPP discussions in October 2010. Unfortunately, in keeping with past traditions, Malaysians including their elected representatives have not been informed of the discussions pertaining to the TPP.

This unfortunate exclusion from discussions, debates or any other form of participation let alone the entire process of obtaining a Parliamentary ratification denies the public their right to oversight and scrutiny of international treaties and agreements – be they bilateral or multilateral – which could affect national interests and sovereignty.

Although the Government is allowed to enter into international agreements and treaties without having to obtain Parliamentary approval, the scale and size of the TPP supercedes any other treaties in the world. Consistent with President Barack Obama's goal to make it the 'trade treaty' worthy of the 21st century, TPP far exceeds the authority and quality of the multilateral agreements already agreed at World Trade Organization (WTO). This in itself should have been a red flag for further caution.

Invariably, we are extremely worried that the Government will sign the TPP agreement without first seeking public opinion, or being attentive to the concerns and sentiments of the people of Malaysia.

While KEADILAN in principle supports FTAs if all stakeholders are involved in the process, alongside Parliamentary review and ratification, all FTAs nevertheless must be premised on "fair trade" principles without compromising the socio-economic sphere, environment, cultural domain, labour rights, public safety and national security. On that premise, we call for a parliamentary expert study group on TPP – formed of Malaysian experts and specialists drawn from around the world – to be immediately convened to look into the nuts and bolts of the FTA.

We have justifiable reasons to be concerned. This is because by joining this trade agreement:-

- TPP confers greater legal rights on foreign businesses than those available to domestic businesses through a clause called the "investor-state" dispute settlement (ISDS) resolution. In lieu of this, we question the motives of the Government for entertaining the notion of joining an agreement that empowers foreign corporations to challenge domestic laws and regulations outside of domestic courts without first exhausting local legal measures. This is especially frightening as it allows foreign corporations to circumvent laws and regulations enacted by our Government in public interest such as those pertaining to natural resource, environmental protection, and health policies.

- TPP contains provisions concerning infringements of Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) ranging from basic pharmaceuticals to digital information online. These provisions would result in the increased costs of medicines purchased by our Government, and for the private consumer of medicines. Further, some provisions would hinder privacy, expression and innovation on the Internet as Internet Service Providers (ISPs) would be required to monitor the everyday activity of internet users, and are given the authority to act upon them by means of disabling net access or throttling bandwidth, effectively hindering freedom of speech.

Accordingly, even if we accept TPP, we demand that the Malaysian Government ensure certain safeguards to be in place:-

1) Strengthen our environmental laws to that of international standards to prevent any abuse of our diverse ecosystem.
2) Emulate the international best practices to strongly oppose ISDS, and incorporate these best practices in the Trade Policy Statements.
3) Enact laws to protect the interest of domestic internet users and maintaining freedom of information as long as it does not breach existing security laws.

A study has been made by the Peterson Institute, stating that Malaysia stands to gain huge income gains through TPP. However, the projection has made no attempts to determine the impact of this trade deal on income inequality or environmental sustainability. Hence, we see TPP, and especially the processes leading to its ultimate acession, to be fraught with various social, political and economic risks, which could undermine the very integrity of the agreement eventually.

I will move a motion within Parliament strongly demanding a Parliamentary Expert Group on TPP be convened, with the added caveat that the legislature should be duly informed. This is to ensure the protection of the democratic rights of the Malaysian Parliament, especially in relation to the issue of review and ratification of all treaties.

Indeed, subsequent legislative amendments must be restored in light of this upcoming new treaty of TPP. Our concerns are not trivial. We will not accept the blind faith assurances that the Malaysian Government would perform its duties when they have failed miserably to protect our national interest and sovereignty in the past; including instances such as the territorial dispute cases of Pulau Batu Putih (with Singapore) and Block L and M (with Brunei), the Water Agreement (with Singapore) and the Singapore Tanjong Pagar KTM land deal (with Singapore).

I will further prioritise engagement with representatives from the Chinese, Malay, Indian and Chamber's of Commerce regarding this matter. We take kindly to the invitation of the US Embassy which stated that they have offered give numerous groups from both business and civil society here in Malaysia the opportunity to be a stakeholder in the negotiations. I fully intend to represent the interests of Malaysians during the upcoming round of negotiations that will be held in Malaysia and will be bringing with me representatives from the respective CCM's to be stakeholders as well.

This TPP may have been in the spirit of 'Free Trade', but is it truly a 'fair trade' deal for the citizens of our country?

Helloooo? Anyone Here?

Posted: 05 Jun 2013 09:49 PM PDT

Gosh, it's been ages since I last wrote anything in this blog. I've basically been neglecting all my other blog save for my Happy Feet running blog which sees the most updates. The days just seem to not have enough time for me to want to be able to do everything I desire.

Work is the number one culprit taking up most my time. Things are not actually really going that smooth in the office. Staffing issues gives me the brunt of my stress level contribution. Urgent timelines come a close second. Thank god for running which is one sure fire way of getting rid of some of the stress. Of course buying new running gear is another way ... LOL!

Gone are the days when I could sit here, write for hours and come up with a post every other day. Those of you who know me from way back, know how long and winding a post I could write. I could go on and on and on and still have more to write. I could write about anything without even thinking about it. But sadly these days, just thinking of writing the words 'good morning' could take hours.

Don't get me wrong, I've got loads of things to write, complain and bitch about but finding the time to sit and put them all down to words is something I don't have. And when I do have the time, I tend to drift towards my passion for running. I'm sure that would probably bore the hell out of most people.

I haven't visited any of the blogs of my old blog buddies in years. I do read the feed in my Google reader but once that's taken offline soon, it'll be even harder to keep updated with their blogs. I guess the days of blogging isn't what it used to be. The in-thing these days seem to be Facebook and Twitter. Heck, it's so much easier to keep updated of what's going on.

I guess the fire to write is no longer there unless of course the subject I'm writing about intrigues me considerably which currently is my running. Now, that subject I could go on and on for hours. Running has changed me a lot, mentally as well as physically.

There are times when I get 'too passionate' about running that I tend to neglect things and people. Thank god, I have the wife, who is equally passionate about running but is more level headed than I am, to remind me of things and keep my feet firmly rooted to the ground.

You see, I can't go a paragraph without mentioning something about running. I simply have no hope! And since I have no hope, I'm just going to keep on talking about running ... LOL! With just three weeks or so to go before the Standard Chartered KL Marathon, I'm already getting the jitters about the race. I know I shouldn't be. After all, this is not my first marathon. I've done two prior to this and countless other long distance races yet I still feel intimidated by it.

Yes, a marathon is intimidating, painful, tiring and practically a tough thing to do. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. It's not fun. It's not cool. It's not pretty. It's plain suffering all the way. When you cross that finish line, if you cross that finish line, your legs feel like someone whacked on them with industrial rubber hoses. But the training one puts in makes it a little and I really mean a little, bearable to undertake.

There was a time when I was still a marathon noob (actually I still am), when I thought I could take on the world, I used to think it would be fun running a marathon. I mean, how hard could it be? 42km can't be that far right? Well, to give you an idea of the vastness of the distance, if you're familiar with the USJ area, it's like running from USJ12 right along the Elite highway right up to the entrance of the Sepang International circuit. That's how far 42kms approximately is!

No, running a marathon isn't easy. It's hell but I still love attempting it. The feeling of self accomplishment one gets when you cross that finish is something I can never really put into words. You have to run one yourself to know what it feels like. You have to see the many emotional faces at the finish line to get a feel of what it's like. Words simply cannot describe it.

But don't let me frighten you into never attempting a marathon, just in case you're toying with the idea of signing up for one :D While, it's tough, crazy, painful and simply an insane thing to do. It's really doable if you train for it. With the right training, proper mindset and realistic goals, running and finishing a marathon is easily achievable. Keep your goals low and slowly started aiming higher and higher as you progress with each marathon. The saying, 'you get better with experience' is simply very true. Of course, keeping injury free is a big bonus!

Anton Krupicka. What I envision myself to be  ... hahahaha! In my dreams!
Pic credit goes to whoever owns the image.
In three weeks time I'll know if all that sacrifices I made and all the training I've put in will come to fruition during the Standard Chartered marathon. After that I can take a short break before embarking on trying to tackle the even more insane trail and ultra-running disciplines. That's something I'll keep to write about another time cos I can see all 3 of you nodding of to sleep already ... LOL!

Have a nice Thursday, folks.
